IRCTC SBI Card Premier vs IRCTC HDFC Bank Card: Which Rail Card Wins?
Choose the IRCTC SBI Card Premier if you book AC trains on the IRCTC app most months: it pays 10 Reward Points per ₹100 on those tickets with no cap, at ₹1 a point. The IRCTC HDFC Bank Credit Card costs ₹500 instead of ₹1,499 (both plus GST) and pays 5 points per ₹100 on train tickets up to 1,000 points a month, so it wins for light rail users and for anyone who books on SmartBuy, where HDFC adds 5% cashback.
In short
SBI's Premier pays more for regular AC travellers who book on the IRCTC app, while HDFC's IRCTC card returns more for light rail users and, booked through SmartBuy, keeps pace with SBI until its caps fill at about ₹20,000 of tickets a month.
Best for
- SBI Premier: families who book AC classes or chair car on the IRCTC app every month
- HDFC IRCTC: occasional rail users who want a ₹500 card with a ₹1.5 lakh waiver
- HDFC IRCTC: people willing to book train tickets on SmartBuy for the extra 5% cashback
Skip it if
- You mostly fly, since neither card lists an airport lounge and both charge a 3.5% forex markup
- You want points you can spend anywhere, because HDFC's points pay only for train tickets on SmartBuy
- You book tickets for relatives without travelling, since SBI pays only when the cardholder is a passenger
Highlights
- SBI Premier: 10 Reward Points per ₹100 on AC and chair car tickets, no cap
- HDFC IRCTC: 5 points per ₹100 on train tickets, capped at 1,000 a month
- Fees: ₹1,499 against ₹500, plus GST, waived at ₹2 lakh and ₹1.5 lakh of yearly spends
- Both: 8 railway lounge visits a year and a 3.5% forex markup

Two IRCTC cards built for two kinds of rail habit
Both cards are meant for people who books trains through IRCTC, and on paper they look alike: 8 railway lounge visits a year, a fuel surcharge waiver, a 3.5% forex markup. They part ways on how hard each one reward a ticket and how much it costs to keep.
SBI Card's Premier charges ₹1,499 plus GST and pays 10 Reward Points per ₹100 on AC1, AC2, AC3, Executive Chair Car and Chair Car tickets bought on the IRCTC website or app, with no monthly or yearly cap. HDFC's card charges ₹500 plus GST and pays 5 points per ₹100 on train tickets from the IRCTC website, Rail Connect or SmartBuy, but those 5X points stops at 1,000 a month.
Who each card suits
- SBI Premier: a household putting ₹5,000 or more a month on AC tickets, that eats out now and then and can cross ₹2 lakh of yearly spends so the renewal fee is reversed.
- HDFC IRCTC: someone who takes a train every few weeks, or who don't mind booking on SmartBuy, where 5% cashback is paid over and above the points.
The short verdict
For steady AC travel booked on the IRCTC app, SBI earns twice as much per ticket and keeps earning after HDFC's cap is full. For light rail users, HDFC's lower fee and its ₹500 quarterly voucher makes it the better buy, even though its points can only go back into train tickets.
Both cards are taking applications as of 5 November 2026. The change worth knowing are on the SBI side, where the free ₹50 lakh air accident and ₹10 lakh rail accident covers ended on 26 July 2025.
What each card costs to hold
SBI's card has a joining fee and an annual fee of ₹1,499 each, plus GST. With 18% GST that is ₹1,768.82 a year (₹1,499 plus ₹269.82). The MITC reverses the renewal when you spend ₹2 lakh or more in the preceding year, about ₹16,667 a month (₹2,00,000 divided by 12). The card page's fee section leaves the waiver out, but the MITC and the same page's benefits list both carry it, so we has gone with the MITC.
HDFC's card is ₹500 plus GST to join, billed on the 45th day after the card is issued, and ₹500 plus GST to renew, so ₹590 with tax. Spend ₹1.5 lakh in the year before your renewal date and the renewal fee is waived. That is ₹12,500 a month (₹1,50,000 divided by 12).
