IDFC FIRST Select vs Axis Bank Select: Free Card or ₹3,000 Points Card?
Axis Bank Select earns more points, 10 EDGE REWARD Points per ₹200, about 1% at Axis's own ₹0.20 a point, against 0.375% on IDFC FIRST Select. But FIRST Select is lifetime free, charges no forex markup and adds lounge and insurance benefits, so at ₹20,000 a month, or for anyone spending abroad, the free card leaves more in your pocket, while Axis pulls ahead from about ₹50,000 a month of domestic spends.
In short
Axis Bank Select pays more for big domestic spenders who reach its ₹3 lakh milestone, while IDFC FIRST Select is the better deal at modest spends, for spending abroad and for anyone who wants lounge and insurance cover without a fee.

Same name, very different cards
Both cards is called Select, and the resemblance mostly stops there. IDFC FIRST Bank's FIRST Select is lifetime free, with zero forex markup, a domestic airport lounge visit each quarter and a fair set of insurance covers, but a modest earn rate: 3 Reward Points per ₹200 at ₹0.25 a point, or 0.375%. Dining, travel and birthday spends earn 10 points per ₹200, which is 1.25%.
Axis Bank's Select costs ₹3,000 plus GST a year and earns 10 EDGE REWARD Points per ₹200. Axis puts its 10,000-point welcome benefit at ₹2,000, so a point is ₹0.20 and the base work out to 1%. Grocery, department and clothing stores earn double, on up to ₹20,000 of such spends a month.
Who each card is for
- IDFC FIRST Select: a person earning ₹12 lakh or more a year who spend around ₹20,000 a month, travels abroad now and then, and wants lounge visits and cover without a fee.
- Axis Bank Select: a household putting ₹50,000 or more a month on one card, much of it at supermarkets, that will clear ₹3 lakh in a card year for the extra points and the lounge visits that comes with it.
The verdict in two sentences
Around ₹20,000 a month, or whenever money is spent abroad, FIRST Select leaves you better off because it costs nothing and adds nothing on forex. From about ₹50,000 a month of domestic spends Axis Select earns enough to cover its fee and more, and at ₹8 lakh a year the fee disappear altogether.
Both cards are active and both changed a lot in 2026. IDFC made forex free on 9 September 2026 but stopped points on international spends from 26 October 2026, and Axis no longer counts excluded categories towards its ₹3 lakh milestone benefits from 1 October 2026.
A free card against a ₹3,000 card
FIRST Select has no joining or annual fee and no spend condition to keep it that way. The costs sits in the extras: an add-on card is ₹499 plus GST to join and the same each year, and the FIRST Digital RuPay companion card, which you need for UPI, is ₹199 plus GST to join and ₹199 plus GST a year.
Axis Select charges ₹3,000 plus GST to join and every year after, which is ₹3,540 with 18% GST (₹3,000 plus ₹540). It's waived on ₹8 lakh of spends in the preceding card anniversary year, a big amount for most of people, about ₹66,667 a month (₹8,00,000 divided by 12), and Burgundy account holders pay nothing. That ₹8 lakh is counted strictly: insurance, rent, fuel, education, utilities and telecom, government, wallet, gold and gift card spends doesn't count, nor do EMIs or cash. Add-ons are free.
| Charge | IDFC FIRST Select | Axis Bank Select |
|---|---|---|
| Interest | 0.71% to 3.85% a month, set per cardholder; 3.99% if the minimum is missed | 3.75% a month, 55.55% a year |
| Late fee | 15% of total due, ₹100 to ₹1,300 | Nil up to ₹500, then ₹500 to ₹1,300 by slab |
| Cash withdrawal | ₹199 per withdrawal plus GST | 2.5%, minimum ₹500, with interest from the date of withdrawal |
| Rent | 1%, minimum ₹249 | 1% plus GST |
| Utilities | 1% above ₹20,000 a cycle | 1% from ₹25,000 a cycle |
| Fuel | 1% above ₹30,000 a cycle | 1% from ₹50,000 a cycle |
| Forex markup | 0% | 3.5% |
A late payment show how differently they work. On ₹8,000 due, IDFC's 15% is ₹1,200 (15% of ₹8,000) while Axis charges ₹750 for its ₹5,001 to ₹10,000 slab. On ₹40,000 due, IDFC stops at its ₹1,300 maximum and Axis charges ₹1,200. IDFC works the fee out on the previous statement's total due less payments made before the due date, so even a part payment bring it down.
