Personal Loan for 550 CIBIL Score: Lenders, Rates & Odds
At a CIBIL score 550–600 — the bureau's "poor to fair" band — banks are unlikely without a salary relationship and NBFCs are realistic with documented income. Unsecured pricing runs 22%–34% for tickets of ₹25,000 – ₹2 lakh. Secured routes stay open at any score and cost a fraction as much. Below: who lends, what it costs, and how to move the number.

Can I get a personal loan with a CIBIL score 550–600?
At 550 the file has usually stopped deteriorating and started recovering. Lenders read this band as a borrower with a real past problem who is now servicing obligations — which is a meaningfully different proposition from the 500s, and it shows up in the number of doors that open. Several NBFCs actively lend here, and approval becomes a question of income strength and recent conduct rather than an automatic decline.
The price of the recovery is still high. Expect 22% to 34% annualized on unsecured borrowing, with tickets typically between ₹25,000 and ₹2 lakh. That pricing is not arbitrary — at this band, default rates genuinely run higher, and the rate carries that. But it does make the arithmetic worth checking before borrowing: ₹1 lakh at 28% over two years repays about ₹1.32 lakh, and whether the need justifies ₹32,000 of interest is a question worth answering honestly.
Who lends at a CIBIL score 550–600?
The market is a ladder rather than a wall — each tier applies a different cut-off, and the bottom two do not look at your score at all.
| Lender type | Odds at 550–600 | Rate | Ticket | What decides it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Public & private banks | Unlikely without a salary relationship | 10.5%–18% | Up to ₹40 lakh | Cut-offs usually 700+; own salary bank is the exception |
| NBFCs & digital lenders | Realistic with documented income | 22%–34% | ₹25,000 – ₹2 lakh | Weighs income alongside the score |
| Gold loan | Open to everyone | 9%–24% | ₹25,000–₹50 lakh | No CIBIL check at all — the metal is the underwriting |
| Loan against FD | Open to everyone | FD rate + 1–2% | 85–95% of deposit | No score check; deposit keeps earning |
| Co-applicant loan | Depends on their file | 11%–20% | Set by their income | Priced on their score, not yours |
What does a low CIBIL score actually cost?
The clearest way to see the cost is to price the same loan twice. Take ₹2 lakh over 36 months. At a prime score you would be quoted around 12%, giving an EMI of ₹6,643. At 550–600, the indicative rate is 28% — an EMI of ₹8,273. Across the loan that gap is ₹58,680, paid for nothing except the three digits on your report.
Read that figure as a budget rather than a penalty. If six months of repair work would move you into a better band, the question becomes whether the borrowing can wait six months to save ₹58,680 — and where it can, waiting is among the best-paid decisions available. Where it genuinely cannot, the secured routes below deliver prime-like pricing today without any score at all.
Cheaper routes that skip the score entirely
The most useful move at 550 is to try your own bank before any app. If your salary lands in an account you have held for years, that bank can see your income directly and sometimes extends small pre-approved offers on relationship data rather than score alone. It costs one check in the app and, where it works, prices several points below anything an NBFC will quote.
Failing that, an NBFC with documented income is the mainstream route, and the strength of your bank statement does most of the work. A borrower at 550 with a stable salary, low obligations and no recent inquiries is a considerably better file than one at 590 with three live EMIs — the score sets the tier, but the statement sets the terms within it. And the secured comparison still applies: a gold loan at 9–24% beats every unsecured quote in this band, without a score check.
What is the minimum CIBIL score for a personal loan?
Nobody legislates a minimum; lenders set their own and publish them. Banks typically draw the line at 700 or 750 for unsecured personal loans. NBFCs start around 600–650. A few digital lenders will look at the 550s with strong income behind them. Under about 550, secured credit stops being the fallback and becomes the main answer.
The number is only half the story. Cut-offs are applied by system rather than judgment, so applying above your tier produces a rejection and a hard inquiry rather than a smaller counter-offer. The exception worth knowing is the bank that already holds your salary account, which prices on behaviour it can see rather than on the bureau figure alone.
How to improve your approval chances
From 550, the 700 threshold is roughly a year away for most borrowers, and the path is unglamorous. Every EMI paid on time adds; every card kept under 30% utilization adds; every month without a new application adds. What moves the needle fastest beyond that is credit mix — a file with only one type of borrowing scores lower than one showing a card and a loan both handled well, so a small secured card alongside an existing EMI is worth more than either alone.
One thing to avoid specifically at this score: the temptation to take a small expensive loan simply to "build history". It does build history, but at 30%+ it also builds cost, and a missed payment on it undoes a year of progress. If the aim is purely score repair rather than funds, a secured credit card does the same job with no interest at all, because you clear it in full each month.
- Pull all four bureau reports first. Checking your own is a soft inquiry and never affects the score. Reporting errors are common at low scores and free to dispute.
- Regularise current arrears before anything else. A live overdue account keeps pulling the number down every month it stays open, and most auto-decline rules trip on it directly.
- Utilization is the fastest lever you control. Below 30% of your combined limits, scores commonly recover 20–40 points inside two months — and a limit increase achieves the same ratio without repaying anything.
- A secured card is the standard repair tool. Place a small deposit, receive a card against it, clear it in full monthly — history builds, the deposit keeps earning, and nothing can be declined.
- Pause applications for 90 days before the one that matters. Inquiries accumulate visibly, and a quiet file reads better than a busy one at every score.
- Age is an asset on a credit file. Closing a long-held card shortens your history and shrinks the limit your utilization is measured against — two losses for one act of housekeeping.
- Match the lender to your band. Applying above your tier produces rejections and inquiries; applying below it costs you rate.
- Make your income legible. Route earnings through one account and keep it clean — where the score is weak, the bank statement carries the argument.
"Guaranteed approval, any CIBIL" — what to avoid
Low-score searches are among the most heavily targeted by advance-fee fraud and illegal lending apps, for the obvious reason that the people making them have fewest alternatives.
Walk away on either of these. A guarantee of approval "whatever your CIBIL" cannot be given honestly, because every regulated lender must assess whether you can repay before it commits. And an advance payment to release a sanctioned loan is the oldest fraud in the category — real charges are deducted at disbursal, never collected up front by transfer.
Three checks settle an app before you install it: it must name an RBI-registered bank or NBFC as the lender; it must never ask for contacts or photo-gallery permissions; and the money that arrives must match the sanction, with no pre-deduction. If you have already been caught, report on the RBI's Sachet portal and to the cyber-crime helpline 1930 — and note that a debt to an unregistered lender carries no credit-bureau consequence, which is precisely why such operators rely on threats. Our grievance and escalation guide lists every reporting channel.
One more, specific to low scores: "credit repair" services promising to delete accurate negative entries for a fee. Genuine errors can be disputed free with the bureaus in 30–45 days; accurate records cannot be removed by anyone, at any price.