Add-on cards cost nothing on either. In year one, SBI credits 1,500 Reward Points, stated worth ₹1,500, once the first annual fee is paid, which take most of the sting out of ₹1,768.82. HDFC's product page talks about a ₹500 gift voucher on activation, but the terms limit it to lifetime-free cards issued from 1 October to 31 December 2025, so a new applicant should not plan on it.
Charges side by side
| Charge | IRCTC SBI Card Premier | IRCTC HDFC Bank |
|---|---|---|
| Interest | 3.75% a month, 45% a year | 3.75% a month, 45% a year |
| Late fee, top slab | ₹1,300 above ₹50,000 due | ₹1,300 on a bill above ₹50,000 |
| Cash withdrawal | 2.5%, minimum ₹500 | 2.5% or ₹500, whichever is higher |
| Rent payments | ₹199 plus taxes per transaction | 1%, capped at ₹4,999 per transaction |
| Wallet loads | 1% of each load above ₹1,000 | 1% once loads pass ₹10,000 in a month |
| Forex markup | 3.5% | 3.5% |
From 1 December 2026 SBI Card charges 1% on every transport transaction above ₹30,000 (merchant codes 4111, 4784 and 4131) and 1% on all fuel in a cycle once fuel crosses ₹50,000. Paying late on either card cost up to ₹1,300 plus GST. HDFC's MITC charges 1% plus GST on railway tickets bought with any HDFC card other than this one, so for an HDFC customer it's the card to keep for train bookings.
How the points add up
SBI's Premier earns 10 points per ₹100 on AC and chair car tickets from the IRCTC website and app, which is 10% at ₹1 a point. Points are calculated on the base fare of the booking including co-travellers, but SBI pays them only when the cardholder is a passenger on that ticket. Air tickets on IRCTC's air site and IRCTC e-catering earn 5 points per ₹125. The card page says 5% back, though by SBI's own terms it is 4% (5 divided by 125), and air earning is capped at 750 points a statement cycle.
Dining and standing instructions on utility bills get 3 points per ₹125 (2.4%), other retail 1 point per ₹125 (0.8%). Points moves to your IRCTC loyalty account on the 15th of every month, and SBI Card does not publish what they fetch there beyond the ₹1 conversion in its terms. Fuel, wallet loads, rent (since 15 April 2024) and government payments (since 15 July 2024) earns nothing.
HDFC's card pays 5 points per ₹100 on train tickets booked on the IRCTC website, Rail Connect or SmartBuy. Its terms cap those 5X points at 1,000 a month and 12,000 a year, so the full rate holds till about ₹20,000 of tickets a month (1,000 points divided by 5 points per ₹100). Book the same ticket on SmartBuy and HDFC adds 5% cashback, capped at ₹1,000 a month. All other spends earns 1 point per ₹100, up to 1,000 points a month.
The catch is what HDFC's points can buy. They're worth ₹1 only through Points + Pay on train tickets at SmartBuy, for up to 70% of a fare, and each redemption costs ₹99 plus 18% GST, so ₹116.82. They can't be taken as statement cashback.
Three rail travellers, both cards
A point is ₹1 on both cards, ticket amounts are treated as base fare, and this is year two, when each renewal is waived or charged. HDFC's ₹500 voucher needs ₹30,000 in a calendar quarter, which all three profile reach (₹10,000 times 3).