IDFC also charges 1% on railway spends above ₹25,000 and tolls above ₹10,000 in a cycle, and 1% (minimum ₹249) on education paid through third-party apps. Axis has its 1% on wallet loads and online gaming from ₹10,000 a cycle, ₹175 for paying cash at a branch and, since 28 August 2026, a 3.5% markup on rupee payments to overseas merchants, up from 1.5%.
Points, point values and caps
FIRST Select earns 3 points per ₹200 on most spends, 0.375% at ₹0.25 a point. Dining (food delivery included), travel bookings with airlines, hotels and travel agents, and spends on your birthday earn 10 per ₹200, or 1.25%, from the first transaction since 18 June 2026; before that, you was having to spend ₹20,000 in a cycle first. Utilities, insurance, railways and FASTag get 1 point per ₹200, and fuel, EMIs and cash get none. International spends have earned nothing since 26 October 2026 under the bank's notice of 9 September 2026, even though the card page still mention 10X abroad.
Hotels and flights booked in the bank's app through FIRST Rewards Gallery earn bonus points, described as 20% on hotels and 10% on flights, capped at 8,000 bonus points a calendar month, worth ₹2,000 at ₹0.25. Points can pay up to 70% of such a booking. From the July 2026 statement, points last 24 months, each redemption costs ₹99 plus GST, and points are credited only when the minimum due is paid on time.
Axis Select earns 10 EDGE REWARD Points per ₹200, about 1%, and 20 per ₹200 at grocery stores, department stores and clothing stores, but only on the first ₹20,000 of those spends in a month. Insurance, rent, fuel, education, utilities and telecom, wallets, gold and jewellery, government, gift cards and tolls earns nothing. Points last 3 years, or until 365 days without activity, and each redemption on the EDGE REWARDS portal costs ₹99, with ₹199 to move points to a partner programme.
The milestone matter a lot on Axis: 5,000 points, worth ₹1,000, on ₹3 lakh of spends in a card anniversary year, and from 1 October 2026 the excluded categories don't count towards that ₹3 lakh.
Three spenders, both cards
Points are valued at ₹0.25 on FIRST Select and ₹0.20 on Axis Select, the figures each bank give. This is year two, so no welcome benefits, and travel here means flights and hotels booked direct, not in the IDFC app.
| Per year | ₹20,000 a month | ₹50,000 a month | ₹80,000 a month |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly split | Dining ₹4,000, grocery and stores ₹6,000, travel ₹2,000, other ₹6,000, utilities ₹2,000 | Dining ₹8,000, grocery and stores ₹15,000, travel ₹7,000, other ₹16,000, utilities ₹4,000 | Dining ₹10,000, grocery and stores ₹25,000, travel ₹15,000, other ₹25,000, utilities ₹5,000 |
| FIRST Select points a month | 490 | 1,235 | 2,025 |
| FIRST Select value | ₹1,470 | ₹3,705 | ₹6,075 |
| Axis Select points a month | 1,200 | 3,050 | 4,750 |
| Axis milestone | None | ₹1,000 | ₹1,000 |
| Axis fee with GST | ₹3,540 | ₹3,540 | Waived |
| Axis Select net | Minus ₹660 | ₹4,780 | ₹12,400 |
- ₹20,000: FIRST Select gives 300 points on dining and travel (₹6,000 at 10 per ₹200), 180 on grocery and other (₹6,000 plus ₹6,000, so ₹12,000, at 3 per ₹200) and 10 on utilities (₹2,000 at 1 per ₹200). 490 points at ₹0.25 is ₹122.50 a month, ₹1,470 a year. Axis gives 600 on grocery (₹6,000 at 20 per ₹200) and 600 on dining, travel and other (₹12,000 at 10 per ₹200), nothing on utilities: 1,200 points, ₹240 a month, ₹2,880 a year. Counted spends of ₹2.16 lakh (₹20,000 less ₹2,000 of utilities, so ₹18,000, times 12) miss both the ₹3 lakh milestone and the ₹8 lakh waiver, so ₹2,880 minus ₹3,540 is a loss of ₹660.
