What the Zen Signature card does
Zen Signature is Kotak Mahindra Bank's shopping rewards card, the one Kotak's own card listing simply call Zen. It pays double points on clothes, lifestyle goods, department stores and jewellery, picked out by merchant category code, and normal points on most other spends. The fee is ₹1,500 plus GST a year, and the annual fee goes away when your retail spends crosses ₹1.5 lakh in the year.
The points that matter most, in short:
- Earn: 10 Zen Points per ₹150 on those shopping categories is worth ₹2.50 in the catalogue (10 times ₹0.25), or 1.67%. The 5-point rate on other spends works out to 0.83%.
- Caps: every point in a statement cycle, base and bonus together, stops at 6,500. Education, insurance, utilities and government bills earn only up to set limits.
- Milestones: 7,500 bonus points at ₹3 lakh of yearly spends and another 7,500 at ₹6 lakh, but excluded and capped categories are not count towards them.
- Travel: 3 Priority Pass visits a year outside India, and 2 domestic lounge visits in a quarter after you spend ₹75,000 in the one before.
Status, and the June 2025 rewrite
The card is active and taking applications. Kotak couldn't issue any new credit cards for some months: the RBI stopped it on 24 April 2024 over IT shortcomings and lifted the order on 12 February 2025. The network isn't stated on the card page, though the name suggest a Signature-tier card.
Most of today's rules dates from 1 June 2025, when Kotak:
- cut the cashback value of a Zen Point from ₹0.25 to ₹0.20, with a 2,000-point minimum;
- stopped points on wallet loads, fuel, rent and online gaming, and limited points to ₹70,000 a cycle on education and insurance, ₹50,000 on utilities and ₹40,000 on government payments;
- tied domestic lounge visits to ₹75,000 of spend in a calendar quarter;
- narrowed the fuel surcharge waiver to fills of ₹500 to ₹5,000, at most ₹3,500 in a year.
Zen Signature fees in rupees
The joining fee and annual fee are ₹1,500 each, and GST is extra. At 18% that is ₹270 more, so ₹1,770 leave your account each time a fee is billed (₹1,500 plus ₹270). Add-on cards carry no fee.
Getting the annual fee waived
Kotak waives the annual fee on ₹1,50,000 of retail spends in a year, which is ₹12,500 a month (₹1,50,000 divided by 12). A household that run groceries, shopping and bills through one card usually gets there; someone using Zen only for a few clothes purchases won't. The waiver wording says only retail spends, so to be safe keep fuel, rent and wallet loads out of your own count.
The welcome gift is 1,500 Zen Points, and it comes only after you pay the ₹1,500 joining fee. Kotak says the free version of the card don't get it. At ₹0.25 a point that's ₹375 back against a ₹1,770 joining cost.
Interest, late fee and cash
Interest is 3.75% a month, 45% a year, per the Key Fact Statement, and GST at 18% is charged on interest and on cash advance fees. The interest-free period runs up to 51 days, but only if the previous bill was cleared. A ₹30,000 balance carried for 30 days costs about ₹1,110 in interest (₹30,000 times 45% times 30 divided by 365) and about ₹200 of GST on that.
The late fee is set by the amount due and applies when you pay nothing or less than the minimum: nil up to ₹100, rising to ₹1,300 once dues pass ₹50,000. A ₹7,000 due, for example, attracts ₹750. Cash advances charge 2.5% with a ₹500 minimum, so withdrawing ₹15,000 cost ₹500 and not ₹375, with interest from that day. Going over limit by ₹500 or more costs ₹500.
Category fees and forex
- Rent (MCC 6513): 1% of each payment plus GST.
- Utilities above ₹50,000, fuel above ₹35,000, and wallet loads or online skill gaming above ₹10,000 each in a statement cycle: 1%.
- Education through third-party apps: 1% on the whole amount.
- Forex markup and dynamic currency conversion: 3.5% each. A ₹25,000 hotel bill abroad adds ₹875 (3.5% of ₹25,000) before GST.
- Railway surcharge waiver of 1.8% online or 2.5% at the counter, up to ₹500 in a anniversary year, even though railway spends earn no points.
- Card replacement ₹100. Kotak publishes no redemption fee for Zen.

Zen Points: earning, value and caps
Points are counted per ₹150, and only whole multiples count. A ₹1,000 kurta earns on ₹900, six lots of ₹150, so 60 points, and the last ₹100 earn nothing. Small bills under ₹150 gets no points at all.
- 10 Zen Points per ₹150 on apparel, lifestyle goods, department stores and jewellery, by MCC.
