Gold loan interest rates: what PSU banks, private banks and NBFCs actually charge

The same bangles pledged at three different counters on the same morning will be priced anywhere from 8.65% to 27%. That is not a rounding difference. It is the single largest controllable cost in gold borrowing, and it has almost nothing to do with your gold and almost everything to do with which door you walk through.

Across the 18 lenders tracked above, the pattern is consistent. PSU banks (6 of them here) start at 8.65% and top out near 9.9%. Private banks (8) start close behind at 8.99% but their ceilings run much higher, because the same bank sells a cheap agricultural or bullet scheme and an expensive convenience one. Gold-loan NBFCs and diversified NBFCs (4) start around 9.5% and reach 27%.

Why the spread is so wide

Three things explain almost all of it. The first is the cost of money: a PSU bank funds its book with retail deposits paying 6–7%, while an NBFC borrows wholesale at materially more, and that gap is passed straight through. The second is what the lender is selling. A bank is selling credit; an NBFC is selling speed — a branch that appraises, sanctions and pays out in under half an hour, on a Sunday, in a town with no bank branch. The third is collection economics: NBFCs lend smaller tickets to borrowers banks will not underwrite, so their loss and servicing costs per rupee are higher.

None of that makes the NBFC premium unfair. It makes it a purchase — you are buying hours, and sometimes hours are worth it. What is irrational is paying the premium by accident, because nobody told you the PSU counter two streets away would have done the same loan for a third less.

What the difference costs in rupees

Interest on a gold loan is usually quoted per month, which flatters it. Convert before you decide. On a ₹1 lakh pledge, a 8.65% loan costs about ₹721 a month in interest; at 18% it is ₹1,500; at 24% it is ₹2,000. Over a twelve-month tenure that is a difference of roughly ₹15,348 per lakh borrowed — on identical collateral, for an identical purpose, with identical risk to the lender, since the gold is sitting in a vault either way.

Scale that to a typical wedding-set pledge of ₹5 lakh and the gap over a year is about ₹76,740. That is the number worth spending an afternoon on.

Three traps in the quoted rate

  • The rate is a slab, not a number. Most lenders price by scheme, by LTV band and by repayment mode simultaneously. The advertised floor usually belongs to the lowest-LTV, interest-serviced variant. Ask which slab your loan lands in, in writing.
  • Teaser pricing that resets. A handful of schemes quote a low rate for an introductory period and step up sharply afterwards. Ask for the rate after the promotional window and the exact date it changes.
  • The rate is not the cost. Valuation fees, processing, stamp duty and renewal charges at rollover all sit outside it. The Key Fact Statement must show them before you accept — read that document, not the poster.

Per-lender rate slabs, including which scheme carries which band, are on each lender's rates page linked in the tables above, and the daily reference sits on our gold loan rate today tracker.

How much gold loan can I get per gram?

Two different numbers get called "per gram", and confusing them is the most common reason a borrower walks out of a branch disappointed. The first is what a gram is worth. The second is what a gram will lend — always lower, because the RBI caps how much of the metal's value any lender may advance.

At today's reference of ₹14,943 per gram of 24K (updated 2026-10-10), those two numbers look like this by purity:

Purity Value per gram Loan per gram at 75% LTV Typical jewellery
24K ₹14,943 ₹11,207 Coins and bars
22Kmost jewellery ₹13,688 ₹10,266 Bangles, chains, most Indian ornaments
20K ₹12,448 ₹9,336 Lighter ornaments, some regional work
18K ₹11,207 ₹8,405 Studded and designer pieces

The two weights where your LTV steps down

There is no single loan-to-value cap. Under the RBI's framework for consumption gold loans the ceiling is tiered by ticket size: up to 85% on loans of ₹2.5 lakh or less, 80% up to ₹5 lakh, and 75% above that. Crucially a tier only applies if the loan it produces stays inside that tier's own ceiling — so the tier is decided by the size of the loan, not chosen by you.

