In short
A strong FD card for someone who can put ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 a month on it and pay through Kotak's own channels, but below that spend line it returns nothing, so size both the FD and your spending before you sign up.
Best for
- New-to-credit users who will spend ₹15,000 or more in most cycles
- Kotak 811 users who pay merchants by UPI through the 811 app
- People who sometimes need cash, since ATM withdrawals keep the interest-free period
Skip it if
- You will spend less than ₹15,000 in most cycles
- You can deposit only the ₹10,000 minimum, which gives an ₹8,000 limit
- Most of your UPI payments go through third-party apps
Highlights
- FD of ₹10,000 to ₹20 lakh, limit 80% of it per the MITC
- ₹424 joining fee plus GST from 1 September 2026, no annual fee
- 2% cashback in cycles with ₹15,000 or more of eligible spends
- Caps: ₹500 a cycle, ₹200 on UPI, ₹100 a transaction
- Forex markup 2%
How Dream Different works
Dream Different, earlier called 4811 #DreamDifferent, is a RuPay card from Kotak Mahindra Bank issued against a Kotak fixed deposit through the Kotak811 app or website. The deposit goes under lien and the MITC sets your limit at 80% of it. Being RuPay, the card links to UPI, so you can pay shops by scanning there QR code.
The card was rebuild in 2026. The old reward points stopped on 1 April 2026, with points earned till 31 March redeemable only up to 30 September 2026, and the milestone offer ended the same day. From billing cycles starting September 2026 a cashback programme took over: 2% on eligible online, offline and Kotak 811 app UPI spends, but only in a cycle where those spends reach ₹15,000. The joining fee moved to ₹424 at the same time, with no waiver.
So the card is rewarding one kind of person well only: someone with savings but no income papers or credit record, who already spend ₹15,000 or more a month and will pay the bill through Kotak's digital channels, which the cashback needs. If you'll use it lightly, its value is the credit history it builds, not the cashback.
Status and other changes
- Open to applications as of 5 November 2026. On 24 April 2024 the RBI stopped Kotak issuing fresh credit cards, and lifted that ban on 12 February 2025.
- 15 April 2024 (1 June 2024 for existing holders): a 2% plus GST fee on rent payments.
- 1 April 2025: minimum FD raised to ₹10,000 from ₹5,000.
- 1 September 2026: ₹424 joining fee with no waiver, currency conversion fee cut to 2% from 3.5%, and ₹170 if you cancel within 90 days of issue.
Kotak's other cards are on our Kotak credit cards page.
Joining fee, interest and the charges you can trigger
Kotak's KFS and MITC put the joining fee at ₹424, charged on the day you activate the card. With 18% GST that's ₹500.32 (₹424 plus ₹76.32), which is why the Kotak811 FAQ quotes ₹500 including GST. No annual fee is there and add-on cards are free. Until 31 August 2026 the fee was ₹250 and waived if your limit was ₹18,000 or more on activation; that waiver are gone, though the listing tile still shows ₹250. Cancel within 90 days of issue and you pay ₹170.
With no yearly fee, the cashback only has to beat ₹500.32 once. A single capped cycle pays at most ₹500, 32 paise short (₹500.32 minus ₹500), so it takes two qualifying cycles; two at exactly ₹15,000 give ₹600 (2% of ₹15,000 is ₹300, twice).
Interest and cash
Interest is 3.75% a month, 45% a year, with an interest-free period of up to 51 days when you pay in full. Unusually, cash withdrawals share that interest-free period: no interest from the day you withdraw, only ₹100 per ATM withdrawal or fund transfer, plus 18% GST, so ₹118 (₹100 plus ₹18). Repaid by the due date, a ₹5,000 emergency withdrawal cost just that ₹118. Carry ₹8,000 for a month, though, and interest is ₹300 (3.75% of ₹8,000) plus ₹54 GST (18% of ₹300).
Late payment
Charged when nothing, or less than the minimum, is paid by the due date: nil up to ₹100, ₹100 above ₹100 to ₹500, ₹500 above ₹500 to ₹1,000, ₹600 above ₹1,000 to ₹5,000, ₹750 above ₹5,000 to ₹10,000, ₹900 above ₹10,000 to ₹25,000, ₹1,100 above ₹25,000 to ₹50,000 and ₹1,300 above ₹50,000. The Kotak811 page still says a flat ₹500, the MITC slabs is what we use. RBI rules let the late fee and a past-due report to bureaus come only once the account is more than three days past due.
Forex and category fees
- Foreign currency markup 2% in the KFS and MITC. A fee list on the Kotak811 page shows 0.035%, which conflict; we use the MITC.