- ₹50,000: FIRST Select gives 750 (₹15,000 at 10 per ₹200), 465 (₹15,000 plus ₹16,000, so ₹31,000, at 3 per ₹200) and 20 on utilities, so 1,235 points, ₹308.75 a month, ₹3,705 a year. Axis gives 1,500 on grocery (₹15,000 at 20 per ₹200) and 1,550 on the rest (₹8,000 plus ₹7,000 plus ₹16,000, so ₹31,000, at 10 per ₹200): 3,050 points, ₹610 a month, ₹7,320 a year. Counted spends of ₹5.52 lakh (₹50,000 less ₹4,000 of utilities, so ₹46,000, times 12) earns the 5,000-point milestone, ₹1,000, but fall short of ₹8 lakh: ₹7,320 plus ₹1,000 minus ₹3,540 is ₹4,780.
- ₹80,000: FIRST Select gives 1,250 (₹25,000 at 10 per ₹200), 750 (₹50,000 at 3 per ₹200) and 25 on utilities, so 2,025 points, ₹506.25 a month, ₹6,075 a year. On Axis, grocery passes the ₹20,000 limit: 2,000 points on the first ₹20,000, 250 on the other ₹5,000, and 2,500 on ₹50,000 of the rest. 4,750 points is ₹950 a month, ₹11,400 a year, plus ₹1,000 of milestone, and counted spends of ₹9 lakh (₹80,000 less ₹5,000, so ₹75,000, times 12) clear the waiver: ₹12,400.
On points alone Axis wins once its fee is covered. FIRST Select's figures leave out its free extras, though, the lounge visits, insurance and zero forex, which the benefits tab puts a number on where it can.
Forex, lounges, offers and cover
Forex is the biggest single gap. FIRST Select has charged 0% markup since 9 September 2026, though foreign spends earn no points. Axis Select charges 3.5%, and nothing in its exclusions stops foreign spends earning the base rate. On a ₹1 lakh trip, Axis adds ₹3,500 of markup (3.5% of ₹1,00,000) and gives back 5,000 points (₹1,00,000 at 10 per ₹200), worth ₹1,000, so the trip cost ₹2,500 more than on FIRST Select.
Lounges lean the other way. Axis gives 2 domestic airport lounge visits a quarter once you've spent ₹50,000 in the last 3 months, plus a Priority Pass with 6 international visits a year and 6 more if you spend ₹3 lakh in that year, so up to 12. Since 28 August 2026 the Priority Pass no longer works at Indian domestic lounges. FIRST Select gives 1 domestic airport visit and 4 railway lounge visits a quarter, each needing ₹20,000 of spends in the previous calendar month, and no international lounge at all is given.
Movie offers looks alike on paper. FIRST Select's Buy 1 Get 1 on the District app works twice a month after a ₹20,000 month, though the bank's text gives no discount cap. Axis give up to ₹250 off twice a month, and since 1 November 2026 that needs ₹25,000 of spends across the previous 3 months. Axis adds BigBasket (₹500 off once a month on ₹2,500 or more) and Swiggy (₹200 off twice a month on orders of ₹1,000 or more), worth up to ₹6,000 and ₹4,800 a year (₹500 times 12, and ₹200 times 2 times 12) if you would shop there anyway.
