HDFC Diners Club Black Metal vs ICICI Emeralde Private Metal: Who Pays More

ICICI Bank's Emeralde Private Metal is invite only and earns 6 points per ₹200, 3% at ₹1 a point, but it charges no late, cash advance or over-limit fees and includes ₹3 crore of air accident cover.

Two metal cards for big spenders, with different strengths
HDFC Bank's Diners Club Black Metal Edition and ICICI Bank's Emeralde Private Metal Credit Card are both metal cards with fees between ₹10,000 and ₹12,499, and people with large monthly bills often weighs one against the other. Both give unlimited lounge access to primary and add-on members and charge a 2% forex markup. The differences are in the earn, in the fine print on fees and in whom can get them.
Who each card is for
Diners Club Black Metal earns 5 Reward Points per ₹150, doubles that on weekend dining at standalone restaurants, and adds 10,000 bonus points for each calendar quarter with ₹4 lakh of spends. Its points go furthest on HDFC's SmartBuy, at up to ₹1 each. Anyone with a net monthly income above ₹2.5 lakh, or an ITR above ₹30 lakh, can apply for it.
Emeralde Private Metal earns 6 points per ₹200, worth ₹1 each on flights, hotel vouchers and a list of brand vouchers, and gives 12,500 points at joining and every year after. It is invite only and tied to your ICICI relationship, so the card can be downgraded or withdrawn if you don't keep the minimum relationship value. In return it drop late fees, cash advance fees and over-limit fees altogether.
Verdict in two sentences
Diners Club Black Metal earns more on the same spending, waives its fee at a lower bar and charges 1.99% a month interest instead of 3.75%. Emeralde Private Metal suit an invited ICICI customer who wants penalty-free terms, lounges with no spend condition and large insurance cover, and who spends ₹10 lakh a year to get the fee reversed.
Recent changes
- Diners Club Black Metal: insurance points capped at 5,000 a month from 1 July 2025; HDFC's 15 May 2026 revision left the earn rate unchanged but set the currency conversion fee at 1.75% and the metal card reissue fee at ₹3,500.
- Emeralde Private Metal: rent and wallet loads stopped earning from 5 February 2024; the forex markup has been 2% since 15 November 2024; from 15 January 2026 each add-on card cost ₹3,500 plus GST one time and the conversion fee is 2%; the minimum amount due calculation changed on 1 March 2026; and a replacement Priority Pass will cost ₹300 from 11 December 2026.
Fees and charges side by side
| Charge | HDFC Diners Club Black Metal | ICICI Emeralde Private Metal |
|---|---|---|
| Joining and annual fee | ₹10,000 + GST each | ₹12,499 + GST each |
| Waiver | ₹8 lakh of spends in the 12 months before renewal | That year's fee reversed on ₹10 lakh of spends in the anniversary year |
| Fee-linked points | None | 12,500 points at joining and each year |
| Add-on card | Free | ₹3,500 + GST one time per card |
| Interest | 1.99% a month (23.88% a year) | 3.75% a month (45% a year) |
| Late payment fee | Slabs up to ₹1,300 | Nil |
| Cash advance fee | 2.5% or ₹500, whichever is higher | Nil (interest still applies) |
| Over-limit fee | 2.5%, minimum ₹550, only with consent | Not levied |
| Card replacement | ₹3,500 | ₹3,500 |
With 18% GST, Diners Club Black Metal costs ₹11,800 (₹10,000 plus ₹1,800) and Emeralde Private Metal ₹14,748.82 (₹12,499 plus ₹2,249.82). HDFC waives the renewal fee once you spend ₹8 lakh in the 12 months before renewal, about ₹66,667 a month (₹8,00,000 divided by 12). ICICI's terms reverse the current year's fee when you complete the anniversary year with ₹10 lakh of spends, about ₹83,333 a month; the card page words it differently, as a waiver for the next year. Either way ICICI's bar are higher by ₹2 lakh.
