ICICI Bank Coral Credit Card Review: A ₹500 First Card That Works on UPI
The ICICI Bank Coral Credit Card is an entry card at ₹500 + GST a year that earns 2 reward points per ₹100, works on UPI in its RuPay form, and reverses that year's fee once you spend ₹1.5 lakh. ICICI does not publish what a point is worth, and the airport lounge visit needs ₹75,000 of spending in the previous quarter, so it suits first-time card users more than reward chasers.

A low-fee starter card from ICICI Bank
Coral is ICICI Bank's entry rewards card, often the first credit card a salaried person gets from the bank. ICICI's current pages name a RuPay version and a RuPay Braille version, and the RuPay card links to UPI, so your credit line works at any shop's QR code. ICICI do not name another network for Coral on those pages.
The fee is ₹500 + GST to join and ₹500 + GST a year after, and points come at 2 per ₹100 on most retail spends. The airport lounge visit, the BookMyShow discount and the milestones need spending to switch on. New to cards? Our credit cards guide covers the basics.
What matters most
- The fee reversal. Under ICICI's terms, spend ₹1.5 lakh in a card year and that year's ₹500 fee is reversed. The card page words it differently, as a waiver for the next year.
- Points with no stated value. The current ICICI pages doesn't say what a Coral point is worth, and every redemption costs ₹99 + GST.
- Perks tied to spending. The domestic lounge visit needs ₹75,000 of eligible spends in the previous quarter, and BookMyShow needs ₹25,000.
Changes from 2024 to 2026
For a entry card the list of changes is long. Rent and wallet loads stopped earning on 5 February 2024. On 15 November 2024 came interest at 3.75% a month (45% a year), 1% fees on fuel above ₹10,000, utilities above ₹50,000 and education through apps, a ₹199 add-on fee, point caps on utility, insurance and grocery, and the rule that rent, government and education spends don't count for the fee reversal or milestones.
The ₹75,000 lounge condition started on 1 January 2025. In 2026 the currency conversion fee jumped to 3.5% from 1% on 15 January, transport points was capped from 1 February, the minimum due formula changed on 1 March and BookMyShow began needing ₹25,000 a quarter on 1 April. Coral is active and open to new applicants.
What Coral costs you in a year
The joining fee is ₹500 and the annual fee is ₹500, with GST extra on both. GST at 18% adds ₹90 each time, so you actually pays ₹590 at joining and ₹590 at every renewal unless the reversal kicks in.
The ₹1.5 lakh reversal, and whether you will reach it
ICICI's terms say the fee for a card year is reversed once you complete that year with ₹1.5 lakh of spends; the card page says it is waived for the next year instead, and we go with the terms. Across 12 months, ₹1,50,000 is ₹12,500 a month. Someone who puts groceries, fuel, phone bill and shopping on Coral get there easily, but rent, government payments, education fees, EMIs, fees and interest haven't counted since 15 November 2024.
Interest, late fee and cash
Revolving a balance cost 3.75% a month, which is 45% a year, so ₹10,000 left unpaid builds about ₹375 of interest in a month. Late fees go by slabs on what is still outstanding, from ₹100 (₹100 to ₹500) through ₹600 (up to ₹5,000) and ₹900 (up to ₹25,000) to ₹1,300 beyond ₹50,000, and only when the minimum due is unpaid 3 days after the due date. A cash withdrawal costs 2.5%, at least ₹500, plus interest from that day, and in the first 180 days ICICI holds cash to 10% of the limit up to ₹20,000.
Abroad, and the fees on everyday payments
Abroad, Coral is a costly price option. The foreign currency mark-up is 3.5%, and paying in rupees at a foreign merchant attracts the same 3.5% as a currency conversion fee from 15 January 2026, up from 1%. On ₹10,000 of foreign spending that is ₹350 plus GST.
At home a few payments carry a 1% fee. Pay ₹15,000 of rent with Coral and ₹150 is added, with no points; a ₹5,000 wallet load costs ₹50. Fuel pays 1% only above ₹10,000, utilities and transport only above ₹50,000, education through third-party apps 1% at any amount, and skill-based gaming 2%. An add-on card is ₹199 a year, a replacement ₹200 (₹300 from 11 December 2026), and paying the bill in cash at a branch cost ₹150 since 15 January 2026.

