HSBC India as a card issuer
Before you compare a single HSBC card, check your city. HSBC India offers its credit cards only to residents of 21 cities, which in alphabetical order are Ahmedabad, Amritsar, Baroda, Bengaluru, Chandigarh, Chennai, Coimbatore, Delhi NCR, Gurgaon, Hyderabad, Indore, Jaipur, Kochi, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, Noida, Pune, Surat and Trivandrum. If you live elsewhere, none of the cards below is open for you, however good your income.
The cards are issued by The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation Limited, India, which is incorporated in Hong Kong SAR with limited liability. RBI's bank-wise table lists it as HSBC Ltd, with 10,24,926 credit cards outstanding in September 2026 (a provisional month), against 9,74,071 in September 2025. That is 50,855 more cards (10,24,926 minus 9,74,071), or growth of about 5.2% (50,855 divided by 9,74,071). HSBC's Indian website has also moved to a new address, and old links redirects there.
The lineup
HSBC keep a short list. The Visa Platinum card has no joining or annual fee. The RuPay Cashback card costs ₹499, Live+ ₹999 and TravelOne ₹4,999, and on all three the annual fee, GST included, is fully reversed when your yearly spend crosses a set mark. The Premier card is only for HSBC Premier banking customers. Two more cards, the HSBC Taj card and the RuPay Platinum card, are listed by the bank but not yet discussed about by us. All fees are plus GST.
What stands out
- Live+ returns 10% on five daily categories (dining, food delivery, grocery, shopping and utilities) up to ₹1,200 a month, and charges a forex mark-up of 1.99%, lower than the 3.5% that HSBC's own TravelOne charge.
- Premier charges 2.99% a month interest and 0.99% forex, with unlimited lounge access.
- Only HSBC's RuPay cards link to UPI, and UPI on a credit card is for merchant payments only, up to ₹1 lakh per card per day, ₹2 lakh for insurance and some other categories, and ₹5,000 in the first 24 hours.
Our full reviews cover HSBC Live+ and HSBC TravelOne, and the credit cards hub explains the basics for someone who is new in cards.
Which HSBC card for which need
With only five main cards, the choice at HSBC is coming down to whether you want cashback, miles or no fee. This table puts the fee next to the spend that reverses it, because that number decide the real cost for most people.
| Card | Annual fee | Fee reversed when yearly spend exceeds | Main earn |
|---|---|---|---|
| Visa Platinum | ₹0 | Not needed | 2 points per ₹150 |
| RuPay Cashback | ₹499 | ₹2,00,000 | 10% on dining, food delivery and grocery |
| Live+ | ₹999 | ₹2,00,000 | 10% on five categories, ₹1,200 a month cap |
| TravelOne | ₹4,999 | ₹8,00,000 | 4 points per ₹100 on flights and forex |
| Premier | ₹20,000 | Waived for Premier customers | 3 points per ₹100 |
Cashback on daily spends: Live+
Live+ is the card for people whose money goes on food, groceries and bills. The 10% rate applies to five groups, namely dining, food delivery, groceries, shopping and utility bills, up to ₹1,200 of cashback a month, so it fills up at ₹12,000 of such spends (₹1,200 divided by 10%). Everything else earns 1.5% with no cap, but Amazon, Flipkart and Myntra count as 1.5%, not 10%, and foreign currency spends earn nothing since 26 July 2026. Say you spend ₹12,000 in the 10% categories and ₹13,000 elsewhere each month: that is ₹1,200 plus ₹195 (1.5% of ₹13,000), or ₹1,395 a month, and ₹3,00,000 a year (₹25,000 times 12) clears the ₹2,00,000 fee reversal.
UPI and food: RuPay Cashback
The RuPay Cashback card works on UPI and pays 10% on dining, food delivery and grocery and 1% on other eligible spends, but the total of both is capped at ₹400 a month. That cap is very much small: ₹4,000 of food and grocery spend (₹400 divided by 10%) uses it all. Utilities are excluded. Lounge access is stated two ways by HSBC, 10 visits a year on the card page (up to 2 domestic a quarter and 2 international a year) and 4 a year, one a quarter, in the service guide, so ask HSBC which is correct before you counting on it. The forex mark-up is 3.5% under the terms, with a 0% offer that runs to 31 December 2026 as per the card page or 31 January 2027 as per the offer terms.