- 5 Zen Points per ₹150 on other eligible spends.
- No points on wallet loading, fuel, rent, online skill gaming, railways, EMI transactions or balance transfers.
- Education and insurance earn only on the first ₹70,000 of a cycle, utilities on ₹50,000 and government on ₹40,000.
The 6,500 cap covers every point in a cycle. Most people never come close, you need ₹97,500 of shopping in one cycle (650 lots of ₹150 at 10 points) to reach it from shopping alone. It bites on large one-off buys: ₹1,50,000 of jewellery in a wedding month would earn 10,000 points on paper (1,000 lots times 10), yet you get 6,500, worth ₹1,625 in the catalogue.
What a Zen Point is worth
There is two routes. The Kotak Rewards catalogue, which have merchandise, vouchers and mobile recharges, values a point at ₹0.25. Cashback gives ₹0.20 since 1 June 2025, with a 2,000-point minimum. So the 10-point rate is 1.67% in the catalogue or 1.33% as cashback (₹2 on ₹150), and the 5-point rate is 0.83% (₹1.25 on ₹150) or 0.67% (₹1 on ₹150). Points expire two years after they're earned, so better you redeem them in time.
Welcome and milestone points
The paid card brings 1,500 welcome points, worth ₹375. After that, 7,500 bonus points come at ₹3,00,000 of yearly spends, about ₹25,000 a month, and another 7,500 at ₹6,00,000, about ₹50,000 a month. Each bonus is ₹1,875 in the catalogue (7,500 times ₹0.25). Fuel and utility bills won't help reach either one, because excluded and capped categories is left out of the milestone count.
Three worked examples
We assume each bill is a multiple of ₹150 and value points at the ₹0.25 catalogue rate. Utility bills earn points but don't count for milestones.
| Spender | Monthly split | Points a cycle | Points a year | Catalogue value | Annual fee |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Light, ₹12,000 | Apparel ₹3,000, groceries ₹4,500, dining ₹1,500, bills ₹1,500, fuel ₹1,500 | 450 | 5,400 | ₹1,350 | ₹1,770, not waived |
| Typical, ₹30,000 | Apparel and lifestyle ₹7,500, groceries ₹9,000, dining ₹4,500, bills ₹3,000, other ₹3,000, fuel ₹3,000 | 1,150 | 13,800 | ₹3,450 | Waived |
| Heavy, ₹70,000 | Apparel, lifestyle and jewellery ₹24,000, groceries ₹12,000, flights and hotels ₹12,000, dining ₹9,000, other ₹7,500, bills ₹3,000, fuel ₹2,500 | 3,050 | 51,600 with milestones | ₹12,900 | Waived |
Light: apparel is 20 lots at 10 points, 200, and groceries, dining and bills are 50 lots at 5, 250, so 450 a cycle and 5,400 a year (450 times 12), ₹1,350. The year's spend is ₹1,44,000 (₹12,000 times 12), ₹6,000 short of the waiver. Year one nets minus ₹45 (₹1,350 plus ₹375 welcome, less ₹1,770), and later years minus ₹420 (₹1,350 less ₹1,770).
Typical: 50 lots of shopping at 10 points give 500, and 130 lots of the rest (₹19,500 divided by ₹150) at 5 give 650, so 1,150 a cycle and 13,800 a year, ₹3,450. Fee is waived for this spender. The milestone just slip away: without fuel and bills the year counts ₹2,88,000 (₹24,000 times 12), ₹12,000 below ₹3 lakh. Year one comes to ₹2,055 (₹3,450 plus ₹375, less ₹1,770), and ₹3,450 from year two.
Heavy: 160 shopping lots (₹24,000 divided by ₹150) give 1,600 and 290 other lots (₹43,500 divided by ₹150) give 1,450, so 3,050 a cycle, well under the cap, and 36,600 a year. Milestone spends are ₹7,74,000 (₹64,500 times 12), so both bonuses add 15,000, for 51,600 points: ₹12,900 in the catalogue or ₹10,320 as cashback. That's about 1.54% (₹12,900 divided by ₹8,40,000). The fee is waived; in year one, after the ₹1,770 joining fee and the ₹375 welcome points, the value is ₹11,505.

Applying for the Zen Signature card
Kotak doesn't publish age or income rules on the Zen Signature card page, and we won't guess at them. What it does list is the paperworks it expects to see:
- Identity proof, age proof and address proof.
- Income proof or employment details.
- Your PAN card.
