IDFC FIRST WOW! vs Kotak Dream Different: Which FD Credit Card Wins
Both are credit cards backed by a fixed deposit, so neither asks for income proof, but they suit different people. IDFC FIRST WOW! needs a bigger FD of ₹20,000 yet gives a limit of 100% of it, charges no fee and no forex markup, and pays about 0.5% in points; Kotak's Dream Different starts at a ₹10,000 FD but lends only 80% of it, costs ₹424 plus GST to join, and pays 2% cashback in any billing cycle with ₹15,000 of eligible spends, up to ₹500.
In short
Dream Different pays far more to anyone who spends ₹15,000 or more a cycle, while FIRST WOW! is cheaper to start, lends the full FD and costs nothing abroad.

Two FD cards, built for different first steps
A secured card is the usual way in when you have no credit history or no income papers: you park money in a fixed deposit, the bank gives a card against it, and every bill you pays on time adds to your record. IDFC FIRST WOW! and Kotak Dream Different both work this way, but the deposit rules, the costs and the rewards pull in opposite directions.
The short verdict. If you will spend ₹15,000 or more in most billing cycles, Dream Different's 2% cashback is worth several times what WOW! pays. If you'll spend less, want the limit to equal your deposit, or will use the card abroad, WOW! is the more cheaper and simpler card.
Who each card suits
- FIRST WOW!: students and first jobbers aged 18 to 80 who can put ₹20,000 or more in an IDFC FIRST Bank FD. It runs on Visa, and for UPI you add the FIRST Digital RuPay card at ₹199 plus GST a year.
- Dream Different: people aged 18 to 75 who are comfortable with Kotak's 811 app, can start with ₹10,000 in a Kotak FD, and will spend enough each cycle to earn the cashback. It's a RuPay card, so it work on UPI directly.
The three numbers that matter on any FD card
- The FD minimum: ₹20,000 for WOW!, ₹10,000 for Dream Different.
- The share you can spend: 100% of the FD on WOW!, 80% on Dream Different under Kotak's MITC.
- What it costs: nothing to hold WOW!, ₹424 plus GST once for Dream Different, plus interest on either if you don't pay in full.
Recent changes
Dream Different was rebuilt this year. Its reward points programme and milestone ended on 1 April 2026, and from 1 September 2026 came a ₹424 joining fee with no waiver, a ₹170 fee for cancelling within 90 days, a 2% currency conversion fee and the new 2% cashback for billing cycles starting September 2026. Kotak also raised the minimum FD from ₹5,000 to ₹10,000 on 1 April 2025. IDFC FIRST moved all its cards to zero forex markup on 9 September 2026, and WOW! is one of the few that keeps earning points on international spends after 26 October 2026. Both cards are active.
FD minimums, limit shares and what you pay
The deposit side
| FD rule | IDFC FIRST WOW! | Kotak Dream Different |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum FD | ₹20,000 | ₹10,000 |
| Limit as share of FD | 100% | 80% (MITC) |
| Limit at the minimum FD | ₹20,000 | ₹8,000 |
| Maximum | FD and limit up to ₹10,00,000 | FD up to ₹20 lakh |
| FD tenure | Not stated on the card page or MITC | One year and a day, in auto-renewal (MITC) |
| FDs not accepted | Joint, HUF, minors, tax-saver, flexi or auto-sweep | Tax-saver, NRI, sweep-in, non-withdrawable, minors |
The lower minimum on Dream Different look friendlier, but the 80% share eats into it. To get a ₹50,000 limit you need a ₹50,000 FD with IDFC FIRST and a ₹62,500 FD with Kotak (₹50,000 divided by 80%). Kotak's 811 page says "up to 90%" and a tenure of 181 days, but its MITC says 80% and one year and a day, and we use the MITC, which is the binding document. At the top end, Kotak's ₹20 lakh FD give a ₹16 lakh limit (80% of ₹20 lakh), while WOW! stops at ₹10,00,000.
