HDFC Regalia Gold vs Axis Bank Select Credit Card: Points, Lounges, Fees
HDFC Bank Regalia Gold returns more on the same spending for most people who qualify: 5 Reward Points per ₹200, worth up to ₹0.65 each, is about 1.6% back against about 1% on Axis Bank Select, and its fee waiver needs ₹4 lakh a year instead of ₹8 lakh. Axis Select is far easier to get, with a ₹6 lakh yearly income bar against HDFC's ₹1.5 lakh a month, and its BigBasket and Swiggy offers can be worth more than its points.
In short
Regalia Gold is the stronger rewards and travel card if you clear HDFC's ₹1.5 lakh monthly income bar and redeem on its Gold Catalogue or flights; Axis Select is the realistic choice below that bar and pays back best through its grocery and food delivery offers.
Best for
- Earners above ₹1.5 lakh a month who travel abroad and redeem points on the catalogue or flights (Regalia Gold)
- Families that buy groceries on BigBasket and order on Swiggy every month (Axis Select)
- Applicants with ₹6 lakh or more of yearly income who miss HDFC's bar (Axis Select)
Skip it if
- You want simple cashback, since both pay in points whose value depends on how you redeem
- Fuel or rent is your biggest spend; neither card rewards either
- You spend under ₹4 lakh a year, so neither annual fee is waived
Highlights
- Fees: ₹2,500 + GST (Regalia Gold) and ₹3,000 + GST (Axis Select)
- Fee waivers: ₹4 lakh against ₹8 lakh of yearly spends
- Base earn: 5 points per ₹200 worth up to ₹0.65 each, against 10 points per ₹200 at ₹0.20
- Forex markup: 2% against 3.5%
- Income bar: above ₹1.5 lakh gross a month against ₹6 lakh net a year

Two mid-premium cards with very different entry bars
The HDFC Bank Regalia Gold Credit Card and the Axis Bank Select Credit Card sits in the same price band, ₹2,500 and ₹3,000 a year before GST, and both promise points, lounges and some lifestyle extras. Underneath they are built for different people. Regalia Gold is a travel-leaning rewards card for high earners, while Axis Select is an everyday card for the grocery and food-delivery household, with Priority Pass on top.
Who each card is for
Regalia Gold fits someone earning above ₹1.5 lakh a month gross, spending ₹4 lakh or more a year, flying abroad once or twice and happy to redeem on HDFC's Gold Catalogue or on flights and hotels. For that person it give better value on nearly every rupee, plus a 2% forex markup.
Axis Select fits a salaried or self-employed person with ₹6 lakh or more of yearly income, a big monthly grocery bill and regular Swiggy orders. Its points are thin, but its BigBasket and Swiggy discounts, used every month, is worth more than the points.
Verdict in two sentences
If you qualify for Regalia Gold and redeem with care, it beats Axis Select on rewards, on the fee waiver and on foreign spends. If you don't clear HDFC's income bar, or your money mostly goes on groceries and food delivery, Axis Select is the sensible card and its offers does the heavy lifting.
Recent changes
- Regalia Gold: base earn moved to 5 points per ₹200 on 15 May 2026 (from 4 per ₹150) and Boarding Edge was added the same day. From the quarter starting 1 July 2026, domestic lounge access is 3 visits a quarter on ₹60,000 of spends in the previous quarter. Points taken as cashback have been worth 15 paise since 1 November 2025.
- Axis Select: Priority Pass stopped working at Indian domestic lounges from 28 August 2026; from 1 October 2026 excluded categories no longer count toward the ₹3 lakh threshold for extra benefits; the District movie offer needs ₹25,000 of spends in the previous 3 months from 1 November 2026; and from 15 November 2026 linked memberships renew only with your explicit consent.
Both cards are active and open to new applicants.
