A BPCL card and an HPCL card: start with your pump
These both are fuel co-brands, and the first question is not which is better but which pump you pass on the way to work. The BPCL SBI Card OCTANE pays 25 Reward Points per ₹100 at BPCL, which is 6.25% at ₹0.25 a point, plus 10 points per ₹100 on groceries, departmental stores, dining and movies. The ICICI Bank HPCL Super Saver Credit Card pays 4% cashback at HPCL and on the HP Pay app, and 20 points per ₹100 on groceries, utilities and departmental stores. Use either one at the other company pump and the fuel reward vanish.
The verdict in two sentences. A BPCL driver who spends ₹2 lakh a year on the card does much more better with OCTANE, because its caps are higher and its fee gets reversed. An HPCL user with fuel under ₹5,000 a month, or anyone wanting a cheap first fuel card, is better off with the ICICI card.
The caps decide more than the rates
OCTANE's fuel points stop at 2,500 a statement cycle, which is ₹10,000 of fuel (2,500 divided by 25, times ₹100) and ₹625 of value (2,500 times ₹0.25). HPCL Super Saver's 4% stops at ₹200 a month, which is reached at just ₹5,000 of fuel (₹200 divided by 4%). So for the long-distance driver, the ICICI card run out of steam at half the spend.
Changes to know
- OCTANE: rent stopped earning points on 15 April 2024; since 10 January 2026 its lounge visits work only at lounges on SBI Card's "Set A" list; and from 1 December 2026 SBI Card charges 1% on total fuel spends above ₹50,000 in a billing cycle.
- HPCL Super Saver: rent and wallet loads stopped earning on 5 February 2024, lounge access needs ₹75,000 of quarterly spend from 1 January 2025, and transport points are capped at ₹10,000 a cycle from 1 February 2026.
Fees: ₹1,499 against ₹500, and very different waivers
OCTANE costs ₹1,499 plus GST to join and the same every year, which is ₹1,768.82 with 18% GST (₹1,499 plus ₹269.82). The renewal fee is reversed if you spent ₹2,00,000 in the previous card year, about ₹16,667 a month. HPCL Super Saver costs ₹500 plus GST, so ₹590, and from the second anniversary year it is waived on ₹1,50,000 of spends, ₹12,500 a month (₹1,50,000 divided by 12). A add-on is free on OCTANE but ₹199 on the ICICI card.
| Charge | BPCL SBI Card OCTANE | ICICI HPCL Super Saver |
|---|---|---|
| Joining and annual fee | ₹1,499 + GST each | ₹500 + GST each |
| Fee waiver | Renewal reversed on ₹2 lakh | Waived on ₹1.5 lakh, from year 2 |
| Interest | 3.75% a month (45% a year) | 3.75% a month (45% a year) |
| Late fee on a ₹20,000 bill | ₹950 | ₹900 |
| Fuel fee | 1% of total fuel above ₹50,000 a cycle, from 1 December 2026 | 1% on a fuel transaction above ₹10,000 |
| Rent | ₹199 + taxes a payment | 1% fee |
| Wallet loads | 1% on each load above ₹1,000 | 1% on loads of ₹5,000 or more |
| Redemption fee | ₹99 on statement credit and physical items | ₹99 + GST a redemption |
| Forex mark-up | 3.5% | 3.5% |
The fuel fees matter for this pair specially. ICICI charges 1% on any single fuel transaction above ₹10,000, so a truck owner or someone filling a big SUV tank in one go pays it. SBI Card's new fee from 1 December 2026 only bite when all fuel in a cycle crosses ₹50,000, far above what OCTANE rewards anyway.
Rest everything is close only. Both charge 3.75% a month, 2.5% or at least ₹500 on cash withdrawals and a 3.5% forex mark-up. SBI Card adds ₹100 to the late fee when the minimum is missed two cycles running, and charges ₹250 for paying cash at a branch against ICICI's ₹150. OCTANE's ₹99 redemption fee is not stated for instant fuel redemption at BPCL, the way most people uses the points.
Rewards: how far each card's fuel rate goes
BPCL SBI Card OCTANE
- 25 points per ₹100 on BPCL fuel and lubricants, up to 2,500 points a statement cycle, with no minimum fill.
- 25 points per ₹100 on Bharat Gas LPG booked on its website or app, up to 500 points a cycle.
- 10 points per ₹100 on groceries, departmental stores, movies and dining, up to 7,500 points a month, though Metro Cash and Carry and Walmart don't get the higher rate.