Insurance and the rest
- FIRST Select: air accident cover of ₹1 crore, personal accident cover of ₹5,00,000 and lost card liability of ₹50,000, valid only with a card transaction in the last 30 days; travel insurance up to USD 300, trip cancellation cover up to ₹10,000 and roadside assistance worth ₹1,399.
- Axis Select: a purchase protection up to ₹1 lakh and the combined cover up to USD 500 for lost travel documents and delayed or lost checked-in baggage, plus 6 golf rounds a year and 6 more at ₹3 lakh of spends.
- Fuel: FIRST Select waive 1% on fills of ₹200 to ₹5,000, up to ₹300 a cycle; Axis does it on ₹400 to ₹4,000, up to ₹400 a cycle.
- Welcome: FIRST Select gives a ₹500 voucher for ₹5,000 spent in 30 days and 5% back up to ₹1,000 on your first EMI conversion. Axis gives 10,000 points worth ₹2,000 on a first transaction within 30 days, which covers more than half of the first year's ₹3,540.
One more date for Axis holders: from 15 November 2026, memberships linked to Select renew only with your explicit consent, so look out for that request.
The income bar is the first filter
This is where many readers will decide. IDFC asks for annual income of ₹12 lakh or more for FIRST Select, which is ₹1 lakh a month (₹12,00,000 divided by 12), with no separate figure for the self-employed. You must be at least 21, an Indian citizen, with a healthy credit score and credit usage within an acceptable level. The bank don't publish an age rule for self-employed applicants or an exact document list beyond identity proof, income proof and Video KYC.
Axis asks half the income: a net ₹6 lakh a year, about ₹50,000 a month (₹6,00,000 divided by 12), whether salaried or self-employed, and an age of 18 to 70. The documents is a PAN card copy, income proof such as a payslip, Form 16 or IT return, and a residence proof like a driving licence or electricity bill.
| Rule | IDFC FIRST Select | Axis Bank Select |
|---|---|---|
| Age | At least 21 | 18 to 70 |
| Income | ₹12 lakh a year | Net ₹6 lakh a year |
| Credit | Healthy score, usage within an acceptable level | Score and history may be checked |
| Documents | Identity proof, income proof, Video KYC | PAN, payslip, Form 16 or IT return, residence proof |
| How to apply | Online with Video KYC, or at a branch | Online form, Axis Mobile app or a branch |
Neither bank will promise approval; that's their decision. RBI requires card issuers to assess your independent financial means, and to give the specific reasons in writing if they say no. Self-employed readers can check our guide to credit cards for the self-employed, which explain what banks usually ask for, and IDFC customers can find helplines on our IDFC FIRST Bank customer care page.
FIRST Select or Axis Select: the call
- You spend about ₹20,000 a month: FIRST Select. It earns ₹1,470 a year at no cost, while Axis would have leave you ₹660 down.
- You spend ₹50,000 or more a month at home, much of it on groceries: Axis Select. Its 1% base, the 2X on stores and the ₹3 lakh milestone beat FIRST Select by ₹1,075 a year at ₹50,000 (₹4,780 minus ₹3,705) and by ₹6,325 at ₹80,000 (₹12,400 minus ₹6,075).
- You travel abroad: FIRST Select, for the zero markup, unless Priority Pass lounges abroad matter more to you than ₹3,500 of markup on every ₹1 lakh spent.
- Your income is between ₹6 lakh and ₹12 lakh: of these two, only Axis Select are open to you.
When neither one fits
If you like FIRST Select's free, zero-forex package but don't earn ₹12 lakh, IDFC's FIRST Millennia asks ₹3 lakh a year and has the same 3 points per ₹200 base. If you want a paid card with more lounges and a lower markup than Axis, SBI Card's ELITE lists 8 domestic visits a year and 1.99% forex, but costs ₹4,999. Our best rewards cards page compare the wider field.