- Currency conversion on rupee payments abroad: 2% from 1 September 2026, down from 3.5%.
- Rent: 2% plus GST on every payment. Education through third-party apps: 1% on every payment.
- Utilities 1% once a cycle passes ₹35,000, fuel 1% past ₹25,000, wallet loads and online skill-based gaming 1% past ₹10,000 each.
- Over-limit charge nil; card replacement ₹100.
The fuel surcharge waiver of 1% covers fills of ₹500 to ₹4,000, up to ₹3,500 in a card anniversary year, and the railway surcharge waiver (1.8% online, 2.5% at the counter) goes up to ₹500 a year.

The 2% cashback and its three caps
From cycles starting September 2026 the card pays 2% cashback on eligible online, offline and UPI spends, the UPI part only when you pay through the Kotak 811 app. Three conditions decide if a cycle pays anything: eligible spends of at least ₹15,000 in that billing cycle, the previous statement's minimum paid through Kotak's digital channels, and no overdue on the account.
Then the caps bite. Total cashback stop at ₹500 a cycle, which you reach at ₹25,000 of eligible spends (₹500 divided by 2%). Within that, UPI cashback stops at ₹200, reached at ₹10,000 of UPI (₹200 divided by 2%), and no single transaction pays more than ₹100, so anything above ₹5,000 in one go (₹100 divided by 2%) earns just ₹100.
The cliff at ₹15,000 is the part to understand: a cycle just short of it earn nothing, while ₹15,000 exactly earns ₹300 (2% of ₹15,000). Fuel, rent, wallet loads, ATM cash, EMI, gaming apps, gold, insurance, money transfers, wholesale clubs, betting, political donations, B2B merchant codes and UPI through other apps are all excluded, and they don't count towards the ₹15,000 either.
Cashback goes to your Kotak savings account through the 811 app, is ready by the 15th of the next month and expires if not redeemed within 30 calendar days, so set a reminder or a whole cycle's money can loose. There are no welcome or milestone benefits now.
Three spenders, worked out
Light: ₹10,000 FD, ₹7,000 a month. The limit is ₹8,000 (80% of ₹10,000), below the ₹15,000 line unless you pay mid-cycle and spend again. At ₹7,000 the cashback is ₹0 all year, so year one is ₹500.32 in the red. The gain here is a credit record, not money.
Typical: ₹25,000 FD, ₹18,000 a month. Limit ₹20,000 (80% of ₹25,000). Spends: ₹8,000 online, ₹4,000 in shops, ₹4,000 by UPI in the 811 app, ₹2,000 on fuel. Eligible spends are ₹16,000 (₹8,000 plus ₹4,000 plus ₹4,000; fuel is out), above the line, so 2% give ₹320 a cycle, the UPI part ₹80 (2% of ₹4,000), well under its cap. Twelve cycles make ₹3,840 (₹320 times 12), or ₹3,339.68 after the joining fee (₹3,840 minus ₹500.32). The fuel waiver hands back ₹20 a month (1% of ₹2,000).
Heavy: ₹1,00,000 FD, ₹45,000 a month. Limit ₹80,000 (80% of ₹1,00,000). Spends: ₹20,000 online including a ₹12,000 phone, ₹10,000 in shops, ₹12,000 by 811 UPI, ₹3,000 fuel. Eligible ₹42,000 (₹20,000 plus ₹10,000 plus ₹12,000). Plain 2% would be ₹840 (2% of ₹42,000), but the phone pays ₹100 instead of ₹240 (2% of ₹12,000), UPI pays ₹200 instead of ₹240, and the cycle stops at ₹500 anyway. So ₹500 a cycle, ₹6,000 a year (₹500 times 12), an effective 1.19% (₹500 divided by ₹42,000).
| Spender | FD and limit | Eligible spends a cycle | Cashback a cycle | Cashback a year | Joining fee with GST |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Light | ₹10,000 and ₹8,000 | ₹7,000 | ₹0 | ₹0 | ₹500.32 |
| Typical | ₹25,000 and ₹20,000 | ₹16,000 | ₹320 | ₹3,840 | ₹500.32 |
| Heavy | ₹1,00,000 and ₹80,000 | ₹42,000 | ₹500 | ₹6,000 | ₹500.32 |
The sweet spot is ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 of eligible spends each cycle. Below it the card pays nothing, above it the extra spending earn nothing.

Who can get Dream Different and on what FD
The main cardholder has to be 18 to 75, add-on holders 18 or older. You must be an Indian resident, NRIs can apply only through an offline process. No income proof is asked, salaried or self-employed, but your PAN must be updated and operative.
