BPCL SBI Card OCTANE Review: 25 Points per ₹100 on BPCL Fuel
BPCL SBI Card OCTANE is a ₹1,499 (plus GST) fuel co-brand that earns 25 Reward Points per ₹100 at BPCL pumps, worth 6.25% at ₹0.25 a point, and 10 points per ₹100 on groceries, dining, movies and departmental stores. The fuel rate stops at 2,500 points a cycle, which is ₹10,000 of fuel, and fuel paid by UPI earns nothing. It suits drivers who fill up at BPCL every week and spend ₹2 lakh a year, so the renewal fee is reversed.

How OCTANE pays you at the pump
OCTANE is the higher-fee of SBI Card's two fuel cards made with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL). Swipe it at a BPCL outlet and every ₹100 of fuel or lubricants earns 25 Reward Points. Each point is worth ₹0.25 when you redeem it for free fuel, so that's 6.25% back, and SBI Card adds the 1% surcharge waiver to market it as 7.25% value back. It comes on Visa or RuPay, and the RuPay version can be linked to UPI. See the full lineup on our SBI Card hub.
Three points that decide its value
- The fuel cap. Fuel points stop at 2,500 per statement cycle. At 25 per ₹100 that is ₹10,000 of BPCL fuel a month; anything you fill above it earn nothing extra.
- Only BPCL, only by swipe. Fuel at other company pumps, and fuel at BPCL paid through UPI on the RuPay card, earn no points and no surcharge waiver.
- Strong second category. Groceries, departmental stores, dining and movies earn 10 points per ₹100 (2.5%), up to 7,500 points a month, which make it a useful second engine for the card.
What changed recently
Rent payments stopped earning points from 15 April 2024. From 10 January 2026 the 4 yearly domestic lounge visits work only at lounges on SBI Card's "Set A" list, which names 16 lounges in 8 cities, even though the card page still headline it simply as 4 visits. From 1 December 2026, every SBI card will charge 1% on the whole fuel bill of a cycle once fuel spends cross ₹50,000, a rule notified on 27 October 2026.
Status: active, with online applications open. Our credit cards guide has other fuel and everyday options.
OCTANE fees and charges
₹1,499 and how to get it reversed
OCTANE charges ₹1,499 a year, joining and renewal alike, and 18% GST is extra, ₹269.82, so the bill is ₹1,768.82. Add-on cards are nil. The renewal fee is reversed when last year's spends reach ₹2,00,000, about ₹16,667 a month (₹2,00,000 divided by 12). A family putting fuel, groceries and dining on one card can reach that, but fuel alone at the ₹10,000 cap only gives ₹1,20,000 a year, so it will not do it by itself.
The welcome benefit offset most of the first fee: 6,000 bonus points, which SBI Card values at ₹1,500, credited within 30 days of paying the annual fee.
Fuel-related charges
Fuel pumps add a surcharge to card payments. OCTANE refunds 1% on BPCL transactions of up to ₹4,000 when you swipe at the machine, up to ₹100 per statement cycle. Keep each fill at ₹4,000 or less to get it, and don't pay by UPI, because the waiver don't apply there. The new 1% fee from 1 December 2026 hits only when a cycle's fuel spends pass ₹50,000, so even a heavy driver stays well clear.
Interest, late fees and payment charges
Carry a balance and you pay 3.75% a month, 45% a year, a rate SBI Card has charged since 1 November 2024. Interest-free time of 20 to 50 days exists only when the last bill is paid in full. The late payment charge depend on what is due: nil up to ₹100, ₹100 to ₹1,300 above that, plus ₹100 per cycle after two straight missed minimums, all before GST, under slabs revised from 1 May 2026. Paying at an SBI branch in cash costs ₹250, by cheque ₹200.
Other fees
- Forex markup: 3.5% on foreign currency spends, and on rupee spends of ₹1,000 and above with merchants based abroad.
- Cash advance: 2.5% or ₹500, whichever is higher, and interest from the day of withdrawal.
- Rent payments: a ₹199 processing fee plus GST each time. Since 1 November 2025, 1% on wallet top-ups over ₹1,000 and on education fees paid via third-party apps.
- Utilities above ₹50,000 in a cycle: 1% of the total since 1 December 2024. Transport above ₹30,000 a transaction: 1% from 1 December 2026.
- Over-limit, only if you opted in: 2.5% of the excess, minimum ₹600.