Translated into jewellery at today's price, that gives two step-down points. Pledge up to about 21 grams of 22K and the 85% tier is reachable. Between roughly 21 and 45 grams you fall to 80%. Past about 45 grams the 75% cap binds.

The practical consequence is counter-intuitive: pledging more gold can lower the proportion you are advanced. A household needing somewhere near ₹2.5 lakh is usually better off carrying just enough jewellery to stay inside the 85% tier than emptying the locker — and for larger needs, two smaller pledges can beat one large one, provided the second lender's pricing holds up and you can service both.

What common pledge weights actually raise

The ladder below runs today's 22K figure across the weights people usually bring in. The right-hand column names the tier that actually applies at that weight.

Gold pledged (22K) Appraised value LTV tier that applies Maximum loan
1 gram ₹13,688 85% — small-ticket tier ₹11,635
10 grams ₹1,36,880 85% — small-ticket tier ₹1,16,348
20 grams ₹2,73,760 85% — small-ticket tier ₹2,32,696
50 grams ₹6,84,400 75% — standard cap ₹5,13,300
100 grams ₹13,68,800 75% — standard cap ₹10,26,600

Why your branch figure will be lower than this table

Every number above assumes pure gold weight at the reference price. Three deductions stand between it and your sanction letter, and none of them is negotiable:

  • Stones, enamel and beads weigh nothing to a lender. A kundan or temple-work piece can lose 20–40% of its gross weight the moment the appraiser separates metal from decoration. Plain bangles and chains lose almost nothing, which is why they are the most efficient thing to pledge.
  • Appraised purity governs, not the receipt. A hallmarked 916 piece will test at 22K. Older or unhallmarked work regularly appraises a karat or two lower, and that judgement — made at the counter, in front of you — resets the whole calculation.
  • The reference price is not your lender's price. Most lenders use an internal rate, often a 30-day average rather than the spot rate, precisely so that a one-day spike does not inflate advances. In a rising market this makes your figure slightly conservative; in a falling one, slightly generous.

Per-lender per-gram figures, including how each one treats purity and stones, are on the per-gram pages linked from the tables above. The daily reference is on our gold rate today page, with city-wise variation.

Gold loan calculator: the per-gram arithmetic, done by hand

A gold loan calculator is doing three multiplications. Knowing them means you can sanity-check any figure a branch quotes you, on the spot, on a phone:

  1. Net gold weight × purity factor — 0.916 for 22K, 0.833 for 20K, 0.75 for 18K — gives pure gold weight.
  2. × today's 24K rate per gram gives appraised value.
  3. × the LTV tier your loan size falls into — 85% up to ₹2.5 lakh, 80% up to ₹5 lakh, 75% above — gives the maximum advance.

Worked through: 30 grams of 22K jewellery with 2 grams of stones. Net metal is 28 grams. 28 × 0.916 = 25.6 grams of pure gold. At ₹14,943 per gram that is about ₹3,83,258 of appraised value. At 75% the advance is roughly ₹2,87,444. Because that exceeds ₹2.5 lakh the 85% tier is out of reach, and at 80% the loan would still clear ₹2.5 lakh but stay under ₹5 lakh — so 80% is the tier that applies, giving about ₹3,06,606.

Then the cost side, which most calculators bury. At 8.65% the monthly interest on each lakh is about ₹721; at 12% it is ₹1,000; at 18%, ₹1,500. Multiply by your loan in lakhs and by the months you actually intend to hold it. A gold loan held for three months and one held for three years are completely different products wearing the same name.

The structure matters as much as the rate. A bullet loan charges interest monthly and returns the entire principal at closure — cheapest in total interest if you genuinely repay early, punishing if you roll it over repeatedly. An EMI structure amortises principal from month one, costs a little more in discipline and a little less in risk. An overdraft charges only on what you draw, which suits a working-capital need rather than a one-time expense.