Fees and charges side by side
| Charge | HDFC Regalia Gold | Axis Bank Select |
|---|---|---|
| Joining fee | ₹2,500 + GST | ₹3,000 + GST (nil for Burgundy account holders) |
| Annual fee | ₹2,500 + GST | ₹3,000 + GST |
| Fee waiver | ₹4 lakh of retail spends in the anniversary year | ₹8 lakh of eligible spends in the preceding card year |
| Add-on card | Free | Free |
| Interest | 3.75% a month, 45% a year | 3.75% a month, 55.55% a year |
| Forex markup | 2% | 3.5% |
| Rupee payments abroad | 1.75% | 3.5% |
| Redemption fee | ₹99 + GST per catalogue request, ₹50 + GST per cashback request | ₹99 per redemption, ₹199 per transfer to a partner programme |
With GST, Regalia Gold costs ₹2,950 a year (₹2,500 plus ₹450) and Axis Select ₹3,540 (₹3,000 plus ₹540). The waivers matter more than the sticker. HDFC wants ₹4 lakh of retail spends in your anniversary year, about ₹33,333 a month (₹4,00,000 divided by 12). Axis wants double, ₹8 lakh or about ₹66,667 a month, and it leaves out insurance, rent, fuel, education, utilities and telecom, government, wallet, gold and gift card spends when counting. Burgundy account holders pay no Select fee, though ₹3,000 plus GST comes back if the Burgundy status end.
Interest and late fees
Both charge 3.75% a month; Axis states it as 55.55% a year and HDFC as 45%. HDFC's late fee is ₹600 on a ₹1,001 to ₹5,000 bill, ₹900 up to ₹25,000 and ₹1,300 above ₹50,000. Axis charges ₹500 for ₹501 to ₹5,000, ₹1,200 for ₹10,001 to ₹50,000 and ₹1,300 above that, plus ₹100 every cycle after the minimum is missed twice in a row. HDFC levy its late fee only after 3 grace days past the due date.
Special fees
HDFC charges 1% on rent (capped at ₹4,999 per transaction), on a single fuel transaction above ₹15,000, on utilities above ₹50,000 a month, on wallet loads and gaming above ₹10,000 a month and on education paid through third-party apps, and 1% plus GST on railway tickets. Axis charges 1% on every rent payment and on app-paid education, on utilities from ₹25,000 a cycle, on wallet loads and gaming from ₹10,000 and on fuel from ₹50,000. A ₹40,000 rent payment cost ₹400 on either card (1% of ₹40,000), with no points coming back.
Rewards: what a point is worth decides everything
How each card earns
- Regalia Gold: 5 Reward Points per ₹200 on eligible retail spends since 15 May 2026, with a ₹200 minimum for each transactions. Myntra, Nykaa, Reliance Digital and Marks & Spencer earn 5X, the bonus capped at 5,000 points a month across those brands while base points keep coming. Grocery, insurance, and utility and telecom points are each capped at 2,000 a calendar month, UPI purchases at 500, and one statement cycle tops out at 50,000 points.
- Axis Select: 10 EDGE REWARD Points per ₹200, doubled to 20 on the retail shopping (department stores, grocery stores, clothing and accessory stores) for the first ₹20,000 of such spends each month.
What a point is worth
This is where the two cards part way. A Regalia Gold point is worth ₹0.65 on the Exclusive Gold Catalogue, ₹0.50 on flights and hotels (up to 70% of a booking), up to ₹0.35 on vouchers, and only 15 paise as cashback since 1 November 2025. So 5 points on ₹200 return ₹3.25 on the catalogue (5 times ₹0.65, or 1.625%), ₹2.50 on flights (5 times ₹0.50, or 1.25%) and a mere ₹0.75 as cashback (5 times 15 paise, or 0.375%). Axis values its welcome points at ₹2,000 for 10,000, which is ₹0.20 a point, so 10 points on ₹200 is ₹2 (1%) and the 2X rate is 2%.
The exclusions is overlapping: fuel, rent, government payments and wallet loads earn nothing on either. HDFC also excludes EMI, app-paid education and gaming; Axis excludes insurance, education, utilities and telecom, gold, gift cards and tolls. Regalia Gold points last 2 years and Axis points 3 years, or less if the account sit idle for 365 days.
Three spenders, both cards
Regalia Gold points are valued at the ₹0.65 catalogue rate and Axis points at ₹0.20, one ₹116.82 redemption (₹99 plus GST) comes off each card, and milestone vouchers count at face value. "Clothing" means department store and clothing shops.