| Per year | Light: ₹10,000 a month | Typical: ₹25,000 a month | Heavy: ₹60,000 a month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly split | ₹2,000 AC tickets, ₹8,000 other | ₹5,000 AC tickets, ₹2,000 dining, ₹18,000 other | ₹24,000 AC tickets, ₹4,000 dining, ₹3,000 IRCTC air, ₹29,000 other |
| SBI points a month | 264 | 692 | 2,848 |
| SBI renewal fee | ₹1,768.82 | Waived | Waived |
| SBI net value | ₹1,399.18 | ₹8,304 | ₹34,176 |
| HDFC points a month | 180 | 450 | 1,360 |
| HDFC quarterly vouchers | ₹2,000 | ₹2,000 | ₹2,000 |
| HDFC renewal fee | ₹590 | Waived | Waived |
| HDFC net, booked on IRCTC | ₹3,570 | ₹7,400 | ₹18,320 |
| HDFC net, booked on SmartBuy | ₹4,770 | ₹10,400 | ₹30,320 |
- Light: SBI earns 200 points on tickets (₹2,000 at 10 per ₹100) and 64 on the rest (₹8,000 divided by 125), so 264 a month and 3,168 a year. Yearly spends of ₹1.2 lakh (₹10,000 times 12) miss the ₹2 lakh waiver, and ₹3,168 minus ₹1,768.82 leave ₹1,399.18. HDFC earns 100 plus 80, so 180 a month or 2,160 a year, plus ₹2,000 of vouchers, less ₹590: ₹3,570. On SmartBuy, 5% of ₹2,000 adds ₹100 a month, ₹1,200 a year, for ₹4,770.
- Typical: SBI gives 500 on tickets (₹5,000 at 10 per ₹100), 48 on dining (₹2,000 at 3 per ₹125) and 144 on the rest (₹18,000 divided by 125), which is 692 a month and 8,304 a year, with the fee waived at ₹3 lakh (₹25,000 times 12). HDFC gives 250 plus 200 (₹20,000 at 1 per ₹100), so 450 a month or 5,400 a year, plus ₹2,000 of vouchers: ₹7,400. SmartBuy's 5% of ₹5,000 is ₹250 a month, ₹3,000 a year, taking it to ₹10,400.
- Heavy: SBI gives 2,400 on tickets (₹24,000 at 10 per ₹100), 96 on dining (₹4,000 at 3 per ₹125), 120 on IRCTC air (₹3,000 at 5 per ₹125, well under the 750 cap) and 232 on the rest (₹29,000 divided by 125): 2,848 a month, 34,176 a year. HDFC hits the 1,000-point rail cap, since ₹24,000 at 5 per ₹100 would be 1,200, and earn 360 on the other ₹36,000 (₹3,000 plus ₹4,000 plus ₹29,000), so 1,360 a month and 16,320 a year, plus ₹2,000 of vouchers: ₹18,320. SmartBuy's 5% of ₹24,000 would be ₹1,200 but is capped at ₹1,000, adding ₹12,000 a year for ₹30,320.
So HDFC take the light case, and the typical one too on SmartBuy, while SBI pulls away once tickets run past HDFC's caps. Knock ₹116.82 off HDFC's figure per redemption. SBI's travel milestones (2,500 points at ₹50,000 of travel spends a year, 5,000 at ₹1 lakh) could add more, but the codes counted as travel sit in a document we have not read, so we left them out.
Lounges, IRCTC charges, fuel and forex
Lounge access is a tie on the count: 8 complimentary railway lounge visits a year on each, no more than 2 in a quarter, and no airport lounge on either. SBI's visits are for the primary cardholder only. HDFC's IRCTC Executive Lounge visits include supplementary cardholders, but you show the card with a valid train ticket and pay a ₹2 validation charge.
Both cards take care of IRCTC's own convenience charge. SBI says the Premier saves the 1% transaction charge on railway tickets and 1.8% on air tickets booked through IRCTC. HDFC reverses the 1% IRCTC charge on bookings made on the IRCTC website or app, Rail Connect or SmartBuy, up to ₹1,000 a month, a limit only a ₹1 lakh month of tickets would touches (1% of ₹1,00,000).
The fuel waiver is 1% on both, capped at ₹250 per statement cycle. SBI's applies to fills of ₹500 to ₹4,000 at any petrol pump in India, HDFC's to fills of ₹400 to ₹5,000, and fuel earns no points on either card.
Abroad, both add a 3.5% markup, so ₹10,000 spent overseas cost ₹350 more on either one.
