HDFC Freedom in short
Freedom's main pull is how little it asks from you. A salaried applicant needs gross monthly income above ₹12,000 and a self-employed one an ITR above ₹2 lakh a year, and the fee is ₹500 plus GST. The card is active and HDFC is taking new applications.
HDFC lists it on RuPay, so it can sit in a UPI app for paying shop QR codes on credit. A Visa or Mastercard version we could not confirm.
Three things that decide whether it fits
- The five 10X merchants. BigBasket, BookMyShow, OYO, Swiggy and Uber earns ten times the base points, up to 2,500 points a calendar month. Without these apps the card has little to offer.
- The base rate. Everything else gets 1 point per ₹200, and it used to be better.
- The missing price tag. HDFC doesn't publish what a Freedom point is worth, so you can count points but not rupees.
What changed recently
On 15 May 2026 Freedom's base went from 1 point per ₹150 to 1 per ₹200, along with most HDFC points cards. On ₹30,000 of ordinary spends that is 150 points now (₹30,000 divided by 200) against 200 before (₹30,000 divided by 150), so a quarter lesser points for the same money.
The same date added a 1.75% markup on rupee payments abroad and a ₹199 card reissue fee. Earlier, education paid through third-party apps stopped earning points on 1 September 2024, and online gaming on 1 July 2025.
Freedom fees and charges, worked out
You pay ₹500 to join and ₹500 every year after, and GST is extra on both. At the 18% rate HDFC uses in its MITC examples that's ₹90 of tax (18% of ₹500), so ₹590 a year in all. HDFC bills the first-year fee on the 120th day after issue, so it don't show on your first statement.
The joining fee has no waiver. The renewal fee goes if you spend ₹50,000 or more in the year, about ₹4,167 a month (₹50,000 divided by 12). Anyone using it for food orders, cabs and bills crosses that easily, a card kept in the drawer will not. Add-on cards are free.
Interest, late fee and cash
Interest on a carried balance is 3.75% a month, or 45% a year, plus GST. It is counted by the day, so ₹10,000 left unpaid for 30 days cost about ₹370 (₹10,000 times 45% times 30, divided by 365, is ₹369.86). Late fees go by bill size, for example ₹600 on ₹1,001 to ₹5,000 and ₹1,300 above ₹50,000, plus GST, and only after the minimum due stay unpaid 3 days past the due date.
A ATM withdrawal costs 2.5% or ₹500, whichever is higher, plus interest from day one. On ₹10,000 the 2.5% is only ₹250, so you pay ₹500.
Forex and the special fees
- Foreign currency spends: 3.5% markup plus GST, so ₹700 on ₹20,000 of hotel bills abroad (3.5% of ₹20,000).
- Rent: 1% per payment, capped at ₹4,999 a transaction since 1 July 2025, with no points.
- Wallet loads outside PayZapp, and online gaming: 1% on the total once either one cross ₹10,000 in a calendar month.
- Utility bills: 1% when they exceeds ₹50,000 in a month.
- Fuel: fills of ₹400 to ₹5,000 get the 1% surcharge back, up to ₹250 a statement cycle; a single fill above ₹15,000 draws a 1% fee.
- School fees through apps like CRED: 1%, but paying the school directly cost nothing.