| Spender | Monthly mix | Regalia Gold points a year | Axis Select points a year | Regalia Gold a year, net | Axis Select a year, net |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Light, ₹32,000 | Grocery ₹10,000, clothing ₹4,000, dining ₹6,000, online ₹6,000, bills ₹4,000, fuel ₹2,000 | 9,000 | 29,000 | ₹2,783 (fee paid) | ₹2,143 (fee paid) |
| Typical, ₹80,000 | Grocery ₹15,000, clothing ₹5,000, Myntra and Nykaa ₹5,000, dining ₹10,000, travel ₹15,000, other shopping ₹20,000, bills ₹10,000 | 30,000 | 59,000 | ₹35,383 (with ₹16,000 of vouchers) | ₹11,683 (fee waived) |
| Heavy, ₹1,50,000 | Grocery ₹20,000, clothing ₹10,000, Myntra and Nykaa ₹10,000, dining ₹20,000, travel ₹40,000, other shopping ₹35,000, bills ₹15,000 | 57,000 | 98,000 | ₹52,933 (with ₹16,000 of vouchers) | ₹19,483 (fee waived) |
Light. Regalia Gold: ₹30,000 of eligible spend (fuel earns nothing) gives 750 points a month (₹30,000 divided by 200, times 5), 9,000 a year, worth ₹5,850 at ₹0.65. Yearly spend of ₹3,84,000 (₹32,000 times 12) misses the ₹4 lakh waiver, so after the ₹2,950 fee and one redemption ₹2,783 is left. Axis Select: ₹14,000 of grocery and clothing at 2X earns 1,400 points and ₹12,000 of dining and online earn 600, so 2,000 a month and 24,000 a year. Eligible spends of ₹3,12,000 (₹26,000 times 12) clear the ₹3 lakh milestone for 5,000 more, making 29,000 points worth ₹5,800, and after the ₹3,540 fee and a redemption that is ₹2,143. It's close, the Axis offers could easily tip it.
Typical. Regalia Gold: ₹75,000 of ordinary spends earn 1,875 points (₹75,000 divided by 200, times 5) and ₹5,000 at the 5X brands earn 625 (25 per ₹200), so 2,500 a month and 30,000 a year, worth ₹19,500 at ₹0.65. Each quarter's ₹2,40,000 (₹80,000 times 3) passes ₹1.5 lakh for a ₹1,500 voucher, ₹6,000 a year, and ₹9,60,000 of yearly spend crosses both the ₹5 lakh and ₹7.5 lakh flight-voucher marks for ₹10,000 more. The fee get waived, so the net is ₹35,383. Axis Select: the first ₹20,000 of grocery and clothing earns 2,000 points and ₹50,000 of other eligible spends earn 2,500, so 4,500 a month and 54,000 a year, plus 5,000 at ₹3 lakh, or 59,000 points worth ₹11,800. ₹8,40,000 of eligible spends (₹70,000 times 12, bills excluded) waive the fee, leaving ₹11,683.
Heavy. Regalia Gold: ₹1,40,000 of ordinary spends earn 3,500 points and ₹10,000 at 5X earn 1,250, which is 4,750 a month and 57,000 a year worth ₹37,050, and the same ₹16,000 of vouchers makes the net ₹52,933. Axis Select: ₹30,000 of grocery and clothing earns 2,000 points on the first ₹20,000 and 500 on the rest, and ₹1,05,000 of other eligible spends earn 5,250, so 7,750 a month, 93,000 a year, and with the 5,000 bonus 98,000 points worth ₹19,600, or ₹19,483 net.
Two warning go with these sums. Take Regalia Gold points as cashback and the typical year's 30,000 points are worth only ₹4,500 (30,000 times 15 paise), so the catalogue or flights is the only sensible route. And Axis Select's offers sit outside the table: ₹500 off a ₹2,500 BigBasket order once a month is up to ₹6,000 a year (₹500 times 12), and ₹200 off a ₹1,000 Swiggy order twice a month up to ₹4,800 (₹200 times 2 times 12), which for a light spender are worth more than all the points.
Lounges, forex, insurance and extras
Lounge access
Regalia Gold gives 3 domestic lounge visits a calendar quarter if you spent ₹60,000 or more in the previous quarter, and up to 6 visits a year outside India through Priority Pass for primary and add-on members; you ask for the Priority Pass through phone banking after at least 4 transactions. Axis Select gives 2 domestic visits a quarter by swiping the card if you spent ₹50,000 in the last 3 months, and 6 international Priority Pass visits a card year, with 6 more (up to 12) once you spend ₹3 lakh in that year. Since 28 August 2026 the Priority Pass on Select don't get you into Indian domestic lounges.
