What PIXEL Play is
PIXEL Play is HDFC's app-first cashback card. You run it from PayZapp, where you choose your billing date, the card design and, most usefully, where you earns the higher rates. It comes on Visa and RuPay, it's active, and HDFC is taking applications.
The thing to know first: PIXEL Play is not free any more. HDFC sold it as lifetime free until 31 October 2026, and that offer has ended. The fee schedule now shows ₹500 plus GST a year, with spend waivers on both the joining and renewal fee. If a friend got it free earlier, your terms will differ to theirs.
How the earning is built
- Two packs of your choice at 5%, out of Dining and Entertainment, Travel, Grocery, Electronics and Fashion. Both packs together stops at 500 CashPoints a calendar month.
- One platform at 3%, either PayZapp, Amazon or Flipkart, up to 500 a month.
- SmartBuy, HDFC's own booking portal, at 5% up to ₹500 a month.
- UPI on the RuPay card at 1% up to 500, and other eligible spends at 1% with no cap.
Packs and platform can be changed every 3 months, handy if your spending shift with the seasons, electronics before a festival and travel in the holidays. Cashback lands as CashPoints, 1 CashPoint being ₹1 of PayZapp CashPoints, not as a credit on your card statement.
PIXEL Play fees now the free offer is over
Joining and annual fees are ₹500 each, with GST on top, so ₹590 at 18% (₹500 plus ₹90). Both can be avoided by spending:
- Joining fee: waived on ₹20,000 in the first 90 days, about ₹6,667 a month for three months (₹20,000 divided by 3).
- Renewal fee: waived on ₹1,00,000 in the year, about ₹8,334 a month (₹1,00,000 divided by 12, rounded up).
For a main card both targets is easy. Someone who use it for one pack only can miss the ₹1 lakh, and then ₹590 goes out every year; ₹5,000 a month at 1% earns ₹600 a year (₹5,000 times 12 times 1%), barely more than the fee. The Pixel MITC we read doesn't state an add-on fee, and HDFC's main MITC calls add-ons lifetime free, but we couldn't confirm that covers Pixel.
Interest and penalties
Interest is 3.75% a month, which the Pixel MITC writes as 45% a year. Leave ₹12,000 of a bill unpaid for 45 days and interest come to about ₹666 (₹12,000 times 45% times 45, divided by 365, is ₹665.75), plus GST. Late fees use HDFC's slabs, for example ₹500 on a bill of ₹501 to ₹1,000 and ₹750 on ₹5,001 to ₹10,000, before GST.
Other charges
- Forex 3.5% plus GST, and 1.75% on rupee payments to merchants abroad or registered overseas since 15 May 2026.
- Cash withdrawal: 2.5% or ₹500, the higher one, plus interest from day one.
- Fuel: the 1% surcharge comes back on fills of ₹400 to ₹5,000, up to ₹250 a cycle, but not on fuel paid by UPI.
- Rent attracts 1% per transaction, capped at ₹4,999. Wallet loads outside PayZapp above ₹10,000 a month and utility bills above ₹50,000 a month also costs 1%.
- Card reissue ₹199; a bounced payment 2%, minimum ₹450.

Making the packs pay
Each 5% pack covers named brands. Dining and Entertainment is BookMyShow and Zomato, Travel is MakeMyTrip and Uber, Grocery is Blinkit and Reliance Smart Bazaar in-store, Electronics is Croma and Reliance Digital in-store, and Fashion is Nykaa and Myntra. Pick the two in which your money already goes to.
The caps is what shapes this card. The shared 500 CashPoints for both packs fills at ₹10,000 of pack spends a month (500 divided by 5%). The 3% platform fills at about ₹16,667 (500 divided by 3%), SmartBuy at ₹10,000 and UPI at ₹50,000 (500 divided by 1%). So four capped buckets give at most 2,000 CashPoints a month (4 times 500), and only the plain 1% runs without a ceiling.
Rules that trim the cashback
- A transaction under ₹100 earn nothing, and CashPoints are rounded down to whole numbers.
- No cashback on fuel, rent, government payments, wallet loads, gift cards and vouchers, EMI, cash, or on bill payments and fees.
- Amazon or Flipkart paid by RuPay UPI does not get the 3% platform rate.
- You need 1,000 CashPoints to redeem, and unused ones lapses 2 years after you earn them. No redemption fee is stated.
There is no welcome gift, and the only milestones are the two fee waivers.
Three spenders
| Monthly spends | Light, ₹10,000 | Typical, ₹30,000 | Heavy, ₹75,000 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Packs chosen | Dining and Grocery | Grocery and Fashion | Travel and Electronics |
| Pack spends at 5% | ₹4,000: 200 | ₹11,000: 500, capped from 550 | ₹17,000: 500, capped from 850 |
| Platform at 3% | Amazon ₹2,000: 60 | Flipkart ₹5,000: 150 | Amazon ₹20,000: 500, capped from 600 |
| SmartBuy at 5% | None | ₹4,000: 200 | ₹12,000: 500, capped from 600 |
| RuPay UPI at 1% | ₹2,000: 20 | ₹6,000: 60 | ₹10,000: 100 |
| Other spends at 1% | ₹2,000: 20 | ₹4,000: 40 | ₹16,000: 160 |
| CashPoints a month | 300 | 950 | 1,760 |
| CashPoints a year | 3,600 | 11,400 | 21,120 |
| Fee | Waived | Waived | Waived |
Light: 300 CashPoints a month, 3,600 a year (300 times 12), so the first redemption comes in month four, when the balance crosses 1,000 (300 times 4 is 1,200). ₹30,000 in the first 90 days (₹10,000 times 3) clears the joining waiver and ₹1,20,000 a year clears the renewal one, so all ₹3,600 is kept.
Typical: the Grocery and Fashion packs would pay 550 but stops at 500, so 50 a month is lost. The fix is buying a fashion item on Flipkart when it sell the same thing, where it earns 3%. The yearly 11,400 (950 times 12) is about 3.2% of ₹3,60,000 spends (₹30,000 times 12).
Heavy: three of the four capped buckets are full and 550 CashPoints a month go missing (350 plus 100 plus 100). The year still brings 21,120 (1,760 times 12), about 2.3% of ₹9,00,000 spends (21,120 divided by ₹9,00,000, which is ₹75,000 times 12). For this person a second cashback card for the overflow is the sensible add.