How Freedom points add up
The earn has two speeds. BigBasket, BookMyShow, OYO, Swiggy and Uber pay 10X Reward Points; HDFC states only the multiple, and on today's base of 1 point per ₹200 that is 10 points per ₹200, the figure we use. These 10X points stop at 2,500 a calendar month, reached at ₹50,000 of partner spends (2,500 divided by 10, times ₹200). HDFC gives this cap for the RuPay card.
Everywhere else it's 1 point per ₹200, and only full ₹200 blocks count. A ₹399 order earn 1 point at base, or 10 at a partner, exactly like a ₹200 one. So a ₹400 Swiggy order is two blocks and 20 points, and a ₹250 Uber ride gets 10. Clubbing two small orders into one is not a bad habit.
Caps, exclusions and redemption
- UPI purchases earn at most 500 points a calendar month and grocery at most 1,000. HDFC don't say whether BigBasket's 10X points also sit under the grocery limit, so a big BigBasket month may earn less than our maths show.
- Not more than 15,000 points can earn in one statement cycle.
- No points on fuel, rent, government payments, wallet and gift card loads, EasyEMI, education through apps, online gaming, cash, bill payments and fees.
- Cashback against the statement needs at least ₹500 and costs ₹50 plus GST a request; catalogue orders cost ₹99 plus GST.
What a point is worth in rupees is not published. HDFC's MITC gives cashback values of 10 to 20 paise for several other cards, but Freedom is not among them. Points lapse after 2 years, or after 365 days if the card goes unused. The welcome is 500 points once the joining fee is paid; there are no milestones besides the renewal waiver.
Three spenders, counted in points
With no rupee value to use, we count points, then work out the value per point that would cover the ₹590 fee. Each order is treated as a separate transaction.
| Monthly spends | Light, ₹8,000 | Typical, ₹25,000 | Heavy, ₹60,000 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Swiggy | 6 orders of ₹400: 120 | 10 orders of ₹400: 200 | 26 orders of ₹500: 520 |
| Uber | 4 rides of ₹250: 40 | 8 rides of ₹250: 80 | 32 rides of ₹250: 320 |
| BigBasket | None | 2 orders of ₹3,000: 300 | 4 orders of ₹4,000: 800 |
| BookMyShow and OYO | None | ₹1,000 of tickets: 50 | ₹2,000 of tickets and ₹16,000 of stays: 900 |
| Other card spends at base | ₹2,600 in one bill: 13 | ₹8,000 in four bills: 40 | ₹5,000 in two bills: 24 |
| UPI at base | ₹2,000 in payments under ₹200: 0 | ₹4,000 in payments of ₹500: 16 | None |
| Points a month | 173 | 686 | 2,524 after the 10X cap |
| Points a year | 2,076 | 8,232 | 30,288 |
Light: 2,076 points (173 times 12) on ₹96,000 a year (₹8,000 times 12). To pay back ₹590, each point would need to be worth about 28 paise (₹590 divided by 2,076). But the spend clears ₹50,000, so from year two there's no fee and whatever the points is worth is pure gain.
Typical: 8,232 points (686 times 12); the first-year ₹590 is covered at about 7 paise a point (₹590 divided by 8,232). 630 of the 686 monthly points come from partners (200 plus 80 plus 300 plus 50), so this is really a Swiggy and BigBasket card for this person.
Heavy: partners add to 2,540 points (520 plus 320 plus 800 plus 900) but the cap holds them at 2,500, so 40 a month are lost, leaving 30,288 a year (2,524 times 12). Past ₹50,000 of partner spends no more 10X points come, and a heavy user better send the extra to another card.
Freedom: higher-reward categories
| Category | Rate | Cap |
|---|---|---|
| BigBasket, BookMyShow, OYO, Swiggy and Uber | 10X Reward Points / CashPoints | Monthly Cap: 2,500 CashPoints (stated for the Freedom RuPay card), ₹2,500, calendar month |
Freedom: how rewards work

| No rewards on |
|
| Lower rewards on |

| Fuel surcharge waiver | 1% fuel surcharge waiver on transactions of ₹400 to ₹5,000; maximum waiver ₹250 per statement cycle |

Who can get the Freedom card and how to apply
Salaried applicants should be 21 to 60 years old with gross monthly income above ₹12,000. Self-employed applicants should be 21 to 65 with an income tax return above ₹2 lakh a year, roughly ₹16,667 a month (₹2,00,000 divided by 12).
We couldn't read the card page's document list, so go by HDFC's general guidance: identity, address and income proof, which existing HDFC customers may not need to give again.
Apply online with the Apply Now button on the card page or at an HDFC Bank branch; HDFC's FAQ say a branch visit is not mandatory. The bank must give you a one-page Key Fact Statement first. Do read it, it's where the 3.75% a month is written down.
What decides the answer
- The RBI's 2025 card Directions make HDFC judge your own repayment capacity and the limits you already hold elsewhere.
- Your credit report matter. Experian scores run from 300 to 900, with above 750 generally seen as good.
- Clearing the ₹12,000 line is not approval. The decision is HDFC's, and a rejection must come with specific reasons in writing.
Once the card arrive, activate it within 30 days, or HDFC must seek your OTP consent and close it free if you decline.