OCTANE rewards, redemption and three drivers
Earn rates and caps
- BPCL fuel and lubricants: 25 points per ₹100 (6.25%), capped at 2,500 points per statement cycle. The terms also say points can be earned on a maximum fuel spend of ₹10,000 a month, which match the cap.
- Bharat Gas LPG on the Bharat Gas website or app: 25 points per ₹100, capped at 500 points per billing cycle, so ₹2,000 of bookings.
- Groceries, departmental stores, dining and movies: 10 points per ₹100 (2.5%), up to 7,500 points a month, which you would reach at ₹75,000 of such spends (7,500 divided by 10, times ₹100).
- Everything else: 1 point per ₹100 (0.25%), except wallet loads and fuel at other pumps.
No points on rent (since 15 April 2024), wallet loads, cash, balance transfer, Flexipay, merchant EMI, fees or UPI fuel payments. At Metro Cash and Carry and Walmart, grocery and store spends stay at the base rate.
What the points are worth
4 points give ₹1 of free fuel at BPCL outlets, redeemed instantly at the machine with no minimum balance, or as BPCL fuel e-vouchers. Statement credit pays the same ₹0.25 a point but carries a ₹99 plus GST fee, and SBI Card doesn't state any fee for instant fuel redemption, so redeeming at the pump is the more sensible route of all. The catalogue value is not published. Points not used within 12 months of the enrolment year carry over one more year and then lapse, about 24 months in all.
Welcome and milestones
6,000 bonus points (₹1,500) after the annual fee is paid. An e-gift voucher worth ₹2,000 from Aditya Birla Fashion, Yatra or Hush Puppies at ₹3 lakh of yearly spends. The renewal fee reversal at ₹2 lakh.
Three drivers, worked out
| Per month | Light | Typical | Heavy |
|---|---|---|---|
| BPCL fuel (swiped) | ₹3,000 | ₹8,000 | ₹15,000 |
| Bharat Gas on the app | Nil | ₹1,000 | ₹2,000 |
| Groceries, dining, movies | ₹4,000 | ₹10,000 | ₹20,000 |
| Other spends | ₹3,000 | ₹6,000 | ₹15,000 |
| Points a month | 1,180 | 3,310 | 5,150 |
| Points plus surcharge refund a year | ₹3,900 | ₹10,890 | ₹16,650 |
| Milestone voucher | None | ₹2,000 | ₹2,000 |
| Renewal fee | ₹1,768.82 paid | Reversed | Reversed |
Light, ₹10,000 a month (scooter or small car). ₹3,000 of BPCL fuel earns 750 points, ₹4,000 of groceries and dining 400, and ₹3,000 elsewhere 30, so 1,180 a month and 14,160 a year, worth ₹3,540. The 1% refund on ₹3,000 is ₹30 a month, ₹360 a year, making ₹3,900. Yearly spend is ₹1,20,000, under ₹2 lakh, so the ₹1,768.82 fee is payable and ₹3,900 less that leaves ₹2,131.18.
Typical, ₹25,000 a month (daily car commute). 2,000 points from ₹8,000 of fuel, 250 from ₹1,000 of LPG, 1,000 from ₹10,000 of groceries and dining and 60 from ₹6,000 elsewhere make 3,310 a month, 39,720 a year, worth ₹9,930. Add ₹80 a month of surcharge refund, ₹960 a year, for ₹10,890. ₹25,000 times 12 is ₹3,00,000, so the fee is reversed and the ₹2,000 voucher come too, ₹12,890 in all.
Heavy, ₹52,000 a month (long-distance driver). Only ₹10,000 of the ₹15,000 fuel earns, giving the 2,500-point cap; the other ₹5,000 earn nothing. LPG of ₹2,000 hits its 500-point cap, ₹20,000 of groceries and dining earns 2,000 and ₹15,000 elsewhere 150. That is 5,150 points a month, 61,800 a year, worth ₹15,450, plus the ₹100 monthly refund cap, ₹1,200 a year, so ₹16,650, and with the voucher ₹18,650. ₹52,000 times 12 is ₹6,24,000, well past the waiver.