Eligibility and the two ways to apply
For the regular, unsecured card HDFC doesn't publish an age or income rule. The PIXEL Play eligibility page did not load when we checked, so we can't give you a figure. Expect the usual identity, address and income checks, and also they will look your credit report. Approval rest with HDFC, which must judge your repayment capacity under the RBI's 2025 card Directions and give reasons in writing if it declines.
The FD-backed route
No credit history or no income proof? PIXEL Play can be taken against an HDFC Bank fixed deposit instead. From HDFC's FD card FAQ:
- A deposit of ₹56,000 to ₹5,00,000, booked during the application, funded from an HDFC account or by UPI if you bank elsewhere.
- A credit limit of 90% of the deposit, so ₹50,400 on the minimum FD (90% of ₹56,000) and up to ₹4,50,000.
- No credit score or income document needed, though HDFC still run a bureau check.
- Only for people who don't already hold an HDFC Bank credit card.
It's the same PIXEL Play, only secured by your money. Our guide to secured cards explains how FD-backed cards work.
Applying
Both versions start from the Apply Now button on HDFC's card page, and the FD journey runs inside PayZapp. Keep your PAN handy, as KYC needs PAN or Form 60 with a document like a passport, driving licence or voter ID. When the card arrive, activate it within 30 days, or HDFC must take your OTP consent and close it free if you decline.

Who should take PIXEL Play
It works best for someone whose spends are spread over a few apps: a few thousand rupees in each of two pack categories, some Amazon or Flipkart orders, and UPI at the local shop. That person fill the buckets without hitting the ceilings, keeps both fee waivers, and gets 3% or more overall, as our typical example shows. It also suit people who want an HDFC card without income papers, through the FD route, if ₹56,000 can stay locked up.
Skip it if you want cashback on your bill. CashPoints sit in PayZapp, and you need 1,000 before you can redeem. Heavy spenders in one category lose out too: ₹20,000 a month on Myntra alone earns 500, not 1,000 (5% of ₹20,000), because the pack cap stop it. With no lounge, no listed insurance and 3.5% forex, it's not a travel card either.
The trade-off
Flexibility against effort. You can steer 5% toward your own habits, but you must pick packs, check them every quarter, route shopping through the right platform and open PayZapp to use what you earn. If that sound like homework, a flat-rate card from our best cashback cards list will be easier.
Pros
- Choose your own two 5% packs and change them every 3 months
- 5% on SmartBuy and 3% on PayZapp, Amazon or Flipkart, each up to 500 a month
- 1% on other eligible spends with no cap
- Both fees can be waived: ₹20,000 in 90 days for joining, ₹1 lakh a year for renewal
- FD-backed route with no credit score or income document needed
Cons
- The lifetime-free offer ended on 31 October 2026; the fee is now ₹500 plus GST
- Both 5% packs share one cap of 500 CashPoints a month
- CashPoints go to PayZapp, not your statement, with 1,000 needed to redeem
- No cashback on transactions under ₹100, fuel, rent or wallet loads
- Unsecured age and income rules are not published
- 3.5% forex markup and no lounge access
PIXEL Play next to three cashback cards
HDFC Millennia
Millennia is HDFC's other cashback card. Its CashPoints are worth ₹1 against the statement, and its 5% cap is double PIXEL Play's shared pack limit.
