Everyday Cashback Credit Cards: Check Your Net Gain After Fees, Not the Headline Rate

A report by chandigarhmetro.com looks at which credit card gives the best cashback on everyday spends in India. We can't check its ranking here, so treat it as a starting point.

The short answer for you: the best cashback card is the one that fits your own spending. Pay the bill in full each month, or interest will wipe out the rewards.

Key takeaways

  • Cashback is a small refund on card spends, usually a few percent at most.
  • A flat rate card suits you if your spends are spread across many shops.
  • Category cards pay more, but only on chosen spends, and often with monthly limits.
  • Annual fees can eat a big part of what you earn.
  • Unpaid bills cost far more than any cashback you earn.

How credit card cashback works

Cashback means the bank gives back a small share of what you spend. It may show up as a statement credit or as reward points. Cards usually work in one of two ways.

A flat card pays the same rate on almost everything. A category card pays a higher rate on chosen spends, like groceries, fuel or online orders. Many cards also cap the monthly cashback, so read the fine print. Some spends, like fuel, rent and wallet top-ups, often earn less or nothing.

What cashback is worth in rupees

Say you spend ₹20,000 a month on a card. Here's how three styles of cards could look. These rates are examples, not offers from any bank.

Card style Rate Monthly cashback on ₹20,000
Basic flat card 1% on everything ₹200
Better flat card 1.5% on everything ₹300
Category card 5% on ₹8,000 online, 1% on ₹12,000 ₹520 if there's no cap

Now count the fee. A 1.5% card earns ₹300 a month, or ₹3,600 a year. If the fee is ₹1,000 plus 18% GST, you pay ₹1,180. Your net gain is ₹2,420.

Now think about the risk. Card interest is often around 3.5% a month, which is about 42% a year. Leave ₹20,000 unpaid for one month and you may pay ₹700. That's more than a whole month of cashback.

Who gains the most from a cashback card

Salaried people with steady online and bill spends often gain the most. Families who pay for groceries, fuel and school fees on a card can gain too. Check your eligibility before you apply, since many applications in a short time can hurt your credit score.

If you carry a balance from month to month, cashback won't help you. Look at interest rates first and clear that debt.

What to do now

You don't need to rush into a new card. Work through this short checklist first.

  1. Add up your card spends for the last three months.
  2. Note how much goes to online orders, groceries, fuel and bills.
  3. Check which spends the card leaves out.
  4. Work out the yearly fee and its GST.
  5. Pick the card with the best net gain, not the biggest headline rate.

If you plan to turn big buys into EMIs, try the EMI calculator first. Card EMIs often carry extra interest and fees.

Frequently asked questions

Is a flat cashback card better than a category card?

It depends on your spends. Flat cards are simple. Category cards win only if most of your money goes to the bonus categories.

Can I earn cashback if I don't pay the full bill?

You can, but it rarely helps. The interest on the unpaid amount is usually higher than the cashback.

Does the annual fee matter?

Yes. Subtract the fee and GST from your yearly cashback. Some cards waive the fee if you spend a set amount in a year.

BankCreds analysis

What this means for you

The headline asks for one best card. There isn't one. The gap between a good card and a great one is small. On ₹20,000 of monthly spends, the gap between 1.5% and 2% is just ₹100 a month.

The bigger gap is between people who pay in full and people who don't. A household that spends ₹30,000 a month at 1.5% earns ₹450. Carrying even ₹15,000 unpaid for a month costs about ₹525 in interest. That wipes out the reward.

This week, don't chase a new card. Check what your current card pays and what it leaves out. Switch only if your yearly net gain rises by a few thousand rupees. Don't over-read any ranking list. Rates and caps change often, so check the bank's own page before you apply.