Points, caps and what they could be worth
Coral earn 2 ICICI Bank Reward Points for every ₹100 of retail spend, and utility and insurance payments earn 1 point per ₹100. There are no bonus categories, so ₹10,000 of shopping and dining simply gives 200 points. Each statement cycle, points count only on the first ₹40,000 of utility spends, ₹40,000 of insurance, ₹20,000 of grocery and departmental spends and, from 1 February 2026, ₹10,000 of transport.
Nothing is earned on cash, rent, wallet loads, fuel, EMIs, fees or interest. RuPay spends on UPI earn as per the normal structure, which mean a UPI payment at the grocery store earns like a swipe.
Value, redemption and expiry
Here is the weak spot. ICICI doesn't publish a rupee value for a Coral point on its current pages, and you redeem from a catalogue of vouchers, travel and luggage, appliances, electronics and fashion. Each redemption cost ₹99 + GST, so redeem in one go rather than in small lots. Points stay valid for 3 years from issue.
Milestones and extras
Spend ₹2 lakh in an anniversary year and 2,000 bonus points arrive, then 1,000 for every further ₹1 lakh, up to 10,000 a year, a ceiling you hit at ₹10 lakh (2,000 at ₹2 lakh plus 8 steps of 1,000). BookMyShow gives 25% off up to ₹100 twice a month after ₹25,000 of spends in the previous quarter, INOX the same 25% off up to ₹100 twice a month, and the RuPay card adds ₹2 lakh of personal accident cover and a 24/7 concierge.
Three worked examples
With no published point value, these count points, then work out what a point would have to be worth to cover the ₹590 fee with GST.
| Monthly spend | Light: ₹10,000 | Typical: ₹20,000 | Heavy: ₹50,000 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shopping, dining and other retail at 2 per ₹100 | ₹6,000 = 120 points | ₹12,000 = 240 points | ₹20,000 = 400 points |
| Groceries at 2 per ₹100, ₹20,000 cap | None | ₹5,000 = 100 points | ₹25,000, only ₹20,000 counts = 400 points |
| Utilities at 1 per ₹100 | ₹2,000 = 20 points | ₹3,000 = 30 points | ₹5,000 = 50 points |
| Fuel, no points | ₹2,000 = 0 | None | None |
| Points a month | 140 | 370 | 850 |
| Points a year, 12 months | 1,680 | 4,440 | 10,200 |
| Yearly spend | ₹1,20,000 | ₹2,40,000 | ₹6,00,000 |
| Milestone points | 0 | 2,000 | 6,000 |
| Total points a year | 1,680 | 6,440 | 16,200 |
| ₹500 annual fee | Paid, ₹590 with GST | Reversed | Reversed |
Light. ₹1,20,000 a year is short of ₹1.5 lakh, so the fee stays. Each of the 1,680 points would have to be worth about ₹0.35 (₹590 divided by 1,680) for the card to pay for itself, and with no published value you can't bank on that.
Typical. ₹2,40,000 a year clears the reversal and crosses ₹2 lakh for 2,000 milestone points, so 6,440 points come with no net fee. Quarterly spends of ₹60,000 (₹20,000 times 3) fall below the ₹75,000 lounge line though, very near but no lounge is there.
Heavy. Groceries of ₹25,000 hit the ₹20,000 cap, so ₹5,000 of it earns nothing. The year brings 10,200 regular points plus 6,000 milestone points (2,000 at ₹2 lakh and 1,000 each at ₹3, ₹4, ₹5 and ₹6 lakh), 16,200 in all. At ₹1,50,000 a quarter the ₹75,000 condition is met, so 1 airport lounge visit is yours each quarter and BookMyShow switches on too.

Who can apply, and how
Salaried applicants need a monthly income of ₹20,000. Self-employed applicants needs an annual income of ₹2,40,000, the same ₹20,000 a month once divided by 12. ICICI's FAQ gives the age band as 21 to 65 years, and you must be an Indian citizen. The papers asked are proof of identity, proof of address and income proof.
You can apply on ICICI Bank's website, uploading KYC and income documents, or in the iMobile app if a card offer is showing under Pre Approved Loans/Offers. ICICI also lists a Coral card against a fixed deposit, applied for through iMobile, Net Banking or a branch, and its FD card limit is up to 90% of the deposit. That route is worth knowing if you have no salary slip, the bank's listing page FAQ says it may ask for a fixed deposit as collateral when an applicant has no salary.
