Secured Credit Cards Explained: FD-Backed Limits, Costs and Catches
A secured credit card is an ordinary credit card whose limit is backed by a fixed deposit with the same bank: the bank marks a lien on the FD and gives you a limit of 80% to 100% of it. You still get a monthly bill, interest if you carry a balance and a record with the credit bureaus; the difference is that the bank can recover unpaid dues from your deposit.
In short
A secured card is worth it when you cannot qualify on income or credit history; compare the FD minimum, limit share, fee and interest rate, which vary far more than the rewards.
Best for
- Students, homemakers and new earners without income proof
- People rebuilding after late payments who can lock money in an FD
- Anyone who wants a card with a hard ceiling tied to their savings
Skip it if
- You may need the FD money soon; Axis Bank says the FD cannot be closed while the card is active
- You plan to carry a balance; most of these cards still charge 3.75% a month

What a secured credit card is
A secured card works like any other credit card at a shop counter, online, or on UPI if it is RuPay. The difference is behind the scenes: you open a fixed deposit with the bank, the bank marks a lien on it, and your limit is set as a share of that deposit instead of on your salary or credit score.
The lien is the whole trick. The FD stays yours and, as AU says of NOMO, it keep earning interest, but you cannot touch it while the card is live: Axis Bank says the FD cannot be closed while the card is active, and AU allows no partial withdrawal. If the bill goes unpaid, the bank can use the deposit to recover its dues.
How the limit is set
Across the issuer pages we read, limits run from 80% to 100% of the deposit. IDFC FIRST Bank gives 100% on FIRST WOW! and FIRST EA₹N, ICICI Bank and HDFC Bank give 90%, Axis Bank 80% to 90%, and Kotak's MITC puts Dream Different at 80%. Federal Bank's FD-backed One card add 100% of any further FD to the limit.
Who they are built for
Banks pitch these cards at people the usual approval process leave out. IDFC FIRST points students and new professionals with little or no credit history to FD cards, and Axis Bank says its FD cards need neither income proof nor a minimum credit score.
Who decides doesn't change. Issuing the card is still the bank's call under RBI rules: BOBCARD will not issue PRIME to applicants who are delinquent on CIBIL, and HDFC Bank still run a bureau check on its FD-backed Pixel card.
Working out the limit and the value
Two sums matter: the limit a deposit buys at each bank, and what the card pay back on spending you'd do anyway.
What a ₹50,000 FD gets you
Apply each bank's published share to one ₹50,000 deposit. The answers differ by up to ₹10,000, because ₹50,000 at 100% is ₹50,000 while ₹50,000 at 80% is ₹40,000.
| Card | Limit share | Limit on a ₹50,000 FD |
|---|---|---|
| IDFC FIRST WOW! | 100% | ₹50,000 |
| ICICI Bank Instant Platinum | 90% | ₹45,000 |
| Axis Bank MY Zone Easy | 80% to 90% | ₹40,000 to ₹45,000 |
| Kotak Dream Different | 80% (MITC) | ₹40,000 |
| HDFC Bank Pixel Play (FD) | 90% | Not eligible: the minimum FD is ₹56,000 |
| AU NOMO | Not published (lien on 100% of the FD) | Ask the bank |
The HDFC row are the surprise: 90% of its ₹56,000 minimum is ₹50,400, exactly the lowest limit HDFC quotes. Kotak's 811 page says up to 90% but its MITC says 80%, and we use the MITC.
Rewards on ₹10,000 a month
Now say you put ₹10,000 a month of ordinary, eligible shopping on each card. The yearly column is simply the monthly figure times 12, so ₹40 a month is ₹480 a year.