Getting the BPCL SBI Card OCTANE
Age, income and score
The usual SBI Card rules apply to OCTANE. Salaried applicants need to be 21 or more, self-employed ones above 25 when applying online, and retired pensioners above 40 are also accepted online. SBI Card's page give the upper age as 60 in one section and 70 in another, and does not say which wins.
There's no published income floor for this card. SBI Card's card finder lists OCTANE in the "50 to 99K" monthly income band, but that is a browsing filter and SBI Card does not call it an eligibility rule. What it does say is that a score preferably between 750 and 900 and a positive repayment history help, an SBI account is not mandatory, and you must live where SBI Card operates.

RBI rules make SBI Card assess your own income and existing credit limits before issuing, provide a Key Fact Statement when you apply, and put the reasons for any rejection in writing. The approval and the limit are SBI Card's decision.

Who OCTANE suits and who should pass
The ideal user drives daily, has a BPCL outlet on the route and fills up ₹8,000 to ₹10,000 a month by card swipe. That person gets 6.25% on fuel, 2.5% on groceries and dining, a reversed fee and a ₹2,000 voucher, worth ₹12,890 in our typical example. For a ₹1,499 card that is a strong return.
If the nearest pump is HPCL or Indian Oil, the main benefit simply disappears, and the base rate of 0.25% is poor. The same goes for drivers who pays by UPI at the pump out of habit; switch to swiping or the card loses its point. Light users below ₹2 lakh a year also pay ₹1,768.82 each year, which eat into the value.
The trade-off is focus. You get a very high rate on a narrow set of spends with tight caps, so OCTANE works best as one of two cards, paired with a general cashback or online card for the rest. Our best credit cards list can help pick that partner. Before applying, look at your last three months of fuel receipts, they will tell you quick if most fills was at BPCL.
Pros
- 25 points per ₹100 on BPCL fuel, worth 6.25%, plus a 1% surcharge refund on fills up to ₹4,000
- 10 points per ₹100 (2.5%) on groceries, dining, movies and departmental stores, up to 7,500 points a month
- 6,000 welcome points worth ₹1,500 against a ₹1,499 fee
- Points redeem instantly as free fuel at BPCL with no minimum balance
- RuPay variant works on UPI for merchant payments
Cons
- Fuel points stop at 2,500 a statement cycle, which is ₹10,000 of fuel
- No points or surcharge refund on fuel paid by UPI or at non-BPCL pumps
- Base rate of 1 point per ₹100 is worth only 0.25%
- Domestic lounge visits limited to SBI Card's Set A list since 10 January 2026
- 3.5% forex markup and no international lounge access
OCTANE compared with other fuel and everyday cards
Two reviewed cards overlap with OCTANE, and SBI also sells a cheaper fuel sibling.
Kotak Cashback+
The Kotak Cashback+ card costs ₹750 plus GST with a ₹2 lakh waiver. It pays 3% on fuel at any pump and 5% on online food delivery, online grocery and online entertainment, but all three share a cap of 750 points (₹750) per billing cycle. On ₹8,000 of fuel that is ₹240, against ₹500 on OCTANE (2,000 points at ₹0.25). It wins only if you don't use BPCL. Its cashback lapse after 1 year, and from 1 December 2026 the minimum redemption rises from 100 to 500 points.
SimplySAVE SBI Card
The SimplySAVE SBI Card costs ₹499 plus GST with a ₹1 lakh waiver and earns 10 points per ₹150 at restaurants, cinemas, departmental stores and grocery stores, which is 1.67%, up to 5,000 points a month. It earn nothing on fuel. If you hardly drive, it is the cheaper pick for the same categories; if you drive, OCTANE's 2.5% plus fuel points beat it.
BPCL SBI Card
The plain BPCL SBI Card is listed at ₹499 a year, with its renewal fee reversed at ₹1 lakh of spend from 1 May 2026. It earns roughly half of OCTANE's fuel points per ₹100 and half its grocery and dining rate, for about a third of the fee, so it suits BPCL users with small fuel bills. We will review it separately.
