What HDFC Bank’s interest rate card tells you

HDFC Bank quotes a single range for everyone — salaried or self-employed, any loan size: repo plus 2.50% to repo plus 7.95%, which works out to 7.75% to 13.20% today. That 5.45% spread is second only to IndusInd’s among the private banks we track, and HDFC doesn’t publish what places you within it, so the floor tells you little on its own. The same range covers balance transfers, renovation and home extension loans. A transfer from another lender isn’t priced differently on paper, which is exactly why you should ask for your spread over repo in writing and compare that figure.

Its floor puts HDFC Bank joint 22nd out of 48 lenders on our list, and joint 8th among the 19 private banks. Measured against the RBI repo rate of 5.25%, HDFC Bank’s floor carries a spread of 2.50 points. That range isn’t academic: on ₹40 lakh for 20 years it’s the difference between ₹32,838 and ₹47,434 a month.

How to land near the bottom of HDFC Bank’s range

  • Ask HDFC Bank to state your spread over the repo rate as well as your rate. On a range this wide, the spread is what tells you whether you’ve been priced near the bottom.
  • A single published range leaves the placement to the lender, so ask for your rate in writing and ask what would move it lower — a larger down payment, a co-applicant, a salary account.
  • Whatever rate you’re offered, ask for it in writing with the benchmark and the spread shown separately — it’s the only way to know what happens to your EMI when the benchmark next moves.