| Card | Earn rule | A month | A year |
|---|---|---|---|
| IDFC FIRST WOW! | 4 points per ₹200, ₹0.25 a point | ₹50 | ₹600 |
| AU NOMO | 2 points per ₹100, ₹0.25 a point | ₹50 | ₹600 |
| BOBCARD PRIME | 2 points per ₹100, ₹0.20 a point | ₹40 | ₹480 |
| SBI Card Unnati | 1 point per ₹100, ₹0.25 a point | ₹25 | ₹300 |
| IDFC FIRST EA₹N | 0.5% online, 1% on UPI in the IDFC FIRST app | ₹50 to ₹100 | ₹600 to ₹1,200 |
| Kotak Dream Different | 2%, only in cycles with ₹15,000 of eligible spends | ₹0 | ₹0 |
On WOW!, ₹10,000 is 50 lots of ₹200; at 4 points each that is 200 points, and at ₹0.25 a point, ₹50. The Kotak line look odd until you read the rule. At ₹15,000 a cycle the 2% is ₹300, as long as no purchase hits the ₹100 per-transaction cap, which 2% reaches at ₹5,000. From ₹25,000 it hits the ₹500 cycle cap, since 2% of ₹25,000 is ₹500. Twelve cycles at ₹15,000 bring ₹300 times 12, or ₹3,600, against a joining fee of ₹424 plus 18% GST, which come to ₹500.32, provided you claim it: unredeemed cashback lapses 30 days after it is made available.
Points also cost to redeem. WOW! and NOMO charge ₹99 plus GST per redemption, and ₹99 plus 18% is ₹116.82, so cashing ₹600 once a year leave ₹600 minus ₹116.82, or ₹483.18. Unnati needs 2,000 points before you can redeem, and at 100 points a month that is 20 months of spending.
The costs that matter on a secured card
The deposit makes the card safe for the bank, not cheap for you. Here is where the money go.
Fees
IDFC FIRST WOW! and ICICI Bank Instant Platinum are nil joining and nil annual in the MITC, and OneCard is nil for primary and add-on cards. BOBCARD's page shows zero fees on PRIME, which is missing from its fee tables. The rest charge: Axis MY Zone Easy lists ₹500 joining and ₹500 a year in its Key Fact Sheet, even if some Axis tiles show nil; Kotak's Dream Different charge ₹424 joining from 1 September 2026 with no annual fee; AU NOMO takes ₹199 once; and SBI Card Unnati waives its ₹499 annual fee for four years. IDFC FIRST EA₹N is ₹499 joining per the MITC (the ₹0 on its page is a limited-period offer), and HDFC's Pixel Play is ₹500 since its lifetime-free offer ended on 31 October 2026. GST of 18% is extra throughout.
Interest
Some issuers charge less on secured cards because the risk is lower. SBI Card's MITC lists 2.75% a month (33% a year) for secured cards against 3.75% (45%) for unsecured ones, RBL Bank lists 2.5% a month (30% a year), and Axis charges 3.4% a month (49.36% a year) on FD-secured cards. Many FD cards still sits at 3.75% a month, though, including ICICI Instant Platinum, AU NOMO, Kotak Dream Different and BOBCARD PRIME.
When things go wrong
Late fees top out at ₹1,300 at Axis, ICICI, Kotak, IDFC FIRST and AU, as on normal cards. Then the deposit: Federal Bank's terms let it liquidate the FD behind a One card if dues stay unpaid at 31 days past due (from 18 May 2025), and Axis calls its FD continuing security it may encash on default. A payment more than three days late can be reported as past due long before that happen.
Cash and forex
Cash is cheaper on two cards: WOW! charges ₹199 plus GST a withdrawal with no interest for up to 45 days, and Dream Different ₹100 per ATM withdrawal with the interest-free period intact. Elsewhere expect 2.5% (minimum ₹500) and interest from day one. On foreign spends, WOW! and EA₹N charge zero markup, NOMO 0.99%, OneCard 1%, Kotak 2%, and Axis, ICICI, BOBCARD, HDFC and SBI Card 3.5%, quite a spread for card that otherwise look alike.

- Axis Bank MY Zone Easy: FD of ₹15,000 to ₹25 lakh, 80% to 90% limit, ₹500 plus ₹500 in fees per the Key Fact Sheet.
- Kotak Dream Different: ₹10,000 FD for a year and a day under the MITC (the 811 page says 181 days), 80% limit, 2% cashback capped at ₹500 a cycle.