Insurance, welcome and milestones
- Insurance: SBI keeps a fraud liability cover of ₹1 lakh, but its ₹50 lakh air accident and ₹10 lakh rail accident covers were discontinued from 26 July 2025. We found no insurance listed for the HDFC card, something to keep in the mind if you travel a lot.
- Welcome: SBI credits 1,500 points within 45 days of the first annual fee. HDFC's activation voucher is limited by its terms to lifetime-free cards issued 1 October to 31 December 2025.
- Milestones: SBI gives 2,500 points on ₹50,000 of travel spends in a year and 5,000 on ₹1 lakh. HDFC gives a ₹500 gift voucher in every calendar quarter you spend ₹30,000 or more, so up to ₹2,000 a year (4 quarters times ₹500).
On UPI, SBI's card comes in Visa and RuPay versions and the RuPay one works on UPI. HDFC hasn't stated its card's network; its terms cap UPI points at 500 a month, which hints at RuPay, but until the bank say so, don't pick it for UPI.
Who can apply for each
HDFC is the one that put numbers on paper. Salaried applicants must be 21 to 60 years old with a monthly income of ₹12,000, self-employed applicants 21 to 65 with an annual ITR above ₹6 lakh, and both must be Indian nationals. For a first card that floor is quite reachable.
SBI Card publishes no minimum income for this card, or for any of its cards. Its listing page asks salaried applicants to be 21 or older and gives the maximum age as 60 in one place and 70 in another, so we show both. Self-employed people must be above 25, retired pensioners above 40 can apply, and SBI prefers a credit score of 750 to 900. Its card finder files the Premier under a monthly income of 50 to 99K, but that is a browsing filter and not a eligibility rule.
| Rule | IRCTC SBI Card Premier | IRCTC HDFC Bank |
|---|---|---|
| Age, salaried | 21 and above; maximum 60 or 70 (SBI states both) | 21 to 60 |
| Age, self-employed | Above 25 | 21 to 65 |
| Income | Not published | ₹12,000 a month salaried; ITR above ₹6 lakh self-employed |
| Credit score | Preferably 750 to 900 | Not published |
| Documents | PAN, masked Aadhaar or other address proof, income proof if asked | Identity, address and income proof |
| How to apply | Online, chatbot ILA, helpline or SBI branch | Online or at an HDFC Bank branch |
Existing HDFC customers may not need to submit documents again. Whatever the published rule says, approval is the bank's decision: RBI requires every issuer to assess your independent financial means, and if it turns you down it must give you the specific reasons in writing. If your credit file is thin or empty, our guide on getting a card with no credit history walk through the realistic routes.
Which IRCTC card should you pick?
- You book AC tickets on the IRCTC app most months and spend ₹2 lakh a year: go with SBI's Premier. At ₹5,000 of tickets a month it earns 500 points against HDFC's 250, and there is no ceiling to hit.
- Your rail spend is small or comes in bursts: HDFC's ₹590 fee with GST and its ₹500 quarterly voucher make it the cheaper card to owning, and the ₹1.5 lakh waiver is easier to clear.
- You are fine booking on SmartBuy: HDFC's 5 points plus 5% cashback matches SBI's 10% until about ₹20,000 of tickets a month, after that SBI moves ahead.
- You travel in sleeper class: SBI's 10% list names only AC classes and chair car, while HDFC's rail rate names no class, so HDFC is the safer pick.
When neither card fits
If you mostly fly or spend abroad, neither give you much: 3.5% on foreign spends and no airport lounge. A flight-focused card like the MakeMyTrip ICICI Bank card or the Standard Chartered EaseMyTrip card will serve you better, and our list of the best travel credit cards lines up more options.
Each card has its own full review: the IRCTC SBI Card Premier review and the IRCTC HDFC Bank card review. For the rest of each lineup, browse SBI Card's credit cards and HDFC Bank's credit cards, or go back to the credit cards section to compare other banks.