Emeralde gives something back on the fee: 12,500 reward points as a joining and annual bonus, credited 45 days after the fee is realised and the card activated, worth ₹12,500 if redeemed for flights or the ₹1 vouchers. Diners Club Black Metal has no fee-linked points, only memberships for early spending (see Benefits).
Penalties and interest
This is Emeralde's strongest suit. Its card page lists the late fee as nil and the MITC exclude it from ICICI's late-fee table, and there's no cash advance fee and no over-limit fee. Diners Club Black Metal follows HDFC's slabs, ₹900 on a ₹10,001 to ₹25,000 bill and ₹1,300 above ₹50,000, and charges 2.5% or ₹500 on cash. But if you ever carry a balance, HDFC's 1.99% a month is far below ICICI's 3.75%: ₹2 lakh carried for 30 days costs about ₹3,925 on the Diners card (30 times ₹2,00,000 times 23.88%, divided by 365) and about ₹7,397 on Emeralde (the same sum at 45%).
Rest of the charges look alike. Both take 1% on rent and on education through third-party apps. HDFC adds 1% on a fuel transaction above ₹15,000, on utilities above ₹50,000 a month and on wallet loads above ₹10,000; ICICI takes 1% on fuel above ₹10,000 and on utilities above ₹50,000. Add-ons are free with HDFC, but with ICICI each one cost ₹4,130 once GST is added (₹3,500 plus ₹630).
Rewards: higher earn against wider ₹1 redemptions
How each card earns
- Diners Club Black Metal: 5 Reward Points per ₹150, which HDFC's terms imply by calling 10 points per ₹150 the 2X rate, counted on whole ₹150 steps. Weekend dining at standalone restaurants on Saturday and Sunday earns 2X, and SmartBuy bookings earn 10X on hotels and 5X on flights; HDFC states no cap on either in the pages we read. Grocery points stop at 2,000 a month, utilities and telecom at 2,000 each, insurance at 5,000, and a statement cycle at 75,000. A ₹4 lakh calendar quarter bring 10,000 bonus points.
- Emeralde Private Metal: 6 points per ₹200 on eligible retail spends. Grocery, utilities and education are each capped at 1,000 points a statement cycle. Insurance is capped too, but ICICI's terms document states it two ways: 5,000 points a cycle in the text, which matches the MITC, and 1,000 in its category table. Government services, tax, rent, property management, wallet loads and fuel earn nothing, and points on EMI is reversed.
What the points are worth
Diners Club Black Metal points can be redeemed on SmartBuy at up to 1:1, so up to ₹1 a point, with flights and hotels covering up to 70% of a booking and capped at 75,000 points a month. HDFC don't state a value for other options. At ₹1, 5 points per ₹150 is about 3.33% back (₹5 on ₹150) and weekend dining about 6.67% (₹10 on ₹150).
Emeralde Private Metal spells its values out, which is a plus: ₹1 a point on flights and hotel vouchers and on vouchers for Apple, Tanishq, Tumi, Coach, Brooks Brothers, Emporio Armani, Jimmy Choo, G-Star Raw, Canali and Mother Care; ₹0.60 on other catalogue items; and ₹0.40 as statement credit, capped at 50,000 points a cycle. At ₹1, 6 points per ₹200 is 3%, but as statement credit only 1.2%. Points last 3 years on both cards and neither bank charge a redemption fee.
Three spenders, both cards
Points are valued at ₹1 on both, that being the best redemption each of them offer. "Weekend dining" is standalone restaurants on Saturdays and Sundays, and "travel" means bookings made direct, not through SmartBuy.
