PhonePe SBI Card SELECT BLACK: what it is
PhonePe SBI Card SELECT BLACK is the premium one of SBI Card's two PhonePe cards, built for people who run their monthly bills through the PhonePe app; the PhonePe SBI Card PURPLE at ₹499 is not covered here. It's active and comes on Visa or RuPay, the RuPay one linking to UPI. One catch first: SBI Card's website have no Apply button for it and does not say where to apply.
The point maths is simple because 1 point is worth ₹1. Recharges, utility bills, insurance and travel paid in the PhonePe app earn 10 points per ₹100, a 10% return; online spends elsewhere earn 5%; scan and pay inside PhonePe earns 1% value back; other card spends gets 1%. The monthly caps are what limit it, and they bite sooner than most people expect.
What changed in 2026
- 10 January 2026: the 4 yearly domestic lounge visits work only at lounges on SBI Card's Set A list, 16 in all.
- 1 July 2026: the PhonePe cap was split into 1,500 points a month for non-insurance spends and 500 for insurance, against 2,000 for all PhonePe spends before; the online cap fell from 2,000 to 1,000; and UPI scan and pay or online UPI outside PhonePe stopped earning. Tolls, gifts, jewellery, education, and utilities or insurance paid outside PhonePe was also excluded.
SBI Card's common fees moved as well: 1% on wallet loads above ₹1,000 and on app-paid education from 1 November 2025, new late fee slabs from 1 May 2026, and 1% on big transport and fuel spends from 1 December 2026.
PhonePe SELECT BLACK fees and charges
The joining fee is ₹1,499 and the renewal fee from year two is ₹1,499. The card page shows the joining fee without "+ taxes", but SBI Card's MITC says all fees attract taxes, so plan for GST of ₹269.82 (₹1,499 times 18%) and ₹1,768.82 in total. On joining you get a PhonePe e-gift card worth ₹1,500, which almost cover the fee itself. Add-on cards are free.
The ₹3 lakh reversal
Renewal fee is reversed if you spent ₹3 lakh or more in the previous membership year, ₹25,000 a month (₹3,00,000 divided by 12). A family putting its PhonePe bills, online shopping and weekly groceries on this card can get there, a single person paying only a phone bill will not.
Interest, late fees and cash
Revolving costs 3.75% a month, 45% a year, and the 20 to 50 day interest-free window only work when the last bill was paid in full. Late fees climb from nil (up to ₹100 due) through ₹100, ₹500, ₹750, ₹950 and ₹1,100 to ₹1,300 when more than ₹50,000 is due, and missing the minimum two cycles in a row adds ₹100 a cycle. Cash withdrawals: 2.5%, minimum ₹500, interest from that day.
Charges that matter for bill payers
- Utilities: 1% on the whole amount once a billing cycle's utility payments exceeds ₹50,000, since 1 December 2024. A household paying large electricity bills by PhonePe should watch it.
- Rent: ₹199 plus taxes per payment, and no points.
- Wallet loads above ₹1,000 and education via third-party apps: 1% each.
- From 1 December 2026: 1% on transport transactions above ₹30,000 and on fuel above ₹50,000 a cycle.
- Forex: 3.5%, also on rupee payments of ₹1,000 or more to merchants based overseas.
- Fuel surcharge: 1% waived on ₹500 to ₹4,000 fills, up to ₹250 a statement cycle.

Points, monthly caps and three bill-paying households
The 10-point PhonePe rate covers only recharges, utilities, bill payments, insurance and travel, identified through PhonePe's own merchant lists, so other PhonePe spends do not get it. Each cap fill at a set spend: ₹15,000 for PhonePe bills and travel (1,500 divided by 10%), ₹5,000 for PhonePe insurance (500 divided by 10%), ₹20,000 for other online spends (1,000 divided by 5%) and ₹2,00,000 for the rest (2,000 divided by 1%). Scan and pay inside PhonePe has no separate cap stated. Points come only on transactions of ₹100 or more, which knocks out many small scan-and-pay payments.
Nothing is earned on fuel, wallet loads, rent, school and education fees, government, gaming, tolls, jewellery, gifts and souvenirs, utilities and insurance paid outside PhonePe, UPI outside PhonePe, EMI, Flexipay or cash.
Redeem as statement credit in multiples of 500 points, or for catalogue vouchers. The card's terms say no redemption fee is charged, and PhonePe cards is exempt from SBI Card's April 2026 rule limiting statement credit to multiples of 4,000 points. The product terms don't state an expiry; SBI Card's general MITC rule is 24 months. Moving to this card from another SBI card forfeit the old card's unredeemed points, so redeem those first. Apart from the fee reversal, the only milestone is a ₹5,000 Yatra e-voucher at ₹5 lakh a year.
Light: ₹15,000 a month
₹4,000 of recharges and bills in PhonePe earn 400 points, ₹4,000 of scan and pay in PhonePe ₹40, ₹3,000 online 150, ₹3,000 of other card spends 30, and ₹1,000 of fuel nothing. That's ₹620 a month and ₹7,440 a year. ₹1,80,000 a year (₹15,000 times 12) is short of ₹3 lakh, so after the ₹1,768.82 fee ₹5,671.18 is left (₹7,440 minus ₹1,768.82).
Typical: ₹35,000 a month
₹10,000 of PhonePe bills, recharges and travel (1,000 points), ₹2,000 of insurance in PhonePe (200), ₹8,000 of scan and pay in PhonePe (₹80), ₹8,000 online (400), ₹5,000 elsewhere (50) and ₹2,000 of fuel (nil). Every category stays under its cap, so the month gives ₹1,730 and the year ₹20,760, and ₹4,20,000 of yearly spends (₹35,000 times 12) gets the fee reversed.
Heavy: ₹80,000 a month
₹25,000 of PhonePe bills and travel would earn 2,500 but stops at 1,500, ₹8,000 of PhonePe insurance would earn 800 but stops at 500, and ₹25,000 online would earn 1,250 but stops at 1,000. Add ₹100 from ₹10,000 of scan and pay, 100 points from ₹10,000 of other spends, and nothing on ₹2,000 of fuel. That is 3,200 a month and 38,400 a year, plus the ₹5,000 Yatra voucher because ₹9,60,000 a year (₹80,000 times 12) clears ₹5 lakh: ₹43,400 in all. The caps cost this household 1,550 points a month (1,000 plus 300 plus 250), or ₹18,600 a year, so it should moves spends above the caps to another card.
| Household | Monthly spend | Value a year | Fee from year two |
|---|---|---|---|
| Light | ₹15,000 | ₹7,440 | ₹1,768.82 |
| Typical | ₹35,000 | ₹20,760 | Reversed |
| Heavy | ₹80,000 | ₹43,400 with the Yatra voucher | Reversed |