Spending abroad
Regalia Gold's 2% markup against 3.5% on Select is a real saving for travellers. On ₹1 lakh of foreign spends Regalia Gold costs ₹2,360 (2% plus 18% GST) and Select ₹4,130 (3.5% plus GST), a gap of ₹1,770, which alone cover more than half of Regalia Gold's fee. Paying in rupees abroad costs 1.75% on HDFC and 3.5% on Axis.
Fuel, insurance and the rest
- Fuel: Regalia Gold has no fuel surcharge waiver. Select refunds the 1% surcharge on fills of ₹400 to ₹4,000, up to ₹400 a statement cycle.
- Insurance: HDFC's group policy for 23 July 2026 to 22 July 2027 names Regalia Gold, with air accident cover of USD 125,000, emergency medical expenses abroad of USD 18,750, card liability and credit shield of ₹9,00,000 each, and USD 313 each for a missed connection or a flight delay. Select lists purchase protection up to ₹1 lakh and a combined USD 500 for lost travel documents and delayed or lost checked baggage.
- Welcome: Regalia Gold gives Swiggy One and MMT Black Gold memberships on ₹1 lakh of spends in the first 90 days. Select gives 10,000 points, worth ₹2,000, on the first transaction within 30 days, though not to Burgundy or lifetime-free cardholders.
- Extras: Regalia Gold's Boarding Edge give any 2 of a spa visit, an Uber airport transfer, hotel dining or a room upgrade each calendar quarter when you upload a boarding pass on SmartBuy. Select adds 6 golf rounds a year, and 6 more at ₹3 lakh of spends.
For a frequent flyer the HDFC package is clearly more richer. For someone who flies once a year, Select's golf and food offers may get more use.
Eligibility: the biggest gap between the two
| Rule | HDFC Regalia Gold | Axis Bank Select |
|---|---|---|
| Age | 21 to 60 (salaried), 21 to 65 (self-employed) | 18 to 70 |
| Income, salaried | Gross monthly income above ₹1.5 lakh (government employees above ₹1 lakh) | Net income of at least ₹6 lakh a year |
| Income, self-employed | ITR above ₹18 lakh a year | Net income of at least ₹6 lakh a year |
| Documents | Identity, address and income proof | PAN, payslip, Form 16 or ITR, and a residence proof |
| How to apply | HDFC Bank online or at a branch | Axis website, Axis Mobile app or a branch |
On eligibility the cards are not even in the same league. HDFC wants a gross monthly income above ₹1.5 lakh, which is ₹18 lakh a year (₹1.5 lakh times 12), or above ₹1 lakh for government employees, and an ITR above ₹18 lakh for the self-employed. Its FAQ talks of net monthly income where the eligibility section say gross, so expect the bank to look at take-home pay too. Axis asks for ₹6 lakh a year of net income, about ₹50,000 a month, for everyone aged 18 to 70.
So a salaried person earning between ₹50,000 and ₹1.5 lakh a month can realistically apply only for Select out of the two. HDFC's FAQ adds that a rejected applicant can re-apply after six months, good to know before you apply again in a hurry.
Whichever you pick, the decision rest with the bank. The RBI's 2025 card Directions require it to assess your independent financial means and the card limits you already hold, and to give the specific reasons in writing if it declines you. On Experian's 300 to 900 scale a score above 750 is generally considered good. Our eligibility criteria guide walks through what banks check.
Verdict: income first, then spending
Pick Regalia Gold if
- you earn above ₹1.5 lakh a month and spend at least ₹4 lakh a year, so the fee is waived;
- you redeem on the Gold Catalogue at ₹0.65 or on flights and hotels at ₹0.50, never as cashback;
- you travel abroad, where the 2% markup and the 6 Priority Pass visits pays off;
- you spend ₹1.5 lakh a quarter, which bring ₹6,000 of vouchers a year.
Pick Axis Select if
- your income is ₹6 lakh a year or more but below HDFC's bar;
- you shop on BigBasket and order on Swiggy every month and will actually use the codes;
- you want Priority Pass and golf, and can reach ₹3 lakh of eligible spends for the extra visits.
When neither suits
If you spend under ₹4 lakh a year and skip Axis's offers, both fees eat most of the value, and a lower-fee card from our best rewards cards serve you better. Lounge seekers can see more options in best airport lounge cards. Other pairings: SBI Elite vs Regalia Gold and IDFC FIRST Select vs Axis Select.
