Personal Loan for Salaried With Low CIBIL Score
A low CIBIL score narrows the market but does not close it for salaried borrowers. Banks are best odds are at your own salary bank; NBFCs are strong — salary slips carry real weight, at roughly 16%–32%. Secured routes stay open at any score and cost a fraction as much. Below: who lends, what it costs, and how to move the number.

Can salaried borrowers get a personal loan with a low CIBIL score?
A salaried borrower with a damaged score holds an advantage that is easy to underestimate: verifiable, predictable income. Lenders pricing a low-CIBIL file are pricing uncertainty, and a salary credit arriving on the same date every month from a recognisable employer removes a large part of it. This is why two applicants at an identical 620 — one salaried, one with irregular income — routinely receive offers several points apart.
The employer itself carries weight too. Most lenders maintain internal categories for employers, and a listed company, government body, bank or large IT firm sits in a better one than a small unregistered firm. It is not something you can change for a given application, but it does explain why colleagues with similar scores get different answers, and why a job change immediately before applying tends to hurt even when the new salary is higher.
Who lends at a CIBIL score salaried?
The market is a ladder rather than a wall — each tier applies a different cut-off, and the bottom two do not look at your score at all.
| Lender type | Odds at salaried | Rate | Ticket | What decides it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Public & private banks | Best odds are at your own salary bank | 10.5%–18% | Up to ₹40 lakh | Cut-offs usually 700+; own salary bank is the exception |
| NBFCs & digital lenders | Strong — salary slips carry real weight | 16%–32% | ₹50,000 – ₹5 lakh | Weighs income alongside the score |
| Gold loan | Open to everyone | 9%–24% | ₹25,000–₹50 lakh | No CIBIL check at all — the metal is the underwriting |
| Loan against FD | Open to everyone | FD rate + 1–2% | 85–95% of deposit | No score check; deposit keeps earning |
| Co-applicant loan | Depends on their file | 11%–20% | Set by their income | Priced on their score, not yours |
What does a low CIBIL score actually cost?
The clearest way to see the cost is to price the same loan twice. Take ₹2 lakh over 36 months. At a prime score you would be quoted around 12%, giving an EMI of ₹6,643. At salaried, the indicative rate is 24% — an EMI of ₹7,847. Across the loan that gap is ₹43,344, paid for nothing except the three digits on your report.
Read that figure as a budget rather than a penalty. If six months of repair work would move you into a better band, the question becomes whether the borrowing can wait six months to save ₹43,344 — and where it can, waiting is among the best-paid decisions available. Where it genuinely cannot, the secured routes below deliver prime-like pricing today without any score at all.
Cheaper routes that skip the score entirely
The first door for a salaried applicant with a low score is always the bank holding the salary account. Relationship-based offers are underwritten on observed behaviour — years of credits, balance patterns, existing product usage — rather than on the bureau number alone, and they regularly clear applicants whose score sits below the bank's published cut-off. Checking costs one app notification and frequently produces the best available rate.
Beyond that, NBFCs that specialise in salaried low-CIBIL lending are the mainstream route, typically at 16%–32% with tickets to about ₹5 lakh. Two structures worth knowing: a salary-overdraft facility, where a limit is set against monthly credits and interest is charged only on what you draw; and an employer-tied loan, where some organisations have arrangements with lenders that bypass score cut-offs entirely. Ask your HR department — this option is common and almost never advertised.
What is the minimum CIBIL score for a personal loan?
There is no statutory floor — every lender writes its own. In practice the market sorts itself: 750+ gets advertised pricing, 700–750 clears most bank policies, 600–700 is NBFC and digital territory, and below roughly 550 the unsecured market thins out almost entirely, leaving secured borrowing as the working route.
Beyond the threshold, two practical points. Applying to a lender whose bar you do not clear is not a near-miss — the filter is automatic and the attempt costs you an inquiry. But published cut-offs are not universal: banks routinely extend pre-approved offers to their own account-holders below the stated line, which makes your existing bank the cheapest first check available.
How to improve your approval chances
For salaried borrowers the fastest repair lever is usually the credit card, because it is where the damage typically sits. Bringing total utilization below 30% of total limits commonly adds 20–40 points within two statement cycles, and requesting a limit increase achieves the same ratio without repaying a rupee — provided spending stays where it is. Setting the card to auto-debit the full statement amount, not the minimum, prevents the problem recurring.
The second lever is the salary account itself. Six months of a clean account — no bounced mandates, a balance that does not empty before each credit, all income routed through one place — improves how every lender reads the file, including those that never see your payslip. And avoid changing jobs in the quarter before a planned application: most lenders want six months at the current employer, and the clock restarts when you move.
- Pull all four bureau reports first. Checking your own is a soft inquiry and never affects the score. Reporting errors are common at low scores and free to dispute.
- Clear anything live and overdue. An active delinquency suppresses the score continuously and triggers automatic declines.
- A secured card is the standard repair tool. Place a small deposit, receive a card against it, clear it in full monthly — history builds, the deposit keeps earning, and nothing can be declined.
- Stop applying while you repair. Each application leaves a hard inquiry; a cluster of them reads as distress.
- Do not tidy up by closing cards. Length of history and total available limit both feed the score, so an old unused card is quietly working for you.
- Check for a pre-approved offer where you already bank. These are underwritten on data the bank already holds, and they frequently sit below the tier your score would otherwise buy.
- Apply where your score actually fits. Aiming too high buys a rejection; settling too low buys an unnecessary rate. The lender table above is the map.
- Make your income legible. Route earnings through one account and keep it clean — where the score is weak, the bank statement carries the argument.
"Guaranteed approval, any CIBIL" — what to avoid
Low-score searches are among the most heavily targeted by advance-fee fraud and illegal lending apps, for the obvious reason that the people making them have fewest alternatives.
Walk away on either of these. A guarantee of approval "whatever your CIBIL" cannot be given honestly, because every regulated lender must assess whether you can repay before it commits. And an advance payment to release a sanctioned loan is the oldest fraud in the category — real charges are deducted at disbursal, never collected up front by transfer.
Three checks settle an app before you install it: it must name an RBI-registered bank or NBFC as the lender; it must never ask for contacts or photo-gallery permissions; and the money that arrives must match the sanction, with no pre-deduction. If you have already been caught, report on the RBI's Sachet portal and to the cyber-crime helpline 1930 — and note that a debt to an unregistered lender carries no credit-bureau consequence, which is precisely why such operators rely on threats. Our grievance and escalation guide lists every reporting channel.
One more, specific to low scores: "credit repair" services promising to delete accurate negative entries for a fee. Genuine errors can be disputed free with the bureaus in 30–45 days; accurate records cannot be removed by anyone, at any price.