Eligibility, and the missing apply button
With this card, applying is the hard part. SBI Card's card page has no Apply button, its card finder mark the card as not available online, and SBI Card does not state where to apply for it. We can't point you to an application page; asking SBI Card's helpline on 39 02 02 02 (with your STD code) or an SBI branch is the way to find out.
The usual SBI Card criteria applies. Salaried applicants must be 21 or over, while online applications need the self-employed to be above 25 and retired pensioners above 40. The maximum age shows as 60 on SBI Card's checklist and as 70 in its FAQ. No minimum income is published, only a stable income requirement, and the card finder's "50 to 99K" monthly income filter is a browsing tool, not a cut-off. A credit score between 750 and 900 is preferred.
- PAN, for digital KYC.
- Aadhaar copy with first 8 digits masked, or another government address proof.
- Salary slips or ITR, if SBI Card asks for income proof.
The RBI's 2025 Directions for NBFC card issuers require SBI Card to judge your repayment capacity on its own, give you a Key Fact Statement and explain a rejection in writing. PhonePe, the co-brand partner, cannot see your card transactions and does not approve the card.

Who the PhonePe SELECT BLACK card is for
If PhonePe is where your household pays mobile recharges, electricity, gas, broadband and insurance, this card turns ₹15,000 of those bills into 1,500 points a month, worth ₹1,500, which is about as good as a ₹1,499 card gets. Add some online shopping and in-app scan and pay, cross ₹3 lakh a year, and the fee disappear too.
The caps are the price of that rate. Above ₹15,000 of PhonePe bills or ₹20,000 of other online spends a month, the extra earns nothing extra, and UPI through any app other than PhonePe has earned nothing since 1 July 2026. Travellers get little: 4 domestic lounge visits a year, Priority Pass membership worth USD 99 for two years but no free international visits, and a 3.5% forex markup.
- Gains most: PhonePe-first families with ₹10,000 to ₹15,000 of monthly bills, and moderate online shoppers.
- Should skip: people who pay by UPI on other apps, frequent flyers, and anyone who can't find an application route.
- Heavy bill payers better pair it with a second card for whatever goes above the caps.
Pros
- 10 points per ₹100 on PhonePe recharges, bills, insurance and travel, with 1 point worth ₹1
- 5 points per ₹100 on other online spends
- ₹1,500 PhonePe e-gift card on joining
- Statement credit in multiples of 500 points with no redemption fee
- 1% value back on scan and pay inside the PhonePe app
Cons
- Monthly caps of 1,500 points on PhonePe spends, 500 on insurance and 1,000 online
- UPI outside the PhonePe app earns nothing since 1 July 2026
- No Apply button on SBI Card's website and no stated way to apply
- No points on transactions below ₹100
- 3.5% forex markup and no free international lounge visits
PhonePe SELECT BLACK against other bills and UPI cards
The Airtel Axis Bank card costs ₹500 plus GST, reversed at ₹2,00,000 a year, and is applied for through the Airtel Thanks app. It pays 25% on Airtel mobile, broadband, Wi-Fi and DTH bills and 10% on other utility bills paid in Airtel Thanks, but since 12 April 2026 those are capped at twice and once the 1% base cashback you earn that month, so the high rates need plenty of other spending to work. It has no lounges.
SBI Card's own Tata Neu Infinity SBI Card has the same ₹1,499 fee and ₹3 lakh reversal but treats UPI differently: 1.5% NeuCoins on RuPay UPI with no app condition stated, up to 500 a month, plus 5% on Tata brands, 1.99% forex and more lounges. Its NeuCoins only work inside Tata Neu.
AU SPONT is the budget option: ₹299 plus GST with no published waiver, 1% cashback on every transaction including UPI through any app, capped at ₹500 a statement cycle, and 2 domestic lounge visits a quarter after ₹50,000 of spends in the previous quarter.