What decides the outcome
Under the RBI's 2025 card Directions, ICICI has to judge your own repayment capacity and count the limits you already hold elsewhere. The RBI sets no minimum income or age, the numbers above is ICICI's own. Credit score and repayment history may also be considered; CRIF scores run from 300 to 900, with above 700 generally considered good.
If you are turned down, the bank must give the specific reasons in writing, and nobody outside ICICI can decide or promise the result. Read the one-page Key Fact Statement that come with the application before you sign. Billing disputes must be raised within 60 days of the statement date, and our ICICI Bank customer care page lists the numbers for that and for a lost card.

These are the bank's published conditions. Meeting them does not guarantee a card: approval and the credit limit are the bank's decision.
Is Coral the right first card for you?
Coral makes most sense for someone starting out with credit who earns at least the ₹20,000 a month ICICI asks for, wants a card from a large bank, and spends ₹12,500 or more a month so the fee comes back. For that person it is a easy, low-risk start.
The RuPay version adds something many entry cards don't: UPI. Paying a kirana shop or a chai stall from your credit line and earning points like a swipe is genuinely handy. Just remember UPI on a credit card only pays merchants; you cannot send money to a friend with it.
Skip it if reward value is the point for you. With no published rupee value and ₹99 + GST on each redemption, you can't tell what you're earning, and a lifetime-free card with a published value may do better on the same spends. Skip it too if your biggest bills are rent, fuel or wallet loads, because those earns nothing here.
The trade-off is simple to state. A small fee that disappears at ₹1.5 lakh a year. In return, a modest earn, some movie discounts and an airport lounge visit only in quarters where you spend ₹75,000.
Pros
- Low fee of ₹500 + GST, reversed for the year on ₹1.5 lakh of spends
- RuPay version works on UPI and earns points on UPI spends
- 1 domestic airport lounge visit a quarter after ₹75,000 of quarterly spend, plus 4 railway lounge visits a year
- Milestone bonus of up to 10,000 points a year
- RuPay card carries ₹2 lakh personal accident cover
- Low income floor of ₹20,000 a month for salaried applicants
Cons
- ICICI publishes no rupee value for a point
- ₹99 + GST charged on every redemption
- No points on rent, fuel, wallet loads or EMI, and caps on grocery, utility and transport spends
- 3.5% forex mark-up and a 3.5% currency conversion fee
- Lounge and BookMyShow offers depend on quarterly spend targets
Coral against three other starter cards
The fair comparison is with other low-fee first cards. Here how Coral stacks up against the IDFC FIRST Millennia Credit Card, the SimplySAVE SBI Card and the Kotak League Platinum Credit Card.
- IDFC FIRST Millennia has no joining or annual fee and publishes a point value of ₹0.25. Its base 3 points per ₹200 is 0.375%, and dining and travel get 10 points per ₹200, or 1.25%. Zero forex mark-up, railway lounges but no airport lounge, and UPI through an optional RuPay companion card at ₹199 + GST a year. Income asked: ₹3 lakh a year.
- SimplySAVE SBI Card costs ₹499 + taxes, reversed on ₹1,00,000 of yearly spends, a lower bar than Coral's ₹1.5 lakh. It gives 10 points per ₹150 on dining, movies, departmental stores and groceries, worth 1.67% at ₹0.25 a point and capped at 5,000 points a month, and has a RuPay version for UPI. No lounge is listed and forex is 3.5%.
- Kotak League Platinum is ₹499 + GST, waived on just ₹50,000 of retail spends a year. It gives 4 points per ₹150, or 8 in some categories and after ₹2 lakh of yearly spends, but cash value is only ₹0.07 a point (₹0.10 in the catalogue). It wants ₹5 lakh a year of income and you must live in one of its listed cities.
Where Coral pulls ahead is the airport lounge: none of the three lists one, while Coral gives a domestic visit each quarter once you spend ₹75,000. It also have railway lounges, movie offers and, on RuPay, ₹2 lakh accident cover. Where it falls behind is the unpublished point value and the 3.5% mark-up against Millennia's zero.
Who should pick which: FIRST Millennia for no fee and a known point value; SimplySAVE if groceries and dining are your main spends; League Platinum for modest spenders who want the easiest waiver; Coral for an ICICI relationship, RuPay on UPI and the odd lounge visit. Earning ₹75,000 a month or more? ICICI's Sapphiro card is the step up, and the full ICICI Bank lineup is on our bank page.