Travel and miles: TravelOne
TravelOne earns 2 points per ₹100 on most spends and 4 points per ₹100 on airline sites, travel aggregators and foreign currency spends, with the accelerated part capped at 50,000 points a month. Points move 1:1 to airline and hotel partners including Air India Maharaja Club, British Airways, Etihad and Flying Blue, and stay valid for 3 years. So ₹1,50,000 of flight bookings in a year gives 6,000 points (₹1,50,000 divided by 100, times 4), which become 6,000 miles. It also carry 6 domestic and 4 international lounge visits a year, but a 3.5% forex mark-up. With Amex not taking applications, as our American Express hub explains, TravelOne is HSBC's answer for anyone who wants miles.
No fee: Visa Platinum
The Visa Platinum card has no joining or annual fee and earns 2 points per ₹150. Most airline partners convert at 2 points to 1 mile, so ₹30,000 of monthly spend earns 400 points (₹30,000 divided by 150, times 2), or 200 miles. It also waives the 1% fuel surcharge on fills of ₹400 to ₹4,000, capped at ₹250 a month, but not in the first 90 days. Lounge visits is not listed for this card.
Premium: Premier
The Premier card comes only with an HSBC Premier relationship, which from 1 January 2026 means a quarterly total relationship balance of ₹50 lakh, a net monthly salary credit of ₹3 lakh, or a mortgage of ₹1.15 crore plus ₹50 lakh of balances within 12 months. Holders get unlimited domestic and international lounges with 8 international guest visits, 3 points per ₹100, points that do not expire, and a 0.99% forex mark-up. The ₹12,000 joining fee and ₹20,000 annual fee are waived for qualified Premier customers.
HSBC fees and charges
HSBC's charges are mostly same across its cards, with the Premier card the main exception. All fees and charges are exclusive of GST, so add 18% to the figures here.
Interest and the late fee
HSBC's finance charge is 45% a year, which is 3.75% a month, and it is charged from the date of each transaction once you carry a balance. Premier charges 2.99% a month (35.88% a year). On a ₹40,000 balance kept for one month, 3.75% comes to ₹1,500, against ₹1,196 on Premier (2.99% of ₹40,000).
HSBC sets the late fee at 100% of the Minimum Payment Due, with a floor of ₹250 and a ceiling of ₹1,200 a month, and HSBC charges it only if the minimum payment don't reach it within 3 days after the due date. So a minimum due of ₹800 means an ₹800 late fee, a minimum due of ₹200 still costs ₹250, and anything above ₹1,200 is capped at ₹1,200. Paying the minimum on time, is the cheapest habit you can have with this bank.
Cash, over-limit and payments
- Cash advance: 2.5% of the amount, minimum ₹500 (₹300 on Premier and Taj), with finance charge from the day of withdrawal. Premier's cash limit is 60% of the card limit.
- Over-limit: 2.5% of the excess or ₹500, whichever is higher, plus GST.
- Bounced cheque, dishonoured standing instruction or failed NACH: ₹500, or ₹350 on Premier and Taj.
- Cash payment at HSBC branches and drop boxes: ₹100.
- Balance transfer: 10.99% to 15.99% a year, with a 1.5% processing fee, minimum ₹200.
Rent, fuel and other special charges
Rental and related payments carry a 1% processing fee plus taxes, so a ₹25,000 rent payment costs ₹250 before GST. Fuel transactions carry the 1% surcharge, and HSBC waives it on fills of ₹400 to ₹4,000 only on Visa Platinum, RuPay Platinum and Premier; on Live+, TravelOne and RuPay Cashback there is no waiver and fuel earns nothing. The charges we read list no separate fee for wallet loads or utilities, but e-wallet loads earn nothing on Live+, RuPay Cashback, TravelOne and Visa Platinum, and utilities earn nothing on TravelOne, Visa Platinum and RuPay Cashback, while on Live+ it is in the 10% list.