The cost side
| Charge | IDFC FIRST WOW! | Kotak Dream Different |
|---|---|---|
| Joining and annual fee | Nil and nil | ₹424 + GST joining, no annual fee |
| Interest | 0.71% to 3.85% a month, set per cardholder; 3.99% if the minimum is missed | 3.75% a month, 45% a year |
| Late fee | 15% of the amount due, minimum ₹100, maximum ₹1,300 | Slabs from nil to ₹1,300 |
| Cash withdrawal | ₹199 + GST each, no interest up to 45 days | ₹100 each, within the interest-free period |
| Forex markup | 0% | 2% |
| Rent | 1%, minimum ₹249 | 2% + GST |
| Cancellation within 90 days | None stated | ₹170 |
With GST, Dream Different's joining fee is ₹500.32 (₹424 plus ₹76.32), which is why the 811 FAQ calls it ₹500 including GST. Kotak charge it on the day you activate the card. WOW! has no fee to think of, though UPI needs the ₹199 plus GST RuPay add-on, ₹234.82 a year.
Interest is close at the top. ₹10,000 carried for 30 days costs about ₹380 on WOW! at 46.2% a year (₹10,000 times 46.2% times 30, divided by 365) and about ₹370 on Dream Different at 45%. IDFC may sets yours lower, from 0.71% a month. Late fees works differently: on ₹2,000 due WOW! charges ₹300 (15%) and Dream Different ₹600; on ₹8,000 due it's ₹1,200 against ₹750. So with WOW! a small miss cost less and a bigger one costs more.
Smaller charges: ₹15,000 of rent costs ₹293.82 on WOW! (the ₹249 minimum plus GST) and ₹354 on Dream Different (2% is ₹300, plus GST). Utility bills draw 1% above ₹20,000 a cycle on WOW! and above ₹35,000 on Dream Different. Fuel draws 1% above ₹30,000 on WOW! and ₹25,000 on Dream Different. Over-limit charges are nil on both.
Points against cashback, worked through
How WOW! earns
WOW! gives 4 Reward Points per ₹200 on online, offline and international spends, at ₹0.25 a point, so ₹1 on ₹200 or 0.5%. Insurance, utilities, FASTag and railway earn 1 point per ₹200. Hotels booked through FIRST Rewards Gallery in the IDFC app earns 10% bonus points and flights 5%, up to 8,000 bonus points a month. Nothing on fuel, EMIs, cash or transactions under ₹200, and points come only on spends up to your limit in a cycle. Skip the minimum due and that cycle's points is cancelled. Every redemption costs ₹99 plus GST, ₹116.82, and points last 24 months.
How Dream Different earns
Kotak pays 2% cashback on eligible spends, online, offline and UPI through the Kotak 811 app, but only in billing cycles where those spends reach ₹15,000. Three cap apply: ₹500 a cycle in total, ₹200 a cycle from UPI, and ₹100 on any single transaction. That means cashback maxes out at ₹25,000 of spend in a cycle (₹500 divided by 2%), and a transaction above ₹5,000 adds nothing extra past ₹100. You also has to pay the previous statement's minimum due through Kotak's digital channels and have no overdue.
The cashback is credited to your Kotak savings account through the 811 app, available by the 15th of the next month, and it expires if you don't redeem within 30 days. Wallet loads, fuel, rent, cash, EMIs, gaming, gold, insurance, wholesale clubs and UPI through other apps don't count. The old points from before April 2026 could be redeemed only till 30 September 2026, so they are gone now.
One trap with the minimum FD. A ₹10,000 deposit gives a ₹8,000 limit, below the ₹15,000 you must spend to earn anything. To spend ₹15,000 in a cycle without paying mid-cycle, you'd want an FD of at least ₹18,750 (₹15,000 divided by 80%).