| Spender | Monthly mix | Diners Club Black Metal points a year | Emeralde Private Metal points a year | Diners Club Black Metal a year, net | Emeralde Private Metal a year, net |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| ₹75,000 a month | Shopping ₹45,000, weekend dining ₹9,000, groceries ₹12,000, utilities ₹6,000, fuel ₹3,000 | 32,400 | 38,420 (with the 12,500 bonus) | ₹32,400 (fee waived) | ₹29,671 (with ₹6,000 of vouchers, fee paid) |
| ₹1,80,000 a month | Shopping ₹1,08,000, weekend dining ₹18,000, travel ₹24,000, groceries ₹18,000, utilities ₹12,000 | 1,19,200 (with 40,000 bonus) | 77,300 (with the 12,500 bonus) | ₹1,19,200 (fee waived) | ₹83,300 (with ₹6,000 of vouchers, fee reversed) |
| ₹3,00,000 a month | Shopping ₹1,50,000, weekend dining ₹24,000, travel ₹48,000, spends abroad ₹48,000, groceries ₹18,000, utilities ₹12,000 | 1,69,600 (with 40,000 bonus) | 1,20,500 (with the 12,500 bonus) | ₹1,69,600 (fee waived) | ₹1,26,500 (with ₹6,000 of vouchers, fee reversed) |
₹75,000 a month. Diners: 1,500 points on shopping (₹45,000 divided by 150, times 5), 600 on weekend dining at 10 per ₹150, 400 on groceries and 200 on utilities, with fuel earning nothing, so 2,700 a month and 32,400 a year. Quarters of ₹2,25,000 (₹75,000 times 3) miss the ₹4 lakh bonus, but ₹9 lakh a year (₹75,000 times 12) clear the ₹8 lakh waiver. Emeralde: 1,350 on shopping, 270 on dining, 360 on groceries and 180 on utilities, at 6 per ₹200 each, give 2,160 a month or 25,920 a year, and with the 12,500 bonus that is 38,420 points. ₹9 lakh of spends earns the ₹3,000 EaseMyTrip vouchers at ₹4 lakh and at ₹8 lakh, ₹6,000 in all, but misses ₹10 lakh, so the ₹14,748.82 fee stays and the net is ₹29,671.
₹1,80,000 a month. Diners: 3,600 on shopping, 1,200 on weekend dining, 800 on travel, 600 on groceries and 400 on utilities make 6,600 a month and 79,200 a year. Every quarter's ₹5,40,000 (₹1,80,000 times 3) passes ₹4 lakh, adding 40,000 bonus points (10,000 times 4), so 1,19,200. Emeralde: 6 per ₹200 on ₹1,50,000 of shopping, dining and travel is 4,500, plus 540 on groceries and 360 on utilities, so 5,400 a month and 64,800 a year. With the 12,500 bonus, ₹6,000 of vouchers and the fee reversed on ₹21,60,000 of spends (₹1,80,000 times 12), the year is worth ₹83,300.
₹3,00,000 a month. Diners: 5,000 on shopping, 1,600 on weekend dining, 1,600 each on travel and on spends abroad, 600 on groceries and 400 on utilities come to 10,800 a month, 1,29,600 a year and 1,69,600 with the quarterly bonus. Emeralde: ₹2,70,000 of shopping, dining, travel and foreign spends at 6 per ₹200 earn 8,100, plus 540 and 360, so 9,000 a month and 1,08,000 a year; the bonus and vouchers take it to ₹1,26,500. The ₹48,000 spent abroad costs ₹1,132.80 a month in markup and GST on either card (2% is ₹960, plus ₹172.80).
Diners Club Black Metal wins all three at ₹1 a point, by the most where the quarterly bonus kick in. What narrows the gap is flexibility: Emeralde's ₹1 value covers more kinds of redemption, while the Diners cap of 75,000 points a month on flights and hotels means a 1,69,600-point year needs at least three months of redemptions (1,69,600 divided by 75,000 is about 2.3).
Lounges, insurance, travel and lifestyle extras
Lounge access
Both card give unlimited lounge visits to primary and add-on members. Diners Club Black Metal covers 1,300+ lounges in India and abroad through the Diners Club card, with the list kept in the Diners Travel Tool app. Emeralde Private Metal gives unlimited domestic visits and unlimited Priority Pass visits abroad with no spend condition, as it is exempt from ICICI's ₹75,000 quarterly spend rule; guests pays USD 29 plus GST a visit.