The FD conditions, and where Kotak's pages differ
- Minimum deposit ₹10,000 (since 1 April 2025), maximum ₹20 lakh, in individual term deposits only. Tax-saver, NRI, sweep-in, non-withdrawable and minors' deposits doesn't qualify.
- Limit: the MITC says 80% of the deposit, the Kotak811 page says up to 90%. We use 80%.
- Tenure: the MITC asks for at least one year and one day in auto-renewal mode, while the Kotak811 page says 181 days. Plan on the MITC.
- The deposit stays under lien while the card is open.
Working back from the cashback line. To have ₹15,000 of room in one cycle you need a ₹15,000 limit, so an FD of ₹18,750 (₹15,000 divided by 80%). To reach the ₹500 cap without paying mid-cycle you need ₹25,000 of limit, so an FD of ₹31,250 (₹25,000 divided by 80%).
Applying
Apply in the Kotak811 app or on the Kotak811 website: give your PAN, complete KYC if you're new to Kotak, book the FD and accept the lien. Kotak still make its own call on every application, and RBI rules ask it to judge your independent financial means and to give written reasons for a refusal. You can also change your billing cycle at least once under RBI rules, handy for matching the cashback cycle to your salary or income date. Contact numbers are on our Kotak customer care page.

Is Dream Different right for you?
Pick it if you have ₹25,000 or more to park, spend ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 a month on things other than fuel and rent, and don't mind paying through Kotak's app. That person gets ₹3,600 to ₹6,000 a year (₹300 to ₹500 a cycle, times 12), far more than the flat 0.5% on cards like FIRST WOW! and NOMO. The interest-free cash withdrawal is a quiet bonus for anybody which needs emergency cash now and then.
Skip it if your monthly spend will stay well under ₹15,000, if you can spare only the ₹10,000 minimum, or if most of your UPI goes through other apps. Think twice if you pay rent by card, at 2% plus GST a ₹15,000 rent payment costs ₹354 (2% of ₹15,000 is ₹300, plus ₹54 GST at 18%) and earns nothing.
The trade-offs
You pay ₹500.32 once and get cashback that's generous inside a narrow band and zero outside it. The 2% forex markup is lower than the 3.5% on many cards but not zero. And the rules tie you to Kotak: cashback needs the minimum paid through its digital channels, UPI cashback needs its app, and the money lands in a Kotak savings account where it expire after 30 days if left unclaimed.
Pros
- 2% cashback in cycles with ₹15,000 or more of eligible spends, up to ₹500 a cycle
- FD from ₹10,000, with no income proof
- No annual fee; the ₹424 joining fee is the only fixed cost
- ATM cash keeps the interest-free period, at ₹100 a withdrawal plus GST
- RuPay card usable on UPI, with cashback on UPI through the Kotak 811 app
- Forex markup of 2%, lower than the 3.5% on many entry cards
Cons
- No cashback at all in a cycle below ₹15,000 of eligible spends
- Limit is 80% of the FD, so the ₹10,000 minimum gives only ₹8,000
- Cashback expires 30 days after it is made available
- 2% plus GST fee on rent payments
- ₹170 fee if you cancel within 90 days of issue
- Kotak's own pages disagree on limit share, FD tenure and forex markup
Dream Different against other FD cards
All three take a deposit instead of income proof, but they pay back in very different ways. The side-by-side table below has the numbers.
Dream Different or IDFC FIRST WOW!
FIRST WOW! has no fee at all, a limit of 100% of a ₹20,000-plus FD, zero forex markup and a flat 0.5% in points with no spend floor. Dream Different pays four times that rate between ₹15,000 and ₹25,000 a cycle, but nothing below. Light spenders and travellers should take WOW!, steady ₹15,000-plus spenders does better with Kotak. We set the pair side by side in FIRST WOW! vs Dream Different.
Dream Different or AU NOMO
AU NOMO costs ₹199 plus GST once, needs a ₹20,000 FD and earns 2 points per ₹100 at ₹0.25 each (0.5%), with quarterly milestone points and 2 domestic lounge visits a quarter after ₹50,000 of spends. Its 0.99% markup is more better than Kotak's 2%. NOMO suits travellers; Kotak suits people after straight cashback.
Dream Different or Axis MY Zone Easy
Axis MY Zone Easy starts at a ₹15,000 FD but costs ₹500 a year plus GST, and its only rupee reward is 25% movie cashback up to ₹1,000 a calendar year. Unless films is your main spend, Kotak gives more back. Other choices are on the credit cards hub.