Three users, both cards
| Per year | Student: ₹6,000 a month | New earner: ₹20,000 a month | Traveller: ₹30,000 a month plus a ₹40,000 trip |
|---|---|---|---|
| FD placed in each | Each card's minimum | ₹50,000 | ₹1,00,000 |
| Limit | ₹20,000 WOW!, ₹8,000 Dream Different | ₹50,000 WOW!, ₹40,000 Dream Different | ₹1,00,000 WOW!, ₹80,000 Dream Different |
| WOW! points | 1,080 | 4,080 | 6,920 |
| WOW! value after one redemption | ₹153.18 | ₹903.18 | ₹1,613.18 |
| Dream Different cashback | Nil | ₹4,800 | ₹6,000 |
| Dream Different forex cost | None | None | ₹944 |
| Dream Different net | Nil | ₹4,800 | ₹5,056 |
Student. On WOW!, ₹4,000 of shopping is 20 lots of ₹200 at 4 points, 80, and ₹2,000 of phone and utility bills is 10 lots at 1, so 90 a month and 1,080 a year, ₹270, or ₹153.18 after one ₹116.82 redemption. On Dream Different ₹6,000 never reach ₹15,000, so there is no cashback at all, and in year one you are ₹500.32 down for the joining fee.
New earner. WOW! earns 320 on ₹16,000 of shopping (80 lots at 4) and 20 on ₹4,000 of bills, 340 a month, 4,080 a year, ₹1,020, so ₹903.18 net. Dream Different pays 2% of ₹20,000, ₹400 a cycle, inside the ₹500 cap if no single bill is over ₹5,000, so ₹4,800 a year. That is more than five time WOW!.
Traveller. WOW! earns 480 on ₹24,000 of shopping and 30 on ₹6,000 of bills, 510 a month or 6,120 a year, plus 800 on the ₹40,000 trip (200 lots at 4) with zero markup: 6,920 points, ₹1,730, so ₹1,613.18 net. Dream Different's 2% of ₹30,000 would be ₹600, capped at ₹500, so ₹6,000 a year; the trip adds no cashback because the cycle cap is already hit, and costs ₹944 in markup (2% of ₹40,000 is ₹800, plus 18% GST). Net ₹5,056. The trip month's ₹70,000 stays inside both limits: ₹1,00,000 on WOW! and ₹80,000 (80% of ₹1,00,000) on Dream Different.
Benefits: forex, insurance, fuel and UPI
Neither card is a perks card. No lounge on either; IDFC keeps lounge visits for FIRST WOW! Black, which is a different card, and Kotak publishes no lounge benefit for Dream Different. What separates them is the travel and protection side.
Spending abroad
WOW! charges no forex markup and no currency conversion markup, and it still earns 4 points per ₹200 on international spends after 26 October 2026, when most IDFC FIRST cards stopped. Dream Different adds 2% plus GST on foreign currency spends, and its currency conversion fee is 2% since 1 September 2026. On ₹1 lakh spent abroad in a year that is ₹2,360 on Dream Different (₹2,000 plus ₹360 of GST) and nothing on WOW!. Kotak's 811 page shows the forex markup as 0.035%, but the KFS and MITC both say 2%, and we have went with the MITC.
So for a student going overseas, or anyone who shop from foreign websites, WOW! is clearly the better card. For someone who spends abroad once in a while, the 2% cashback at home outweigh the markup, as the traveller example showed.
Insurance and protection
- WOW!: card liability cover up to ₹25,000, personal accident insurance of ₹2 lakh and purchase protection of ₹25,000.
- Dream Different: Kotak does not publish any insurance cover for it.
Fuel and trains
WOW! waives the 1% fuel surcharge on fills of ₹200 to ₹5,000, up to ₹200 a statement cycle. Dream Different waives it on ₹500 to ₹4,000, up to ₹3,500 in an anniversary year, and also refunds the railway surcharge (1.8% online, 2.5% at the counter) up to ₹500 a year. Neither card earns anything on the fuel itself.
UPI and everyday use
- Dream Different is a RuPay card, so it links to UPI directly. UPI payments made through the Kotak 811 app earns cashback, capped at ₹200 a cycle; UPI through other apps earns none.
- WOW! is a Visa card. For UPI you add the FIRST Digital RuPay card at ₹199 plus GST a year, which earns 3 points per ₹200 on UPI payments above ₹2,000 and 1 point at or below ₹2,000.