Insurance
Emeralde Private Metal lists real numbers: air accident cover of ₹3 crore for the primary cardholder, purchase protection of ₹1,40,000, credit shield of ₹1 lakh, lost checked baggage of ₹84,000 and card liability of ₹50,000. HDFC's group policy describes covers for "Super Premium" cards without naming which cards those are, so we don't credit Diners Club Black Metal with any insurance. If cover matter to you, Emeralde is the clear choice.
Fuel and forex
Diners Club Black Metal has no fuel surcharge waiver at all. Emeralde waives the 1% surcharge at all fuel stations, and ICICI states the limit two ways: its terms document gives a maximum waiver of ₹1,000 a statement cycle, while the MITC limits it to transactions up to ₹4,000 and waiver-eligible spends up to ₹1,00,000 a cycle. We follow the terms document, and in practice the MITC's ₹1,00,000 limit works out to same ₹1,000 (1% of it). Both charge a 2% forex markup; on rupee payments abroad it's 1.75% on HDFC and 2% on ICICI.
Welcome, golf and dining
- Diners Club Black Metal: annual Club Marriott, Amazon Prime and Swiggy One memberships on ₹1.5 lakh of spends within 90 days of issue; 6 complimentary golf games a quarter, up to 24 a year; up to 40% off dining through Swiggy Dineout; and a 24x7 concierge.
- Emeralde Private Metal: a 1-year Taj Epicure membership and 12 months of EazyDiner Prime; unlimited golf rounds or lessons; BookMyShow buy one get one, up to ₹750 off, twice a month; and cover for cancellation charges on domestic flight, hotel and movie bookings up to ₹12,000 for the first two cancellations.
- Network: Diners Club for the HDFC card and Mastercard for Emeralde.
On extras alone the two is close, with ICICI ahead on insurance and fuel and HDFC ahead on the welcome memberships.
Eligibility: apply openly or wait for an invite
| Rule | HDFC Diners Club Black Metal | ICICI Emeralde Private Metal |
|---|---|---|
| How you get it | Open application, online or at a branch | By invitation only, through your Relationship Manager |
| Age | 21 to 60 (salaried), 21 to 65 (self-employed) | 21 to 65 |
| Income | Net monthly income above ₹2.5 lakh (salaried); ITR above ₹30 lakh a year (self-employed) | Not published |
| Relationship condition | None stated; an earlier card is not required | Minimum relationship value with ICICI, or the card can be downgraded or withdrawn |
| Documents | Identity, address and income proof | Identity, address and income proof |
The Diners card sets a high but public bar. Salaried applicants need a net monthly income above ₹2.5 lakh, which is ₹30 lakh a year (₹2.5 lakh times 12), and the self-employed an ITR above ₹30 lakh, and you don't need to have held a card before. Indian nationals can apply online or at a branch.
Emeralde Private Metal publishes no income rule at all. ICICI asks interested customers to contact their Relationship Manager, and its MITC calls it a relationship-based product, so what count is the size of your banking with ICICI as much as your salary. Remember that the card can be downgraded or withdrawn if that relationship value falls below the minimum, a condition the HDFC card don't have.
For both, the bank alone decides. The RBI's 2025 card Directions require an assessment of your independent financial means and your existing limits, and written reasons if an application is turned down. On Experian's 300 to 900 scale a score above 750 is generally considered good, and a clean repayment record help with either bank. Our eligibility criteria guide covers the general checks.
Verdict: earn more with HDFC, worry less with ICICI
Pick Diners Club Black Metal if

- you eat out at standalone restaurants on weekends, where the points double;
- you might revolve a balance now and then, since 1.99% a month is far below 3.75%.
Pick Emeralde Private Metal if
- ICICI invites you and you already keeps a large relationship there;
- you want no late fee, no cash advance fee and no over-limit fee;
- you value ₹3 crore of air accident cover and a fuel surcharge waiver;
- you can able to spend ₹10 lakh a year so the fee gets reversed.
When neither suits