- 1 point per ₹100 on other retail spends; nothing on non-BPCL fuel, wallet loads, rent or fuel paid by UPI.
A point is worth ₹0.25, and 4 points gives ₹1 of free fuel at a BPCL pump, with no minimum for instant redemption. Points lapses at the end of the second year after the year earned.
ICICI HPCL Super Saver
- 4% cashback at HPCL pumps and on the HP Pay app, capped at ₹200 a month, credited to the statement.
- An extra 1.5% as Happy Coins in the HP Pay wallet when you pay through the HP Pay app.
- 20 points per ₹100 on groceries, departmental stores and utility, telecom, government and tax payments, capped at 400 points a cycle, which is reached at ₹2,000 of spend.
- 2 points per ₹100 elsewhere, and no points on fuel, rent or wallet loads.
ICICI publishes no rupee value per point, but it calls the 20 points per ₹100 a 5% benefit, which only work out if a point is ₹0.25. We use that figure, but treat it as ICICI's wording rather than a published rate. Points last 3 years.
Three spend profiles, each card at its own pump
Fills are ₹4,000 or less and paid by swiping the card, so the surcharge waiver apply on both. Fees are for a renewal year with GST, and ICICI's bucket points above its 400 cap are counted as nothing extra.
| Monthly spend | Light: ₹15,000 | Typical: ₹25,000 | Heavy: ₹40,000 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fuel at the card's own pump | ₹3,000 | ₹6,000 | ₹12,000 |
| Groceries | ₹4,000 | ₹6,000 | ₹8,000 |
| Dining | ₹1,000 | ₹3,000 | ₹4,000 |
| Phone and power bills | ₹2,000 | ₹3,000 | ₹4,000 |
| Other spends | ₹5,000 | ₹7,000 | ₹12,000 |
| OCTANE, a month | ₹360 | ₹685 | ₹1,065 |
| HPCL Super Saver, a month | ₹280 | ₹410 | ₹500 |
| OCTANE, a year with vouchers, after fee | ₹2,551.18 | ₹10,220 | ₹14,780 |
| HPCL Super Saver, a year after fee | ₹3,360 | ₹4,920 | ₹6,000 |
Light. OCTANE earns 750 points on fuel, 500 on ₹5,000 of groceries and dining, 20 on bills and 50 on the rest, so 1,320 points, ₹330, plus a ₹30 waiver (1% of ₹3,000): ₹360 a month, ₹4,320 a year. Yearly spend of ₹1,80,000 (₹15,000 times 12) misses the ₹2 lakh mark, so the ₹1,768.82 fee stays and the net is ₹2,551.18. The HPCL card gives ₹120 cashback (4% of ₹3,000), a ₹30 waiver, 400 capped points on ₹6,000 of groceries and bills and 120 points on ₹6,000 of dining and other spends, which is 520 points or ₹130: ₹280 a month, ₹3,360 a year, fee waived. At this level the cheap card win.
Typical. OCTANE: 1,500 fuel points, 900 on ₹9,000 of groceries and dining, 30 on bills and 70 on the rest make exactly 2,500 points, ₹625, plus a ₹60 waiver, so ₹685 a month and ₹8,220 a year. ₹3,00,000 of yearly spend (₹25,000 times 12) reverses the fee and earns the ₹2,000 e-gift voucher, total ₹10,220. HPCL: 4% of ₹6,000 is ₹240 but the cap is ₹200, the waiver is ₹60, and 400 plus 200 points are ₹150, so ₹410 a month (₹200 plus ₹60 plus ₹150) or ₹4,920 a year.
Heavy. OCTANE's fuel points hit the 2,500 cap (₹12,000 would earn 3,000), groceries and dining add 1,200 on ₹12,000, bills 40 and the rest 120, so 3,860 points or ₹965, and the waiver stops at its ₹100 cap: ₹1,065 a month, ₹12,780 a year, plus the ₹2,000 voucher, ₹14,780. HPCL: ₹200 of cashback, a ₹120 waiver and 720 points (400 plus 320) worth ₹180, so ₹500 a month or ₹6,000 a year. ICICI states no monthly cap on its waiver, if one applies the figure would be lower.
Benefits: surcharge waivers, lounges, covers and welcome points
Fuel surcharge waiver
OCTANE waives the 1% surcharge at BPCL on fills up to ₹4,000, but only when you swipe the card at the machine, and only up to ₹100 a statement cycle. Pay by UPI with the RuPay card and you get neither waiver nor points, a detail many drivers learns the hard way. HPCL Super Saver waives 1% at HPCL on fills of ₹400 to ₹4,000, on top of the 4% cashback, but HP Pay wallet loads don't qualify for it.