- Cash: WOW! lets you draw up to 100% of the FD at ATMs, with no interest for up to 45 days and ₹199 plus GST a withdrawal. Dream Different charges ₹100 a withdrawal and also gives cash advances the interest-free period. Taking cash on a credit card is still a costly price habit.
Neither card has a welcome gift or milestone now. Dream Different's milestone ended on 1 April 2026.
Eligibility and how to apply
Both banks says no income proof is needed, because the deposit backs the limit. That make these two of the realistic routes for students, homemakers, freelancers with irregular income and anyone with a thin or no credit file.
| Rule | IDFC FIRST WOW! | Kotak Dream Different |
|---|---|---|
| Age | 18 to 80 | 18 to 75 (add-on 18 and above) |
| Residency | Indian citizen with a permanent address in India; NRIs with an NRE FD of ₹25,000 or more | Indian residents; NRIs only through an offline process |
| Income proof | Not required | Not required |
| Credit history | Not needed | No credit checks, says the 811 page |
| Deposit | Singly held IDFC FIRST Bank FD of ₹20,000 or more | Individual Kotak term deposit of ₹10,000 or more, marked under lien |
| Documents | KYC; the card page lists no others | PAN updated and operative; KYC for new customers |
How the application works
IDFC FIRST runs the whole thing online through its website or app with Video KYC, opening the FD online as part of it, or you can go to a branch. Kotak takes Dream Different applications through the Kotak811 app or website. Under RBI's KYC rules a Video KYC call counts the same as a face-to-face check, which is why both can be done from home.
What the RBI rules mean for an FD card
A secured card is still a credit card under the RBI's 2025 Directions. You must give explicit consent before it is issued, you get a one-page Key Fact Statement, and if you don't activate the card within 30 days the bank must seek your OTP consent, then close it free of cost within seven working days if you don't give it. The new account isn't reported to credit bureaus before activation. Since 1 July 2026 lenders send bureau updates as on the 9th, 16th, 23rd and last day of each month, so your repayment record reach the bureaus four times a month.
On Experian's 300 to 900 scale a score above 750 is generally seen as good, and a person with no record gets an "NH" report from CRIF. A secured card used lightly and paid in full is a sensible way for moving off that. If you're starting from scratch, our guide on getting a card with no credit history goes step by step, and for repairing a weak score see cards with a low CIBIL score. Even for FD cards the issue is the bank's decision.
Which FD card should you open?
Start with how much you will actually spend each billing cycle, because that one number decide most of this comparison.
Choose Kotak Dream Different if
- You'll spend ₹15,000 to ₹25,000 in most cycles. In our new-earner example it paid ₹4,800 a year against WOW!'s ₹903.18.
- You want a RuPay card on UPI without an add-on, and are happy to use the Kotak 811 app for UPI and for redeeming cashback within 30 days.
- You can only spare ₹10,000 now, and a ₹8,000 limit is enough to start, knowing you'll need a bigger FD to qualify for cashback.
- You don't mind paying ₹500.32 once to join.
Choose IDFC FIRST WOW! if
- You'll spend under ₹15,000 a cycle, where Dream Different pays nothing.
- You wants every rupee of the deposit as limit, and no joining or annual fee at all.
- You'll use the card abroad or on foreign websites often, with 0% markup and points still earned.
- You want the insurance covers, or might be an NRI with an NRE deposit.
When neither is right
If you already earn and have a decent credit record, an unsecured card free your savings; our best cards for beginners covers those. If you need the FD money within a year, keep it free, because Kotak's terms ask for a deposit of one year and a day and the deposit sits under lien. For every FD option side by side, including Axis, ICICI and SBI Card's versions, read our secured credit cards guide.
The IDFC FIRST Bank and Kotak hubs list both banks' other cards, the credit cards hub explains how cards work, and the card finder can suggest FD-backed cards if you choose no income proof. Whichever you take, pay the full bill each month, the interest on these is not small just because a deposit stand behind it.
