HSBC Premier Credit Card: the card that comes with the account
This Mastercard is HSBC India's card for its Premier banking customers, and there's no other way to get it. HSBC issues it only to existing qualified Premier customers with a Premier relationship in India, and the card stay valid only while that relationship does. It is active, but you apply through a branch or the Premier phone line, not the open online form HSBC uses for its other cards.
So the card can't be judged apart from the banking relationship. If you already keep ₹50 lakh with HSBC or have ₹3 lakh of salary credited every month, the card is mostly a perk on top: the ₹20,000 renewal fee is waived, and you get a low markup, unlimited lounges and points that never expire.
What matters most
- The 0.99% markup. HSBC says it applies anywhere, any time, with no conditions, far below the 3.5% that many Indian cards charges.
- Lounges. Unlimited domestic and international lounge access for cardholders, plus 8 international guest visits.
- Points. 3 per ₹100, worth ₹1 each at the Apple online store or 1:1 to select airline and hotel programmes, with no expiry.
What changed
The only dated change we found is to Premier status itself. From 1 January 2026, new Premier accounts need an average quarterly Total Relationship Balance (TRB) of ₹50 lakh, up from ₹40 lakh that still apply to accounts opened before that date, and a mortgage route was added: a mortgage of ₹1.15 crore plus a TRB of ₹50 lakh within 12 months. The salary route asks ₹3 lakh net a month.
What the HSBC Premier card costs
Two fees to understand. The joining fee of ₹12,000 is charged after you activate the card, and with 18% GST it comes to ₹14,160 (₹12,000 plus ₹2,160). The annual renewal fee is ₹20,000, but HSBC waives it for qualified Premier customers, so for most holders the joining fee is the only fee they ever pays. Add-on cards are free.
When the ₹20,000 renewal applies
The waiver isn't tied to spending at all. Keep a quarterly TRB of ₹50 lakh (₹40 lakh if your Premier account opened before 1 January 2026), or a net salary credit of ₹3 lakh a month, or meet the mortgage route, and renewal is free. Fall short on all three and the ₹20,000 plus GST become payable, ₹23,600 in all (₹20,000 plus ₹3,600). No amount of card spend substitutes for the relationship.
Interest, late fee and cash
All HSBC charges are quoted without GST. Interest is 2.99% a month, 35.88% a year, below the 3.75% HSBC charges on its other cards, yet a ₹1 lakh balance carried for 30 days still costs about ₹2,949 (₹1,00,000 times 35.88% times 30, divided by 365). The late fee equals 100% of the minimum payment due, at least ₹250 and at most ₹1,200 a month, and only if the minimum hasn't reached HSBC within 3 days of the due date.
- Cash advance: 2.5% of the amount, minimum ₹300, with finance charges from the withdrawal date; the cash limit is 60% of your card limit.
- Over-limit: 2.5% of the excess or ₹500, whichever is higher, plus GST.
- Balance transfer: 10.99% to 15.99% a year, plus 1.5% processing (minimum ₹200).
- Cash payment at a branch or drop box ₹100; bounced cheque or failed NACH ₹350; card replacement ₹100.
Forex, rent and fuel
On ₹1 lakh spent abroad the 0.99% markup is ₹990, plus ₹178.20 GST (18% of ₹990), so ₹1,168.20. A card at 3.5% would take ₹3,500 plus ₹630 GST, or ₹4,130, so Premier saves ₹2,961.80 on every lakh (₹4,130 minus ₹1,168.20). Rent and related payments carry a 1% processing fee plus taxes. Fuel fills of ₹400 to ₹4,000 get a 1% surcharge waiver, but fuel earn no points. We found no wallet, utility or education surcharge in the schedule.

How HSBC Premier points add up
The base rate is 3 reward points for every ₹100. Hotels, flights and car rentals booked through HSBC's Travel with Points earn up to 12X, but HSBC doesn't say 12X of what base or whether there is a cap, so we leave it out of the sums. Fuel, cash advances, fees and disputed transactions earn nothing.
A long list of categories earn points only on the first ₹1,00,000 a month, counted together: utilities, tax, rent, insurance, jewellery, e-wallets, education, government, money transfer, bail and bond, and payments to financial and non-financial institutions. A household paying a big insurance premium and school fees in the same month will reach to that line quickly.
What a point is worth
HSBC publishes one rupee value: 1 point is worth ₹1 at the Apple online store. Points also convert 1:1 into select airline miles and hotel points in the HSBC India Mobile Banking app, where the worth depend on the programme. No redemption fee is stated, and Premier card points never expire, so there's no hurry to spend them. The welcome benefit is 20,000 points once you start using the card, ₹20,000 at Apple, which is more than the ₹14,160 joining fee with GST. There is no published milestone.
Three worked examples
Values use the published ₹1 a point at Apple and leave out the 12X travel rate. All three are qualified Premier customers, so renewal is free, and foreign spends are assumed to earn the base rate, as nothing in HSBC's terms excludes them.
| Per month | Light | Typical | Heavy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Everyday spends | ₹40,000: 1,200 points | ₹1,00,000: 3,000 points | ₹1,60,000: 4,800 points |
| Utilities, insurance, tax, education | ₹10,000: 300 points | ₹30,000: 900 points | ₹1,20,000: 3,000 points (on ₹1,00,000) |
| Foreign currency spends | Nil | ₹20,000: 600 points | ₹20,000: 600 points |
| Points a year | 18,000 | 54,000 | 1,00,800 |
| Value at ₹1 a point | ₹18,000 | ₹54,000 | ₹1,00,800 |
| Forex markup with GST a year | Nil | ₹2,803.68 | ₹2,803.68 |
Light, ₹50,000 a month. ₹40,000 of everyday spends earn 1,200 points and ₹10,000 of bills 300, so 1,500 a month and 18,000 a year (1,500 times 12). In year one the 20,000 welcome points lift that to 38,000 (18,000 plus 20,000), against a ₹14,160 joining fee.
Typical, ₹1,50,000 a month. 3,000 plus 900 plus 600 is 4,500 points a month, 54,000 a year (4,500 times 12). The ₹20,000 spent abroad each month costs ₹198 in markup (0.99% of ₹20,000) plus ₹35.64 GST (18% of ₹198), so ₹233.64 a month and ₹2,803.68 a year (₹233.64 times 12). At 3.5% it would be ₹700 plus ₹126 GST, ₹826 a month or ₹9,912 a year (₹826 times 12), so the low markup saves ₹7,108.32 (₹9,912 minus ₹2,803.68).
Heavy, ₹3,00,000 a month. ₹1,20,000 of insurance, tax and school fees earns on only ₹1,00,000, so ₹20,000 of it gets nothing. ₹1,60,000 of everyday spends earns 4,800 (3 per ₹100), and 4,800 plus 3,000 plus 600 makes 8,400 a month and 1,00,800 a year (8,400 times 12). That is ₹1,00,800 only if you actually want that much from Apple; moved to miles, the value is whatever the airline gives.