Lounges
OCTANE gives 4 complimentary domestic lounge visits a calendar year, at most 1 a quarter, with no spend condition, but since 10 January 2026 only at lounges on SBI Card's Set A list, which covers 16 lounges in 8 cities. HPCL Super Saver gives 1 domestic visit a quarter, and only after ₹75,000 of spend in the previous quarter, so in our heavy profile with ₹1,20,000 a quarter (₹40,000 times 3) you would qualify and in the others not.
Covers and extras
- OCTANE includes fraud liability cover of ₹1 lakh. HPCL Super Saver's RuPay version carries personal accident cover of up to ₹2 lakh and 24/7 roadside assistance, though the assistance need the fee to be paid.
- Movies: OCTANE earns 10 points per ₹100 on movie tickets. The ICICI card gives 25% off up to ₹100 twice a month on BookMyShow and INOX, with BookMyShow needing ₹25,000 of quarterly spend.
- Cooking gas: only OCTANE give reward on Bharat Gas bookings, at 25 points per ₹100 up to 500 points a cycle.
Welcome and milestone benefits
OCTANE credits 6,000 bonus points, worth ₹1,500, within 30 days of paying the annual fee, and an e-gift voucher of ₹2,000 from Aditya Birla Fashion, Yatra or Hush Puppies on ₹3 lakh of yearly spend. HPCL Super Saver gives 2,000 points after 2 statement cycles if the joining fee is paid and ₹5,000 is spent within 45 days, worth ₹500 on ICICI's own 5% wording (2,000 times ₹0.25). No milestone is there on the ICICI card.
Both are RuPay cards that work on UPI and both charge 3.5% abroad, so neither are a travel card. For other pumps, see our IndianOil HDFC Bank vs IndianOil Axis Bank comparison.
Eligibility: one bank publishes an income floor, the other doesn't
| Rule | BPCL SBI Card OCTANE | ICICI HPCL Super Saver |
|---|---|---|
| Age, salaried | 21 minimum; maximum given as 60 and as 70 | 21 to 65 years |
| Age, self-employed | Above 25 for online applications | 21 to 65 years |
| Income | Not published by SBI Card | ₹20,000 a month salaried; ₹2,40,000 a year self-employed |
| Documents | PAN, masked Aadhaar or address proof, income proof if asked | Identity, address and income proof |
SBI Card publish no minimum income for any of its cards, OCTANE included, and its own eligibility page gives the maximum age as 60 in one place and 70 in another, so check with the bank if you are near either. It asks for a stable income, prefers a credit score between 750 and 900, and needs your home to be in a location SBI Card services. Retired pensioners above 40 can also apply online. You can apply on SBI Card's website, by phone or at an SBI branch.
ICICI is more clear: ₹20,000 a month for salaried applicants, ₹2,40,000 a year for the self-employed, ages 21 to 65, apply online or in the iMobile app. That low floor make HPCL Super Saver one of the easier fuel cards to aim for, if the published figure matters to you.
Clearing a floor is not approval, the bank decides. Under the RBI's 2025 card Directions it must look at your own financial means and existing limits, and tell you the specific reasons in writing if it says no. To chase an application, use the numbers on our SBI Card customer care and ICICI Bank customer care pages.
Verdict: match the card to the pump, then to the spend
- Pick OCTANE if BPCL is your regular pump, your fuel is ₹5,000 to ₹10,000 a month and you can route ₹2 lakh a year through the card. Its 10 points per ₹100 on groceries and dining is the quiet bonus that put it far ahead in our typical and heavy profiles.
- Pick HPCL Super Saver if HPCL is closer, your fuel is under ₹5,000 a month and your total spend is modest. At ₹15,000 a month it beat OCTANE by ₹808.82 a year (₹3,360 minus ₹2,551.18), mostly because OCTANE's fee isn't reversed below ₹2 lakh.
- Pick neither if you fill at random pumps, pay fuel by UPI, or spend well over ₹10,000 a month on fuel. Because both caps leave most of it unrewarded.
One habit help with either card: keep each fill at ₹4,000 or below so the surcharge waiver applies, and on the ICICI card never let one fill go above ₹10,000, or the 1% fee wipes the cashback. Our best fuel credit cards list and the guide to how fuel cards work cover other pumps, and the issuers are on the SBI Card and ICICI Bank hubs, with all our cards on the credit cards hub.