For the online route, you pick the card on Kotak's website, give your name, phone number, PAN and Aadhaar, complete Video KYC, and a virtual card is issue to you. Kotak also accepts applications at its branches and through bank representatives.
What Kotak will weigh
RBI's 2025 card Directions makes the bank assess your independent financial means and count the limits you hold with other lenders. The RBI sets no minimum income or age; issuers do, and Kotak hasn't published them for this card. A CRIF score above 700 or an Experian score above 750 is generally seen as good, both on a 300 to 900 scale. If you're turned down, Kotak must give the specific reasons in writing. Only the bank decides, and no one can promise approval.
A few protections are worth knowing when you apply. A card can be issued only with your explicit consent, it can't be reported to the credit bureaus before you activate it, and if you don't activate it within 30 days of issue, the bank have to seek your OTP consent and, without it, close the account free of cost. Who should carry the Zen Signature
Zen makes sense for people whose month includes regular buying at clothing shops, malls, department stores or jewellers, and who run enough through it to clear ₹1.5 lakh a year. At ₹25,000 a month or more you also come close to the first milestone, and around ₹50,000 you can collect both. The 3 Priority Pass visits are a real extra for someone flying abroad once a year, although 3.5% forex take some shine off the trip spends.
Skip it if you'd use it lightly. Below ₹12,500 a month you pay ₹1,770 every year, and our light example shows the points don't cover it. It's also a poor fit for fuel, which earns nothing, and for rent and wallet loads, which earn nothing and draw fees too.
Trade-offs to weigh
Cashback at ₹0.20 trails the catalogue at ₹0.25, so you get the best value only when a voucher or product from the catalogue suit you. The cycle cap rarely matters, but it does in a big jewellery month. The domestic lounge needs ₹75,000 a quarter and Kotak doesn't say whether bills count, so don't plan a trip around it. Insurance covers isn't published for this card.
Pros
- Annual fee waived on ₹1.5 lakh of retail spends, about ₹12,500 a month
- 10 Zen Points per ₹150 on apparel, lifestyle, department stores and jewellery, worth 1.67% in the catalogue
- 5 points per ₹150 on other eligible spends, about 0.83% at catalogue value
- Two milestones of 7,500 bonus points at ₹3 lakh and ₹6 lakh of yearly spends
- 3 complimentary Priority Pass visits a year outside India
- Free add-on cards
Cons
- ₹1,500 + GST fee, ₹1,770 in all, if spends fall short of ₹1.5 lakh
- Cashback value cut to ₹0.20 a point from 1 June 2025
- All points capped at 6,500 per statement cycle
- No points on fuel, rent, wallets, online gaming or railways
- 3.5% forex markup and a 3.5% dynamic currency conversion fee
- Domestic lounge visits need ₹75,000 of spend in the previous quarter
Zen Signature against other shopping reward cards
Each of these three suit a slightly different shopper. The table below sets out the fees and rates; here is the practical difference.
Zen Signature or Kotak League Platinum
League Platinum costs ₹499 plus GST, waived at ₹50,000 of retail spends, against Zen's ₹1,500. It gives 4 points per ₹150, and 8 on department stores, durable goods, travel and on everything after ₹2 lakh in a card year. But a League point is only ₹0.10 in the catalogue and ₹0.07 as cash, so even 8 points is about 0.53% (₹0.80 on ₹150), while Zen's 10 points at ₹0.25 is 1.67%. League adds PVR tickets on ₹1,25,000 of half-yearly spends, Zen adds lounges. Once you clear Zen's ₹12,500 a month waiver level, Zen pays more better.
Zen Signature or SBI SimplySAVE
SimplySAVE SBI Card charges ₹499 plus taxes, reversed on ₹1 lakh of spends in the previous year. It pays 10 points per ₹150 on dining, movies, department stores and groceries, each worth ₹0.25 as statement credit, so 1.67%, capped at 5,000 points a month; other spends get just 1 point, about 0.17%. At department stores both card earns the same. SimplySAVE is cheaper and better for groceries and eating out; Zen is better for apparel and jewellery and pays 5 points on the rest.
Zen Signature or Reliance SBI Card PRIME
Reliance SBI Card PRIME costs ₹2,999 plus taxes, reversed at ₹3 lakh of spends. It gives 20 points per ₹100 on AJIO and JioMart and 10 at other Reliance Retail stores, but the points turn only into Reliance Retail vouchers, at ₹0.25. If your shopping happen mostly inside Reliance stores, it pays more. If it's spread over many brands and jewellers, Zen's rate across the whole category is the more flexible deal.