Foreign currency
The mark-up varies more than anything else at HSBC: 0.99% on Premier, 1.99% on Live+, and 3.5% on TravelOne, Visa Platinum and RuPay Cashback (the last with its 0% offer for now). On ₹1,00,000 spent abroad, the difference between 3.5% and 1.99% is ₹1,510 (3.5% of ₹1,00,000 is ₹3,500, and 1.99% is ₹1,990), which is not a small money for one trip. Withdrawing cash abroad from your bank account at an overseas ATM costs ₹100.
HSBC card changes, 2025 to 2026
The HSBC documents we read carry no dated card change from 2024; the changes start in mid-2025 and most of them is about Live+. In date order:
- 15 July 2025, RuPay Cashback: a 0% forex mark-up offer began in place of the standard 3.5%. The card page says it runs until 31 December 2026 and the offer terms say 31 January 2027, so assume the earlier date and check after it.
- 1 January 2026, Premier: for Premier accounts opened from this date, the quarterly total relationship balance needed rose to ₹50 lakh (₹40 lakh for older accounts), and a new route via a ₹1.15 crore mortgage was added. A higher bar means the Premier card is harder to get now for new customers.
- 1 January 2026 to 31 March 2027: an ₹250 Amazon eGift voucher for applications completed online with video KYC.
- 26 July 2026, Live+: the most biggest change of the year. International spends stopped earning the 1.5% cashback, the forex mark-up was cut to 1.99%, Amazon and Flipkart shopping stayed at 1.5% outside the 10% list, and the 10% list was reset to five groups (dining, food delivery, grocery, shopping, utilities) under a ₹1,200 monthly cap. If you used Live+ abroad, you lose 1.5% cashback but pay a lower mark-up.
- 1 August 2026, Live+: the Live+ Reserve dining programme with DineWithTimesPrime started.
- 1 September 2026, Live+: 1 complimentary international lounge visit a year was added to the 2 domestic visits, which are limited to one every 6 months.
- 31 October 2026, Live+: the Myntra 10% launch offer ended, and Myntra is back to 1.5%.
Put together, HSBC has made Live+ more focused on spending at home: richer in daily categories, weaker abroad on rewards, but cheaper on forex. For the travel use TravelOne or Premier fits better now.
Eligibility, applying and customer care
For Live+, TravelOne, Visa Platinum and RuPay Cashback, HSBC asks the same things. If salaried, you need to be 18 to 65 and earn ₹6,00,000 a year or more; if self-employed, 25 to 65 with ₹12,00,000 or more. Residence in India, in one of the 21 cities, is a must. That is ₹50,000 a month for salaried people (₹6,00,000 divided by 12), a quite high bar for an no-fee card like Visa Platinum.
The documents are your latest salary slip if salaried, proof of residence, identity proof and PAN. HSBC's pages disagree slightly: the Live+ page lists the salary slip "or" the KYC papers, while the TravelOne page says "and". Keep all of them ready, it saves a second visit. The Premier card has no public document list, because only existing Premier customers can get it, through a branch or on 1800 120 4722.
There are three routes: a branch, the phone, or online with video KYC. Finish the online route with video KYC between 1 January 2026 and 31 March 2027 and HSBC adds a ₹250 Amazon eGift voucher. If you're not sure which card fits, try the card finder, and for a similar foreign-bank range look at our Standard Chartered India hub.
What the RBI requires of HSBC
- It must hand you a Key Fact Statement with the form and, if it declines you, write down the specific reasons.
- It needs your explicit consent, written or digital, for the card, any upgrade and any higher limit.
- It can't report your account to credit bureaus before you activate the card, and late fee or past-due reporting only start after 3 days past the due date.
- It has to close your card within seven working days of asking, dues paid, or pay you ₹500 per calendar day of delay.
- It must let you move your billing cycle at least once.
Approval is always HSBC's own decision, it is based on your income, existing limits and credit history.