Eligibility: the Premier relationship comes first
There are no separate income or age rules for the card. HSBC requires you to be an existing qualified Premier customer with a Premier relationship in India, and it publishes no age limits for this card. Premier qualification has three routes:
- An average quarterly Total Relationship Balance of ₹50,00,000, or ₹40,00,000 if your Premier account was opened before 1 January 2026.
- A salary account with a net monthly salary credit of ₹3,00,000.
- From 1 January 2026, a mortgage of ₹1.15 crore along with a TRB of ₹50 lakh within 12 months.
The salary route works out to ₹36 lakh a year of net pay (₹3,00,000 times 12), which puts the card out of reach for most salaried people however good there credit score is.
Documents and applying
HSBC doesn't list documents for the Premier card, as the applicants already banks with it. You apply at a branch or by calling the Premier line, 1800 120 4722, which runs 24x7; the other Premier number is 1800 266 3456. HSBC's other cards are sold online with video KYC, but the Premier card isn't part of that route.
How HSBC decides
- Being a Premier customer gets you considered, not approved: the RBI requires HSBC to assess your own means and the limits you hold elsewhere.
- HSBC must hand you a one-page Key Fact Statement with the application and, if it declines, the specific reasons in writing.
- The card is issued only with your explicit consent, and it can't be reported to the bureaus before you activate it.

These are the bank's published conditions. Meeting them does not guarantee a card: approval and the credit limit are the bank's decision.
Who should take the HSBC Premier card
If you already are a HSBC Premier customer who travels abroad a few times a year, take it. After the joining fee, which the welcome points more than cover at Apple, you pay nothing while you stay qualified, and every foreign rupee costs 0.99% instead of the usual 3.5%. Add unlimited lounges and points that never expire, and few cards in India gives as much for so little running cost.
For people outside Premier, it is not really an option. Moving ₹50 lakh into HSBC just to get a card would be the tail wagging the dog: the decision is about where you bank, and the card follows. If your balances could dip below the bar, remember the ₹20,000 renewal fee returns once you miss all three criteria.
The weak spots are smaller. Fuel earns nothing, the capped group stops earning after ₹1 lakh a month, and HSBC hasn't published the insurance amounts, only that international travel insurance covers lost luggage, delays and travel documents, plus lost card cover up to ₹3,00,000. The 12X travel rate sound attractive, but with no stated base or cap you can't plan around it.
Pros
- Forex markup of just 0.99%, with no conditions attached
- Unlimited domestic and international lounge access for cardholders, plus 8 international guest visits
- Points never expire and are worth ₹1 each at the Apple online store
- 20,000 welcome reward points when you start using the card
- Interest of 2.99% a month, lower than the 3.75% on other HSBC cards
- Lost card cover up to ₹3,00,000
Cons
- Only for HSBC Premier customers, with a ₹50 lakh balance or ₹3 lakh salary bar
- ₹12,000 plus GST joining fee even for qualified customers
- ₹20,000 plus GST annual fee if you stop meeting the Premier criteria
- Points on utilities, rent, insurance, tax and similar spends stop after ₹1,00,000 a month
- No points on fuel, and no published base or cap for the 12X travel rate
- Age limits, documents and insurance amounts are not published

FIRST Wealth Credit Card (IDFC FIRST Bank)
The IDFC FIRST Wealth card is lifetime free for people earning ₹36 lakh a year or more, which matches the Premier salary route on paper. It has charged zero forex markup since 9 September 2026, but international spends stopped earning points on 26 October 2026. Points are worth ₹0.25, and lounge access is 1 domestic and 1 international visit a quarter, needing ₹20,000 of spend in the month before.
Which one fits
- HSBC Premier if you already bank as a Premier customer and want the lowest running cost.
- AU Zenith+ if you earn ₹2.5 lakh a month and want lots of lounge visits with a fixed ₹1 point.