Is Freedom a good fit for you?
The person who gains most is a young earner who lives on Swiggy and Uber, buys groceries on BigBasket and catches a BookMyShow film now and then. A big share of their spends land in the 10X bucket, the renewal fee goes after ₹50,000 a year, and the RuPay card works on UPI. A card this cheap to keep also builds a credit history; our cards for beginners list has other first cards.
Skip it if you want to value rewards upfront: MoneyBack+, at the same fee, at least states 20 paise a point. Skip it too if your big spends are rent, fuel or wallet loads, none of which earn points and two of which attracts fees. Travellers pay 3.5% on every swipe abroad and get no lounge.
The trade-offs
Freedom swaps a low entry bar for a low ceiling. The 10X list is short, small orders round down, the base fell by a quarter in May 2026 and no insurance is listed. On the plus side the fee is small and easy to waive, add-ons are free, and very much convenience is there for UPI users. If you outgrow it, HDFC Millennia pays cashback with a rupee value.
Pros
- 10X Reward Points at BigBasket, BookMyShow, OYO, Swiggy and Uber, up to 2,500 a month
- Low entry bar: gross monthly income above ₹12,000 for salaried applicants
- ₹500 plus GST fee, with the renewal waived on ₹50,000 of yearly spends
- RuPay card that links to UPI, earning up to 500 points a month there
- Free add-on cards and 500 welcome points when the joining fee is paid
Cons
- HDFC does not publish the rupee value of a Freedom point
- Base earn cut to 1 point per ₹200 from 15 May 2026, a quarter less than before
- Only full ₹200 blocks earn points, so small orders lose out
- No points on fuel, rent, wallet loads or EasyEMI, and fees on rent and large wallet loads
- 3.5% forex markup and no lounge access
- ₹50 plus GST charged on every cashback redemption
Freedom against three entry cards
HDFC MoneyBack+
MoneyBack+ is the closest sibling: same ₹500 fee plus GST, same ₹50,000 waiver, also on RuPay. It earns double the base, 2 CashPoints per ₹200, with 10X at Amazon, BigBasket, Flipkart, Reliance Smart SuperStore and Swiggy up to 2,500 a month. HDFC prices its points, 20 paise each as statement cashback since 1 November 2025, and adds a ₹500 voucher for each quarter with ₹50,000 of spends. The catch: gross monthly income above ₹20,000, not ₹12,000.
ICICI Bank Coral
ICICI Coral also costs ₹500 plus GST and has a RuPay version. It earns 2 points per ₹100 with no partner boosts, and its point value isn't published also. It adds one domestic airport lounge visit a quarter after ₹75,000 of spends the quarter before, and milestone points from ₹2 lakh a year. ICICI's terms reverse that year's fee once you spend ₹1.5 lakh, though its card page words it as a waiver for the next year. Income asked: ₹20,000 a month.
SimplySAVE SBI Card
SimplySAVE costs ₹499 plus taxes and gives 10 points per ₹150 on dining, movies, departmental stores and groceries, up to 5,000 a month, with 4 points worth ₹1. That's a published 1.67% there (10 points at ₹0.25 is ₹2.50, divided by ₹150). Its fee comes back only on ₹1 lakh a year, and SBI Card publishes no minimum income.
Who should pick which
- Freedom: you earn ₹12,000 to ₹20,000 a month and Swiggy and Uber is where most of your money go.
- MoneyBack+: you clear its income bar and shop on Amazon or Flipkart.
- Coral: you spend over ₹75,000 a quarter and want a lounge visit.
- SimplySAVE: groceries and restaurants fill most of your bill.