- ICICI Bank Instant Platinum: ₹50,000 FD for 180 days or more, 90% limit (₹45,000 to ₹5 lakh), nil fees; ICICI's own documents also mention ₹20,000 and 85%, so confirm at a branch.
- BOBCARD PRIME: ₹30,000 FD with lien and zero fees on the card page; the limit share and network is not published.
- HDFC Bank Pixel Play (FD): ₹56,000 to ₹5,00,000 FD, 90% limit, ₹500 plus GST, with a bureau check, and only for people without an HDFC Bank credit card.
- OneCard (FD-backed): FD from ₹5,000 per a 2023 OneCard blog (₹50,000 or more for metal), nil fees, and each further FD add 100% of it to the limit.
- IndiGo IDFC FIRST (FD variant): no joining fee against an FD of ₹50,000 (₹1,00,000 in one part of the page), limit equal to the FD, ₹4,999 plus GST a year from year two.
- SBI Card Unnati: an SBI FD of ₹25,000 or more and a ₹499 fee waived for four years; SBI Card names no interest rate for it and shows no online Apply button.
Since 23 September 2026 SBI FD holders can also get secured Advantage versions of ELITE, PRIME, SimplyCLICK and SimplySAVE on YONO, at the base cards' fees; SBI Card don't publish their FD amount or limit share.
How to compare two secured cards
Rewards come last here. The structure decides most of a secured card's value, so work down this list in order.
- Can you open the FD at all? Most banks want a singly held deposit and turns away tax-saver, joint, HUF and minor FDs; ICICI also wants auto-renewal and 180 days, Kotak a year and a day, AU 24 months.
- Limit share. A bank paying 100% needs a smaller deposit for the same limit. A ₹40,000 limit locks ₹40,000 at IDFC FIRST but ₹50,000 at Kotak, since ₹40,000 is 80% of ₹50,000.
- Standing fee or offer. Separate a fee that is nil in the MITC from a page banner: EA₹N's ₹0 joining is a limited-period offer, and Pixel Play's lifetime-free run ended on 31 October 2026.
- Interest. If you might carry a balance, 2.75% a month at SBI Card against 3.75% elsewhere is a gap of 1 percentage point a month, or 12 points a year (33% against 45%).
- What happens at default. Ask when the bank can encash the FD. Federal Bank's One terms say 31 days past due; most others does not publish a trigger.
- Everyday fit. A RuPay card like EA₹N works on UPI directly, while WOW! needs the FIRST Digital RuPay card at ₹199 plus GST a year.
- The way out. Ask whether the bank will later move you to an unsecured card and release the lien. No bank in our data publish that rule, so get the answer in writing.
Our FIRST WOW! vs Dream Different page runs this test on two cards that sits at opposite ends of the fee and reward rules.
Mistakes people make with secured cards
- Booking the wrong kind of FD. A tax-saver deposit won't qualify at IDFC FIRST, Axis, ICICI, Kotak or AU, and IDFC FIRST, ICICI and AU refuse joint FDs too, so read the rules before the money go in.
- Treating the limit as extra money. It is your own deposit lent back to you, so spend what you'd spend anyway and clear the full bill.
- Paying only the minimum. 3.75% of a ₹10,000 balance is ₹375 of interest in one month, and that rate is 45% a year on most of these cards.
- Letting the card sleep. A card unused for more than a year can be closed after notice, and a card never activated is not reported to the bureaus at all, so it build nothing.
- Reading "no credit check" as "no reporting". Even where a bank skips the score check at entry, a payment more than three days late can still be reported as past due.
- Breaking the FD in a hurry. Axis won't let you close the FD while the card is active, and Kotak and AU set minimum tenures. Close the card and clear the dues first, then the lien can go.
- Forgetting the fees on top. Rent, wallet, utility and education fees apply as on any card: AU NOMO charges 1% on domestic rent (minimum ₹99) and Dream Different 2% plus GST on rent.
If the aim is to rebuild a weak record, our low CIBIL score guide lay out the steps in order.