Run your own numbers in the gold loan EMI calculator, size a pledge in the loan amount calculator, or check the auction threshold in the auction risk calculator.

Gold loan eligibility per gram: what actually decides your figure

Gold loan eligibility is unusual in Indian lending because it is not really about you. There is no income test, no employer category, no credit score gate. The pledge is the underwriting. That is precisely why gold lending serves households that every other product turns away — the self-employed with irregular receipts, the first-time borrower with no file, the borrower whose score was damaged years ago.

What the lender does check:

  • Purity floor. Most lenders accept 18K and above. Below that the piece is usually refused outright rather than discounted, so a 14K import or a heavily alloyed older piece may not be pledgeable anywhere.
  • Ornaments, not bullion. Jewellery is standard. Gold coins are accepted by many lenders but typically capped — commonly at 50 grams per borrower, and only bank-issued coins. Bars are widely refused. Silver is a different product entirely.
  • Ownership. You must own what you pledge. Third-party gold, even a close relative's, requires that relative to be a co-borrower or to pledge it themselves. Lenders ask, and a false answer is the one thing that can turn a gold loan into a criminal matter.
  • KYC and age. PAN and Aadhaar, and typically 18 to 70–75 years. That is the whole file.

The minimum-grams question

Eligibility has a floor at the bottom too, and it is set by the lender's minimum loan size rather than by any rule about weight. Across the lenders tracked here those minimums run from ₹1,000 at the NBFC end to ₹50,000 at some bank counters. Converted at today's 22K advance of ₹10,266 per gram, that means a ₹1,000 minimum needs well under a gram, while a ₹50,000 minimum needs roughly 5 grams. If you have one small chain and a modest need, an NBFC or a gold-belt private bank will transact where a large bank will simply decline the ticket as too small to process.

What eligibility does not protect you from

Being approved is not the same as being safe. Because the loan is secured on an appreciating asset, borrowers routinely take more than they need and roll it over, and the interest quietly compounds against jewellery that was never meant to be working capital. Two disciplines are worth more than any rate comparison: borrow for a defined purpose with a defined repayment date, and know the price at which your lender would issue a margin call if gold falls. Our auction risk calculator shows that threshold for your own pledge.

If your need is longer-term or your gold is limited, compare against an unsecured option before pledging — the personal loan guides run the same arithmetic without the collateral, and for borrowers with a weak credit file our low CIBIL score guides set out what each band can realistically access.

Gold loans — the questions that matter

Which lender gives the best gold loan?
Depends what "best" means for you: PSU banks (SBI, PNB, Union) own the lowest rates but take hours; gold-belt private banks (Federal, SIB, CSB) blend near-PSU pricing with practiced speed; NBFCs (Muthoot, Manappuram) convert gold to cash in 20 minutes at a real premium. Our per-lender guides call each trade honestly.
How much loan do I get per gram of gold?
On today's indicative reference (updated 2026-10-10), 22k jewellery supports up to about ₹10,266/gram at RBI's 75% LTV cap — with small loans (≤₹2.5 lakh) allowed up to 85% under the 2026 rules. Appraised purity and stone deductions set your actual figure.
Do gold loans need income proof or a credit score?
No and no — the pledge is the underwriting: KYC, ownership and appraised gold are the whole file, which is why gold loans serve borrowers every other product rejects. The loan IS bureau-reported though; repay it well and it quietly builds the credit history you lacked.
Is my gold safe with a lender — and what if I default?
Regulated lenders hold pledges in insured, dual-custody sealed packets, and default triggers a protected sequence: notices, cure window, publicly announced auction with reserve price, surplus refunded to you. Your practical safeguards: photograph ornaments, verify the itemized receipt, check seals at release.
What charges apply on gold loans beyond interest?
Appraisal/valuation fees, modest processing, stamp duty, and renewal charges at rollover — all disclosed on the mandatory Key Fact Statement before you accept. The absolute rule: no fee is ever collected before disbursal; an advance-fee demand is fraud wearing a lender’s name.
